2020.09.24 20:08 NamNguyen56 FULL WRITING SPEECH OF PRESIDENT TRUMP AT UN

FULL WRITING SPEECH OF PRESIDENT TRUMP AT UN

![img](choano3sy4p51 " Yesterday, when he heard President Trump speak at the United Nations Congress (online organization), the part he bluntly denounced China, looking at the state of the Chinese representative was very worrying (although he wore face mask). President Trump's speech was very assertive, eloquent, straightforward, powerful, causing many opponents to shiver, but it is difficult to challenge, because what he said is a true reflection of the current state of the country. America and the contemporary world.📷📷 Perhaps, only those who are jealous, jealous of this president, can find some vague traces only. —- FULL WRITTEN SPEECH OF THE PRESIDENT TRUMP AT UN (Translated from FB Tanhia Nguyen) I am honored to speak to the United Nations General Assembly. 75 years after World War II ended and the United Nations was formed, we are once again engaged in a great global struggle. We waged a fierce war against the invisible enemy - the Chinese virus - that took the lives of countless people in 188 countries. In the United States, we launched the most drastic movement since World War II. We quickly created a record-breaking supply of ventilators, creating a surplus allowing us to share them with friends and partners around the globe. We pioneered life-saving treatments, reducing mortality by 85% since April. Thanks to our efforts, the three vaccines are in the final stages of clinical trials. We are mass-producing them in advance so they can be delivered on arrival. We will deliver vaccines, we will beat the virus, we will end the pandemic, and we will enter a new era of unprecedented prosperity, cooperation and peace. As we pursue this bright future, we have a responsibility to speak up to the country that caused this plague to the world: China! In the early days of the virus, China banned domestic travel while allowing flights to leave China and infect the world. China condemned my travel ban against their home country, even if it canceled domestic flights and locked citizens in their homes. The Chinese government and the World Health Organization - which is largely controlled by China - have falsely claimed that there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission. Then, they erroneously say that asymptomatic people are not contagious. The United Nations must hold China accountable for its actions. In addition, China releases millions of millions of tons of plastic and garbage every year into the oceans, overfishing the waters of other countries, destroying vast coral reefs and releasing a high amount of toxic mercury into the atmosphere. more harmful than any other country in the world. China's carbon emissions are almost double that of the United States and are growing rapidly. By contrast, after I pulled out of the one-sided Paris Climate Agreement, last year, the United States reduced its carbon footprint more than any other country in the agreement. Those who attack America's special environmental record while ignoring China's widespread pollution are ignorant of the environment. They just want to punish America, and I won't support that. If the United Nations is an effective organization, it must focus on the real world problems. This includes terrorism, persecution of women, forced labor, drug trafficking, human and sexual trafficking, religious persecution and ethnic cleansing of religious minorities. America will always lead the way in terms of human rights. My administration is promoting religious freedom, opportunities for women, eradication of homosexuality, combating human trafficking and protecting unborn children. We also know that American prosperity is the cornerstone of freedom and security around the world. In three short years, we've built the greatest economy in history, and we're quickly redoing it. Our army has grown dramatically in size. We have spent 2.5 trillion dollars over the past four years on our military. We have the most powerful military anywhere in the world. We have resisted China's commercial abuse for decades. We have revived the NATO Alliance, where other countries are now sharing more equitably than before. We have forged historic partnerships with Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador to stop human trafficking. We are side by side with the Cuban, Nicaragua and Venezuelan people in their just fight for freedom. We withdrew from Iran's Terrible Nuclear Deal and imposed crippling sanctions on the world's top terrorist sponsor. We have removed 100% of the ISIS caliphate; murder of its founder and leader, al-Baghdadi; and destroy the world's leading terrorist, Qasem Soleimani. This month we reached a peace agreement between Serbia and Kosovo. We reached a landmark breakthrough with two peace agreements in the Middle East, after decades of no progress. Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain all signed a historic peace agreement at the White House, along with many other Middle Eastern countries coming up. They come very quickly and they know it's great for them and that's great for the world too! These groundbreaking peace arrangements were the dawn of the new Middle East. By taking a different approach, we achieved different results - far superior results. We have taken an approach and this has worked. We intend to make more peace deals soon, and I have never been more optimistic about the future of the region as of now. As we said, the United States is also working to end the war in Afghanistan, and we are sending our troops home. America is fulfilling our mission as a peacemaker, but it is peace through strength. Now we are stronger than ever. Our weapon is at the most advanced level we've never had before - frankly we hadn't even thought of having it before. And I just pray to God that we never have to use them. For decades, the same weary voices have been proposing the same failed solutions, pursuing global ambitions at the cost of the people of their own country. But only when you are interested in your citizens do you find a real basis for cooperation. As President, I have rejected the failed approaches of the past and I am proud to put America first, just as you should put your countries first. That's okay - that's what you should do! I strongly believe that next year, face-to-face, will be one of the greatest years in world history! Thank you. God bless you all. God bless America. And God bless the United Nations! ")

Welcome back to the forty-eighth edition of /neoliberal elects the American presidents!
This will be a fairly consistent weekly thing - every week, a new election, until we run out.
I highly encourage you - at least in terms of the vote you cast - to try to think from the perspective of the year the election was held, without knowing the future or how the next administration would go. I'm not going to be trying to enforce that, but feel free to remind fellow commenters of this distinction.
If you're really feeling hardcore, feel free to even speak in the present tense as if the election is truly upcoming!
Whether third and fourth candidates are considered "major" enough to include in the strawpoll will be largely at my discretion and depend on things like whether they were actually intending to run for President, and whether they wound up actually pulling in a meaningful amount of the popular vote and even electoral votes. I may also invoke special rules in how the results will be interpreted in certain elections to better approximate historical reality.
While I will always give some brief background info to spur the discussion, please don't hesitate to bring your own research and knowledge into the mix! There's no way I'll cover everything!
Ronald Reagan v Walter Mondale, 1984
Profiles
  • Ronald Reagan is the 73-year-old Republican candidate and the current President. His running mate is current Vice President George Bush.
  • Walter Mondale is the 56-year-old Democratic candidate and the previous Vice President. His running mate is US Representative from New York Geraldine Ferraro.
Issues and Background
  • Within a year of taking office, President Reagan signed comprehensive tax reform legislation that exemplified his economic philosophy. The top marginal income rate was cut from 70% to 50%, and the rate on the lowest taxable bracket was reduced from 14% to 11%. The capital gains tax was reduced from 28% of 20%. Legislation in 1982, prompted by increases in the deficit, prevented the full tax cut aspirations of the 1981 legislation from going into effect. Reagan and his supporters credit his economic policies with the strong economic recovery since the beginning of 1983.
  • The last couple years have seen very large federal budget deficits, with the 1983 peak at a level unseen since immediately following World War II, even relative to GDP. Mondale has chosen to make this arguably his biggest domestic campaign issue. Mondale has argued that the "question of the deficit and getting interest rates down is the most important domestic problem of our time - nothing else compares with it." He has spoken in stark terms about the alleged stakes, saying:
The President's point that growth will cure the deficit is obviously not the case. The deficit will get worse even with growth. Thus it is a very severe problem that threatens our future, saddles our kids with a with a trillion dollars worth of debt, is making us into a debtor nation, is destroying our position in international commerce, driving up interest rates, and is making the budget increasingly unmanageable.
Further, Mondale has gone further in his gambit on making the deficit an election issue by pledging to raise taxes. In his nomination acceptance speech, Mondale said:
Whoever is inaugurated in January, the American people will have to pay Mr. Reagan's bills. The budget will be squeezed. Taxes will go up. And anyone who says they won't is not telling the truth to the American people.
I mean business. By the end of my first term, I will reduce the Reagan budget deficit by two-thirds.
Let's tell the truth. That must be done - it must be done. Mr. Reagan will raise taxes, and so will I. He won't tell you. I just did.
    • Specifically, the Mondale deficit reduction plan calls for $85 billion in new tax revenues and $105 billion in cuts in projected spending. The entirety of the new tax revenue is to be earmarked for a special fund to reduce the deficit. Any further new spending will be "pay as you go," requiring new revenue to cover the spending. The planned spending cuts are mostly decreases in the planned growth of spending, including for the military and Medicare, rather than outright cuts.
    • According to Mondale campaign advisers, a typical family of four with a gross annual income of $25,000 (OOC: ~$62,000 in 2020 dollars, same format for further parentheticals) will not see their taxes go up. However, by 1989, families making $25,000 to $35,000 (~$62,000 to $86,000) will see a tax increase of about $95 (~$200) families making up to $45,000 (~$111,000) will pay roughly $200 (~$500) more and families making $100,000 (~$250,000) will pay about $2,600 (~$6,400) more.
    • Republicans have of course criticized the Mondale plan sharply. Vice President Bush called it a "program for failure" that would stall the recovery. Reagan insists that deficit reduction must come through economic growth and reductions in wasteful government spending. Reagan describes a tax increase as a "last resort."
  • Religion and issues of morality have come up several times during this campaign. President Reagan favors a Constitutional amendment that would permit organized prayers in public schools that students can opt-out of. Mondale opposes the amendment. President Reagan also supports a Constitutional amendment banning abortions except when the life of the mother is at risk. Mondale is personally opposed to abortion but believes it should be a woman's individual choice. Mondale's running mate Geraldine Ferraro has received pushback for her statement that, "the President goes around calling himself a good Christian; I don't for a minute believe it," criticizing Reagan's policies as "unfair" and "discriminatory."
  • In fall 1983, following an internal power struggle in the country and pleas from other Caribbean nations, the United States invaded Grenada alongside several Caribbean nations. The invasion was successful, resulting in the establishment of a new interim government. Elections are intended to take place in the coming months. The Reagan Administration justified the intervention on the basis of protecting US medical students on the island. The UN General Assembly voted 108 to 9 to call the intervention a "flagrant violation of international law." Mondale raised questions about the invasion early on, but in the past couple months has spoken favorably of it.
  • The United States along with three European nations introduced a peacekeeping force into Lebanon in 1982, in the broader context of the Lebanese Civil War. US diplomatic and military forces have been the victim of a number of suicide bombings, in particular the 1983 bombings of Beirut barracks, killing 241 US military personnel. Mondale has been sharply critical of Reagan with respect to these bombings, arguing that there was plenty of warning to prevent them. Mondale has further argued that overall US policy in Lebanon has been marked by "unbelievable disorganization." In January, Mondale called for the withdrawal of US marines from Lebanon. Reagan argues that the US presence in Lebanon helped facilitate the withdrawal of Palestinian guerrilla fighters.
  • At no point in his first term thus far has President Reagan met with his Soviet counterpart, Konstantin Chernenko. Mondale has frequently criticized Reagan for this, and has promised he would hold annual summit meetings with Soviet leaders. Reagan has said that he would like a summit, but needs to feel sure it will produce results before it happens. More broadly, Reagan has described the necessary policy towards the Soviet Union as one of "credible deterrence and peaceful competition," though he has also not held back in his criticism of the Soviet Union, calling it just last year an "evil empire."
  • In 1979, the Sandinista National Liberation Front in Nicaragua overthrew the Somoza dictatorship and established a new government. Since then, counterrevolutionary forces including former pro-Somoza forces as well as disillusioned former Sandinistas, have engaged in armed conflict against the Sandinista government. Reagan cancelled economic aid to Nicaragua upon taking office, but has since said that there have been attempts to get along with the new government. However, Reagan has been sharply critical of Nicaragua's accused military buildup and "meddling" in El Salvador.
    • Mondale has criticized Reagan's "failed policies" in Central America and has promised that if elected, he would end all US military exercises in Central America, withdraw combat forces from Honduras, and "end the covert activities directed toward Nicaragua."
    • A CIA booklet became public this October which has raised questions about the nature of US covert activities in Nicaragua. As reported by the New York Times:
A Central Intelligence Agency document that became public this week tells Nicaraguan rebels how to win popular support and gives advice on political assassination, blackmail and mob violence.
The 44-page booklet, titled ''Psychological Operations in Guerrilla Warfare,'' is a primer on insurgency. Most activity of this sort in Nicaragua has been paid for by the United States through the C.I.A.
The primer explains how to kidnap and kill officials, blow up public buildings and blackmail ordinary citizens.
  • Ferraro and her husband have come under intense media scrutiny over their financial history, with accusations ranging from tax avoidance to connections to organized crime, pornography, and gambling. In response, the couple has relented in releasing several years of tax returns, and Ferraro has allowed the media hours of her time to ask questions related to her and her husband's finances. Most accusations against them have proven to be exaggerated, though there are still lingering questions regarding certain accounting errors that were made. For more technical details, see coverage by the New York Times or Washington Post.
  • Particularly following what some considered to be a sub-par first debate performance, some Democrats are openly raising the question of whether Reagan, 73, is too old to continue serving as President. Asked at a White House event whether age should be considered a legitimate issue, Reagan said jokingly of Mondale, "I'll challenge him to an arm-wrestle any time." Reagan's more vigorous second debate performance has led to a diminishing of the age discussion.
  • In June 1981, the Associated Press and Los Angeles Times reported on a rare lung infection in 5 young previously healthy gay men in Los Angeles. Since then, over 6,000 cases of "acquired immune deficiency syndrome" (AIDS) have been reported to public health officials. In April of this year, the cause of the disease was discovered, a retrovirus known as HTLV-III. According to the CDC, "most cases have been reported among homosexual men with multiple sexual partners, abusers of intravenous drugs, and Haitians, especially those who have entered the country within the past few years." The case fatality rate is extremely high. Scientists say the virus is mainly spread through sexual contact. There were two major developments just recently in October. First, the New York Times reported that saliva may be a possible source of transmission, though it remains unlikely that it is a "key mode of spread." Second, under pressure from Mayor Dianne Feinstein, San Francisco public health officials ordered a number of bathhouses and sex clubs geared towards homosexual men closed. Officials at the Department of Health and Human Services argue that this disease has become a top research priority for them, and that they expect to spend many millions of dollars on research grants and other efforts. However, some groups like the National Gay Task Force have criticized the government sharply and say that not nearly enough is being done. Many criticisms of the government and other institutions and groups of people are covered in the essay from last year famous in the gay community, "1,112 and Counting" by Larry Kramer, published in the New York Native. Neither Reagan nor Mondale have spoken of this disease on the campaign trail.
OOC Note: There is no indication that AIDS was an issue in the presidential election. Even gay newspapers from this time did not relate the crisis much if at all to the presidential election. To the extent that government policy was discussed, it was often local policy. Why mention it then? Well, it's a similar situation to Japanese internment and the 1944 election. I know some of you will bring this up no matter what, understandably, and so I'd like to at the very least calibrate the discussion to the year of the election with proper context and background.
Platforms (Important note if this is influencing your vote: These are just excerpts, not everything is included and inclusion of a point in one set of excerpts does NOT mean the other party took the opposing stance or didn't mention it; also, especially in the modern era, a Presidential candidate may disagree with the party platform)
Read the full 1984 Republican platform here. 10 Excerpts:
  1. "We reaffirm our conviction that State and local governments closest to the people are the best and most efficient"
  2. "The Republican Party pledges to continue our efforts to lower tax rates, change and modernize the tax system, and eliminate the incentive-destroying effects of graduated tax rates ... We therefore support tax reform that will lead to a fair and simple tax system and believe a modified flat tax—with specific exemptions for such items as mortgage interest—is a most promising approach"
  3. "The President is denied proper control over the federal budget ... To remedy this, we support enhanced authority to prevent wasteful spending, including a line-item veto"
  4. "We need coordination between fiscal and monetary policy, timely information about Fed decisions, and an end to the uncertainties people face in obtaining money and credit ... The Gold Standard may be a useful mechanism for realizing the Federal Reserve's determination to adopt monetary policies needed to sustain price stability"
  5. "The greatest danger today to our international trade is a growing protectionist sentiment"
  6. "The Republican Party has deep concern about gratuitous sex and violence in the entertainment media, both of which contribute to the problem of crime against children and women"
  7. "We Republicans emphasize that there is a profound moral difference between the actions and ideals of Marxist-Leninist regimes and those of democratic governments, and we reject the notions of guilt and apology which animate so much of the foreign policy of the Democratic Party"
  8. "Stable and peaceful relations with the Soviet Union are possible and desirable, but they depend upon the credibility of American strength and determination"
  9. "We ... reaffirm our support for a human life amendment to the Constitution, and we endorse legislation to make clear that the Fourteenth Amendment's protections apply to unborn children"
  10. "We affirm our country's absolute fight to control its borders ... Those desiring to enter must comply with our immigration laws ... Failure to do so not only is an offense to the American people but is fundamentally unjust to those in foreign lands patiently waiting for legal entry ... We will preserve the principle of family reunification"
Read the full 1984 Democratic platform here. 10 Excerpts:
  1. "Instead of runaway deficits, a Democratic Administration will pursue overall economic policies that sharply reduce deficits, down interest rates, free savings for private investment, prevent another explosion of inflation and put the dollar on a competitive footing"
  2. "We will pursue international negotiations to open markets and eliminate trade restrictions, recognizing that the growth and stability of the Third World depends on its ability to sell its products in international markets"
  3. "The Environmental Protection Agency should receive a budget that exceeds in real dollars the agency's purchasing power when President Reagan took office, since the agency's workload has almost doubled in recent years"
  4. "After four years in which the roll of dishonor in the Administration has grown weekly and monthly—from Richard Allen to Rita Lavelle, from Thomas Reed to James Watt—it is time for an end to the embarrassment of Republican cronyism and malfeasance"
  5. "Violent acts of bigotry, hatred and extremism aimed at women, racial, ethnic and religious minorities, and gay men and lesbians have become an alarmingly common phenomenon ... A Democratic Administration will work vigorously to address, document, and end all such violence"
  6. "In the year made famous by George Orwell, we can see the realization of many of his grimmest prophecies in the totalitarian Soviet state, which has amassed an arsenal of weapons far beyond its defensive needs"
  7. "Sadly, Mr. Reagan has opted for the all too frequent American response to the unrest that has characterized Central America-military assistance ... Over the past 100 years, Panama. Nicaragua, and Honduras have all been occupied by U.S. forces in an effort to suppress indigenous revolutionary movements"
  8. "A Democratic President will pursue a foreign policy that advances basic civil and political rights—freedom of speech, association, thought and religion, the right to leave, freedom of the integrity of the person, and the prohibition of torture, arbitrary detention and cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment—and that seeks as well to attain basic, economic, social, and cultural rights"
  9. "We support tough restraints on the manufacture, transportation, and sale of snub-nosed handguns, which have no legitimate sporting use and are used in a high proportion of violent crimes"
  10. "...the Reagan Administration has acted as if deficits do not count ... The deficits are huge and are expected to get larger—and they are a major negative factor in everything from high interest rates to the third world debt crisis"

2020.08.30 05:39 doesntrlymttranyway Tips for nursing with inverted nipples

My sister was unable to nurse past four months or so with her first child, and supplemented quite a bit since birth because pumping and nursing was just so painful for her due to having inverted nipples. She had her baby in Honduras (she is a missionary there) and had a very traumatic c-section and postpartum experience. Needless to say, she did not have the best support system over there, but my nephew is now one and a half years old, and thankfully quite healthy. One of the few blessings that came as a result of the pandemic was her ability to come back to the states, and now she is pregnant again with baby #2.
I had my first baby 5 months ago, and when my sister came to visit us for the first time, she had a lot of questions for me about what our breastfeeding journey has been like and what I did to prepare. I told her that it was tough and I wanted to give up many nights but was really glad that I carried on because we have finally gotten to a place where our breastfeeding relationship is pretty solid. I had a lot of support from my partner, an IBCLC, and the midwives who delivered my baby, and told her that if she had the support I just knew that she could breastfeed her future child. I do not have inverted nipples myself, so I told her that I couldn’t speak from experience in overcoming that particular obstacle. But the book I read (the womanly art of breastfeeding) had a detailed section devoted to troubleshooting that issue. She is looking forward to the opportunity to give breastfeeding and/or pumping another shot, and I just want to try and be as supportive of her and her journey as I can.
Could any ladies here share some stories about their experiences with breastfeeding a baby while having inverted nipples? What did you do to prepare, if there was anything in particular? The book talks about using a syringe like a plunger of sorts to make them come out. Is this actually helpful? Is it painful? What other methods allowed you to nurse/pump successfully?
Any advice or resources that I might be able to share with her would be greatly appreciated. TIA!

2020.08.23 22:42 techwabbit First Time: MS13 member charged with Terrorism-related Offenses - DOJ Announces - Trump Task Force to Dismantle MS-13 Takes Down Gang’s Key Leaders - Judicial Watch

Trump Task Force to Dismantle MS-13 Takes Down Gang’s Key Leaders
Some good news for a change. A special task force launched by President Donald Trump to gut the nation’s deadliest street gang has taken down key leaders in less than a year and for the first time charged a gang banger with terrorism-related offenses. The feared street gang of mostly Central American illegal immigrants, Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), has spread throughout the U.S. and is renowned for drug distribution, murder, rape, robbery, home invasions, kidnappings, vandalism and other violent crimes. The Justice Department’s National Gang Intelligence Center (NGIC) says criminal street gangs like MS-13 are responsible for the majority of violent crimes in the U.S. and are the primary distributors of most illicit drugs.
Thanks to Barack Obama’s open border policies, MS-13 was energized with new recruits provided by a steady flow of illegal immigrant minors. When the Obama administration started welcoming a barrage of Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) in 2014, Homeland Security sources told Judicial Watch that the nation’s most violent street gangs—including MS-13 and the 18th Street gang—were actively recruiting new members at U.S. shelters housing the minors. The Texas Department of Public Safety subsequently confirmed that the MS-13 is a top tier gang thanks to the influx of illegal alien gang members that crossed into the state under Obama’s disastrous program, which saw over 60,000 illegal immigrants—many with criminal histories—storm into the U.S. in a matter of months. Tens of thousands more have entered since then.
POTUS - Executive Order - Presidential Executive Order on Enforcing Federal Law with Respect to Transnational Criminal Organizations and Preventing International Trafficking - Feb. 2017
President Trump vowed to crush the famously savage MS-13 and shortly after taking office issued an Executive Order directing several agencies, including the departments of Justice, State and Homeland Security, to coordinate an effort to restore safety for the American people by extinguishing transitional criminal organizations such as MS-13. The order states that the criminal groups have spread throughout the nation, threatening the safety of the United States and its citizens. “These organizations derive revenue through widespread illegal conduct, including acts of violence and abuse that exhibit a wanton disregard for human life,” the order says. “They, for example, have been known to commit brutal murders, rapes, and other barbaric acts. These groups are drivers of crime, corruption, violence, and misery.” The president gives federal agencies 120 days to report progress in combating the criminal organizations as well as recommended actions for dismantling them.
In August 2019 Attorney General William Barr launched an initiative known as Joint Task Force Vulcan (JTFV) to address MS-13 with a coordinated force of federal law enforcement agencies and the Department of Justice (DOJ). JTFV has increased collaboration with foreign law enforcement partners, including in El Salvador, Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala; designated priority MS-13 programs, cliques and leaders, who have the most impact on the U.S., for targeted prosecutions, and; coordinated significant MS-13 indictments in U.S. Attorney’s Offices across the country, such as New York, Virginia and Nevada. Less than a year after its formation, the task force has recorded big successes. This week the DOJ announced a number of significant JTFV cases, including for the first time an MS-13 member being charged with terrorism-related offenses, the take down of the MS-13 Hollywood leadership and the Attorney General’s decision to seek the death penalty against an MS-13 operative. (emphasis mine) JTFV Director John Durham calls it the result of tremendous teamwork between prosecutors and law enforcement officers across the United States and Central America.
The cases announced this week include an indictment against a high-ranking MS-13 operative, Melgar Diaz, in Virginia. Diaz is charged with conspiring to provide material support to terrorists, conspiring to kill or maim persons overseas, conspiring to commit acts of terrorism transcending national boundaries, conspiring to finance terrorism, and; conspiring to engage in narco-terrorism, in addition to racketeering conspiracy and drug trafficking. In another case eight MS-13 members were indicted in New York for committing six murders, two attempted murders, kidnapping, narcotics felonies and related firearms offenses. In Nevada 13 MS-13 gang bangers, including leaders of the “Hollywood Locos” clique and “Los Angeles Program” were charged with multiple counts of narcotics distribution and weapons crimes. The task force is also responsible for the indictment in New York of Alexi Saenz, an MS-13 leader accused of committing seven murders, including two high school students with a machete and baseball bat. “MS-13 is a violent transnational criminal organization, whose criminal activities respect no boundaries,” said Durham, the JTFV director. “The only way to defeat MS-13 is by targeting the organization as a whole, focusing on the leadership structure, and deploying a whole-of-government approach against a common enemy.” (emphasis mine)
I don't believe in being soft on violent criminals. This isn't a cruel stand, its a fact of life, that those people who will perform a violent crime once, statistically will do so again.
Highlights:
  • The violent crime rate in the United States rose 7% from 2014 to 2016 (from 362 to 387 violent crimes per 100,000 persons) and fell 5% from 2016 to 2018 (from 387 to 369 per 100,000 persons).
  • The murder rate (including non-negligent manslaughter) in the U.S. rose 23% from 2014 to 2016 and fell 7% from 2016 to 2018.
  • The rate of rape (revised definition) in the U.S. rose every year from 2014 to 2018, rising 15% over that span.
  • The U.S. robbery rate rose 2% from 2014 to 2016 and fell 16% from 2016 to 2018. The U.S. aggravated assault rate rose 8% from 2014 to 2016 and fell 0.6% from 2016 to 2018.
https://www.bjs.gov/index.cfm?ty=pbdetail&iid=6929
However, we all know those crimes have risen significantly in 2019-2020 as the Dem's along with BLM and Antifa wage wars in our cities.
While Dem's let criminals out of jail, burn our cities and put Small Biz America outa work, our DOJ and Barr are hard at work attempting to make our street safers and put criminals in Jail.
What a stark and extremely relevant contrast in our present day Cultural War.
  • What do you think about this?
  • What do you think about MS 13 leader being charged under Terrorism Statutes?

2020.07.22 14:35 efa___ I Read It So You Don't Have To: Growing Up Duggar (by Jana, Jill, Jessa, and Jinger Duggar)

Hi all -- for the past few weeks, I've been occupying my hours of quarantine boredom by reading several of the literary masterpieces written by Real Housewives cast members and sharing write-ups of my perilous adventures with the BravoRealHousewives subreddit. But -- at my core -- I am nothing if not a glutton for punishment. So when u/acoffeycup suggested that I crack open my copy of Growing Up Duggar and do my best to decipher the wisdom within, I couldn't turn down the challenge. And in this newfound spirit of evangelism, it seems only proper for me to share the fruits of my journey with your pliant and receptive ears. So pull up a chair, scoop yourself a big ol' slice of tater tot casserole, and listen in respectful reverence to my personal testimony of Jana, Jill, Jessa, and Jinger Duggar's 2014 book, Growing Up Duggar: It's All About Relationships.
----
On the book's cover, the four eldest Duggar daughters smile placidly at the reader, bedecked in a dignified assortment of denim and denim-adjacent garments. Yet even within these constraints, our feisty fashionistas still find ways to express their own unique aesthetic sensibilities. Jinger, for example, sports an early iteration of her now-iconic blazer, opting to emphasize her youthful spirit through whimsical cap sleeves and a precious baby-doll waistline. Next to her, Jessa stares soullessly into the camera, and -- almost against my will -- I find my eyes drawn to her hypnotic gaze. But thankfully, before I am sucked too deeply into that most barren abyss, I am distracted by the smattering of small pearlescent buttons adorning what might otherwise be mistaken for a extra-small mechanic's shirt, and I seize the chance to move along to the next Duggar offspring at hand.
Jill's silhouette is by far the most avant-garde of the foursome, perhaps foreshadowing her oft-hypothesized rebellious inclinations. A tunic-length dress is cinched cheekily above her waist with a thick, woven belt, while a long denim underskirt fully obscures her sheepish shins. In the back right corner, Jana jazzes up a simple tee with a bold statement necklace ostensibly purchased from the clearance section of Earthbound Trading Co., the perfect compliment to an exotically hemmed skirt that I can only assume has been sewn together from the tatters of Duggar rags past.
Eager to learn what invaluable wisdom these pages hold, I impatiently open to the book's introduction -- welcomingly titled, "Greetings: From Our Hearts to Yours." As I begin to read, I am heartened to learn that there is hope for each and every one of us, "whoever you are -- whether you're the girl we met who goes to a Christian school and attends church three times a week but is still struggling inside, or the girl with five tattoos and multiple piercings." Yes, whatever sins you may have committed in your ungodly ignorance -- provided, of course, that you have not yet blighted your body with that accursed sixth tattoo -- the Duggar girls hold a special place for you in their hearts:
Even though we have never met most of you reading this book, we want you to know we love you and care about your future. We want to share our stories with you, knowing you have a story, too, and hoping something we say here might empower you to use your story, your life, to help others.
The Introduction continues with a brief summary of the Duggar Family timeline, in which we are informed that "Mom and Dad look at life as a race against time." This seems to me a bit incongruous with the whole 'eternal life' thing, but perhaps Jim Bob and Michelle were affected by the hit 2002 film Clockstoppers just as strongly as I was. I am also excited to learn that I will soon get the chance to hear more about the authors' "passion for being involved in the political realm," as well as their "commitment and desire to reach out to people in faraway countries." With a few concluding remarks emphasizing the importance of relationships, the introduction comes to an end, and we begin the book proper with Chapter One: "Your Relationship with Yourself: Getting to know and love the girl in the mirror."
We are informed that "Jana and I (Jill) sleep in double beds with our youngest sisters, Jordyn and Josie, and the other girls sleep in twin- or youth-sized beds," which seems as good a time as any to clarify that our authors ranged in age from twenty to twenty-four years old at the time of this book's publication. But if you find yourself pitying the cramped conditions of the Duggar daughters, think again! Not only is it a delight to spend so much time surrounded by siblings, but the elder girls are often led towards profound truths by the innocent remarks of babes. To illustrate this point, Jill recounts a scene in which a young Johannah asked to wear her sister's retainer. Wise beyond her years, Jill gently denied the request, explaining that the retainer had been made to fit her mouth and couldn't be worn by the small girl (a small blessing, as I can absolutely imagine the Duggar family passing down a single retainer from child to child for a decade or more). But what sagacious insights should we glean from this touching tale?
Thinking about that conversation later reminded me that we can't conform ourselves to other people's molds. But we try sometimes, don't we?
It's so comforting to remind myself that I was molded for Jesus's mouth only -- why would I try to adapt to the crooked canines of this fallen world? We are next provided with a list of "ten aspects of life" that God wants us to accept. These range from the blatantly problematic -- "whether we're a girl or boy" -- to the bafflingly sinister -- "the date we will die." When it comes to the more physical aspects of your aesthetic presentation, however, a lack of effort is unbecoming. Or, as the Duggar Girls reminisce:
We heard a pastor say one time, "Any ol' barn looks better with some paint on it!"
The girls also explain their convictions regarding modest attire -- "we want to be respectful of those around us." Personally, I've always attempted to show respect to others by presuming that they have the emotional and cognitive wherewithal to avoid turning into some kind of raving hormonal beast at a bit of tasteful sideboob. But that's why I'm not the one writing an advice book!! Thankfully, in this day and age, a number of options exist for those who want to be both chic and chaste. For example:
Several of our friends have purchased stunning dresses from designers such as www.beautifullymodest.com or www.totallymodest.com.
I'm rather partial to inordinatelymodest.com myself, although the sales at bewilderinglymodest.com just can't be beat! But our gracious authors bring us back down to earth, reminding us that there are far more important things in life than the frivolous fads of fashion -- namely (as we begin Chapter 2), "Your Relationship with Your Parents: Love, respect, and communication."
In order to facilitate these crucial lines of open and honest communication across such an innumerable brood, we learn that Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar have made the radical decision to carve out dedicated time for one-on-one conversations with each child -- "usually on one Saturday a month." These precious monthly check-ins with one (or, on a particularly special occasion, both!) parents provide an opportunity for otherwise scant face-to-face contact, and also allow the Duggar parents to exercise some of their more cutting-edge parenting techniques. For example, our authors let us in on one particularly hard-earned pearl of wisdom practiced by their beloved parents -- "often to help get the conversation going, they'll ask us questions."
With such a lofty standard being proffered, I understand how intimidating it may be to even attempt to incorporate such advanced strategies into your own parenting repertoire. But rest assured -- in case you have yet to acquire the child-reading confidence necessary to formulate such thoughtful queries on your own, I've taken the liberty of transcribing a few of the book's most incisive inquiries to help you parent like a pro.
How's your thought life going?

What things about your past would you like to change?

What things in our family discourage you?
"Discouraging" is exactly the word I would use to describe Michelle Duggar's bedragged coiffure, although something tells me that's not exactly the kind of confession that line of questioning is designed to draw out. A subsequent passage emphasizes the importance of obedience, which we learn should be "instant," "cheerful," "thorough," and "unconditional." Such instruction is necessary, as the Duggar Girls explain, because "we are all born with a sin nature." Similar to the appendix, the "sin nature" is a vestigial organ that humans retain as a remnant of our distant evolutionary past -- at least, according to the heathens who indulge in that sort of paleobiological storytelling. And if such instructions still seem overly domineering to your unenlightened mind, this adage from George Orwell's 1984 the Institute in Basic Life Principles may help reframe your mindset:
Obedience is the freedom to be creative under God-given authority.
We transition from this doubleplusgood quote into the next chapter: "Your Relationship with Your Siblings: Becoming best friends," in which the authors waste no time in assuring us that the Duggar siblings "range from outdoorsy types to computer geeks, animal lovers to bookworms." Plus, I can only assume, a brain, an athlete, a basket-case, a princess, and a criminal. We go on to learn that the clan represents "a diverse assortment of personalities, interests, strengths, and weaknesses." Which sounds suspiciously like the noncommittal vagueness of someone who has never before possessed a character trait more forceful than, perhaps, a vague appreciation for wainscoting. Inevitably, however, these differences in temperament lead to vicious conflict. For example, as Jessa tremulously recounts:
An incident many years ago served as a lesson to us all. A younger sibling asked, "What kind of ice cream are you getting?" and the frustrated older sibling replied, "You don't have to always copy everything I do! Why don't you just pick out your own flavor?"
Mom immediately took that older sibling aside and shared how much hurt and devastation a remark like that causes. […] Apologies were made, and the younger sibling readily forgave. The older sibling resolved to never speak demeaning words like that again but rather to embrace and uplift this sibling, and today, these two continue to be the best of friends.
I find it truly inspirational to know that even this -- the most unimaginably devastating of sibling brawls -- could be delivered from the brink of schism and restored to genuine affection. Yet it is not just sibling relationships that must be navigated with this sort of grace and levelheadedness. No, as we learn in the next chapter -- "Your Relationship with Friends: 'Show me your friends, and I'll show you your future'" -- it is important to shrewdly evaluate our friendships to assess their effects in our lives. To illustrate this point, the Duggar Girls encourage us to be mindful of the influence we exert over our loved ones.
Think about your last conversation with your friend. Did it lovingly challenge him or her spiritually?
I think back to a time when a dear friend lovingly challenged me to take edibles and re-watch the first season of Double Divas -- surely this is the kind of spiritual development that a true confidante should inspire! The authors also relay a parable that their parents shared with them as children to demonstrate the importance of standing up for your convictions. In the apocryphal tale, a young girl begs her father to allow her to attend a friend's slumber party. He agrees -- provided she promises to uphold her Christian morals -- and sends her off after a parting moment of prayer. But what began as a carefree romp soon turns sinister, as the chilling saga continues:
The party was lots of fun, and the girl had a great time playing with her friends. And of course, what is a birthday party without a big piece of cake and a scoop of vanilla ice cream? But late that night, before bed, the mom suggested they have a "pretend séance" using a Ouija board.
When the girl heard what this involved, she said respectfully and quietly to the group, "I'm not going to be able to do this."
When the mom asked why not, the girl replied, "I've given my life to Jesus, and I'm not able to do things like this."
The mother was stunned by the little girl's words -- and by her quiet courage in speaking up for her beliefs. She packed up the Ouija board and suggested the girls play something else before bed.
And that mother's name? Albert Einstein. But truly -- I can only hope to one day have even one fraction of the courage shown by this young girl, in this absolutely true story that definitely without-a-doubt one-hundred-percent happened. A more believable anecdote quickly follows, however, this time starring a young Jim Bob Duggar in the role of "huge nerd".
Dad became a Christian when he was only seven, and one day when he and some other little grade school classmates were out on the playground, one of the boys started using God's name as a curse word. Dad quietly told the boy he wished he wouldn't misuse God's name. "After all," Dad told his little friend, "He's the One who made us and loves us."
Following in her father's smarmy footsteps, Jessa encourages the reader to eschew those friends who are only concerned with "watching all the newest movies, listening to the latest pop music, and judging others whom they deemed 'not cool.'" We are also treated to the compelling account of an accident at one of the family's rental properties, in which several cases of energy drinks exploded within a warehouse. By the time this tragic mishap was discovered weeks later, "the energy drinks had actually eroded away a layer of the concrete -- in some places, a half-inch deep!" The moral of this story, as we are solemnly advised, is that "the same thing happens to us when we spend lots of time with 'friends' who may seem sweet and appealing but who are exerting a harmful influence on our hearts." I would have thought a more telling moral would have been "Probably don't drink energy drinks" (or perhaps, "Check on your rental properties more frequently"), but I digress.
Our rollicking ride continues with another of Jim Bob's classic legends: "the story of a nice, likeable young man who grew up in a Christian home but eventually became a drug addict." Eyes wide with horror at the very thought, I read on. After making the grave error of surrounding himself with people whose "sole purpose in life was to 'have a good time,'" this unnamed man soon finds himself ensnared in a perilous trap. Then, on one fateful night, he attends a party and is handed a beer by a passing stranger.
At first he just stood there holding the beer in his hand, smiling and contemplating what he would do. He had never had a desire to drink, but he did not want to feel like an outsider, so when no one was looking he poured half the beer into a nearby potted plant. A little later his friend came by and said, "You didn’t drink any, did you?" Then, grabbing the bottle out of his hand, he noticed that it was half empty. "Hey, guys, he's one of us!" the friend announced to everyone.
Shorty after that the young man started drinking; later he got introduced to drugs. How sad that one, seemingly small decision started him on a path of self-destruction.
I can only assume the rest of that pivotal party went more or less like this. A bone-chilling illustration of just how slippery a slope can be!
We move along to a more cheerful topic in Chapter Five, which switches gears to focus on "Your Relationship with Guys: Saving yourself for the one God has for you." Here, too, we are greeted by the eternal words of our communal patriarch-in-spirit, JBD:
About the time we entered our teenage years, Dad told us a story about a girl he went to school with in elementary and junior high school who was boy-crazy. […] He said he wondered at that early age if eventually this girl would find Mr. Right or if her habit of throwing herself into relationship after relationship would prove to be preparation for a future unstable marriage.
Sadly enough, when this girl finally got married, it didn't last long, and that same pattern of discontent, insecurity, and self-centeredness that had affected her dating also affected her marriage.
Prior to today, I would have found it hard to believe that anyone else could be quite as smugly infuriating as Jim Bob Duggar. But -- if even half of the stories I've read in this book so far are to be believed -- he's gotten only more mellow with age. It's a level of condescending smarm I wouldn't tolerate from a distant great-aunt desperate for an heir to her vast fortune, let alone from the insufferable schoolboy herein described. Nevertheless, my thoughts and prayers go out to this pitiable Jane Doe -- our nation's epidemic of Boy-Craziness has wreaked havoc on so many communities, no doubt the devastating consequence of 5G, vaccines, and/or the 19th amendment.
In order to avoid such dangerous impulses, a responsible woman should take care to abstain from romance novels -- "they paint a picture of an unrealistic, unobtainable relationship." I'm not exactly sure what part of Her Country Star Billionaire Groom seems so "unrealistic" to these narrow-minded nincompoops, but I'll table that conversation for another time. We have more important things to attend to at the moment. Namely, the continuing explanation that, for women, romance novels do "the same thing pornography does to men." I'm grateful for this analogy -- as the most delicate of damsels, I'm not even really sure what pornography is, let alone what about it those mysterious menfolk could possibly find so stimulating! But I do know that warm tingly feeling I get when I cuddle up late at night with a thick, beefy Harlequin Romance!
Alas, it is this very indulgence may prove to be my undoing! As we soon learn:
When a girl reads romance novels, she's doing something very similar [to watching pornography], drawing perfectionistic, romantic pictures into her mind of what she thinks marriage is.
This is a sentiment that, prior to the publication of the book I hold before me, had been most recently proffered by the famed Scottish wordsmith Charlotte Lennox in her 1752 novel, The Female Quixote, and I appreciate our authors for bringing light to such an underrecognized talent. The Duggar Girls continue our intellectual escapades with a reminder that "God put that deep need to be loved and accepted in our hearts so that He could be the one to fulfill it." As an astute pupil of the cultural arts, I immediately recognize this approach as step three of the D.E.N.N.I.S. System (Nurture Dependence).
For this vast array of reasons -- as eager as we may be to go to pound-town tie the knot -- we are cautioned to remain patient until our fated suitor arrives, engaging ourselves in trivial, non-threatening pursuits like "teaching younger girls" or "seeking out ways to bless others through ministry." We should also make it a priority to hone our skills of resistance when it comes to those worrisome "intrusions of lust" that Satan embeds within even the most innocent of minds.
We like to think of [these thoughts] as a live hand grenade coming our direction, and before it explodes we quickly pick it up and throw it right back at the devil.
I can only assume that this what Bruno Mars was trying to convey with his hit song, "Grenade" -- the intertextuality never ceases to amaze me! The Duggar Girls go on to demonstrate their dexterous command of the metaphor -- "We give God the position as 'boss' and 'ruler' of our lives, and we release the 'steering wheel' to His control." -- before highlighting ways to serve God regardless of your marital status. For example, "visiting places like Honduras and sharing the gospel with villagers is a ministry opportunity our family greatly treasures." And by "places like Honduras," I'm sure they mean, "places with countless centuries of rich cultural heritage ravaged by colonial conquest and its lingering effects," and not "places where brown people live." Pretty sure, at least.
But even once you've managed to attract the attentions of your future beloved, you must take care to guard yourself from falling too quickly. To ensure that you don't award your affections to an unworthy suitor (thus irrevocably tainting your eternal purity), the Duggars suggest asking the following questions:
Is his passion in life for earthy money or for eternal riches and rewards?

Does he have a vision for his life of doing great things for God?

Is he a man of character, showing initiative, creativity, diligence, enthusiasm, and wisdom?
I'm 99% sure that "initiative, creativity, diligence, enthusiasm, and wisdom" are the primary attributes from a knockoff version of Dungeons & Dragons -- who knew the Duggar girls were so into RPGs? (I guess they did warn us earlier that some of the family members are "computer geeks").
In the next several passages, the authors explain the "very real and very purposeful differences" between dating (bad!) and courtship (good!). First, they highlight a number of treacherous threats that pervade modern romantic culture.
A danger of modern dating is that it is typically two young people, alone, enjoying an activity. Usually a guy invites a girl out to a nice restaurant or some fun place or event. They enjoy a carefree time without the responsibility of the normal tasks and pressures of life.
I'm almost too overcome with terror at the thought of such a wretched situation! But somehow, (mostly by channeling the immeasurable determination of someone only allowed to show affection through three-second side hugs) I find the strength to read on. But to my despair, even more tragedies await me! As we are instructed to imagine:
What could be worse than having to tell your potential future husband that not only did you not wait but that you also have a severely painful STD that he will likely get if he marries you?
Not a SEVERELY painful STD?! But idk, lots of things could be worse than that, probably? Maybe it's just my overactive imagination, but it seems like you could knock out that whole conversation in one night over a bottle of wine, particularly given ongoing advances in modern medicine. But it seems I still have more to learn -- as I soon read:
Physical intimacy in marriage is pure, wholesome, and beautiful. Outside of marriage, it spreads disease, death, and destruction.
I've never really thought of myself as a "sower of destruction" before, but…I don't hate it. I'm kind of looking forward to seeing what kind of casualties ensue the next time I have sex with my live-in boyfriend. As they say, nothing spices up the sex life like ascending to your thrones as eternal agents of pestilence and devastation!
Our next tip for identifying an ideal mate encourages "meaningful conversations about history, politics, theology, and such" -- I can only assume that the extensive footage of this intellectual discourse is edited out from the family's show at the demands of tyrannical production companies. But while those easily titillated minds might prefer to focus on worldly concerns, our authors are courteous enough to remind us of what truly matters. While he doesn't have to be "the best-looking hunk of human flesh ever created," it is vital that any potential partner practice "the fine old art of gentlemanly chivalry." As the Duggar Girls explain,
A gentleman's courtesy is not about women being weak or strong: it's about men needing to be men.
Jim Bob, as one would expect, exemplifies these virtues. We are regaled with recollections of his many demonstrations of decorum throughout his storied marriage:
Years ago, he was working on honoring Mom in several specific ways, including remembering to open the car door for her.
As soon as I finish reading this book, I'm going to get right to work on a list of specific ways that my boyfriend can work on honoring me -- I'm sure he'll be very appreciative for the guidance!
However, before I can get to that, I must tackle my next lesson: "Understanding What Christian Guys Look For in a Future Wife." Based on an admittedly "small and totally unscientific survey" of their male acquaintances, the Duggar Girls are able to share with us a few explosive secrets. For example, the ideal wife "has a hunger and thirst after righteousness" and promises to "faithfully help [her husband] grow deeper spiritually." What's more, she should also be "involved in some sort of ministry -- preferably music ministry." The chapter concludes with a convenient list of commitments for the reader, including pledges to "choose wholesome activities" and avoid "bad Internet sites."
In Chapter Six, the Duggar Girls lead the reader to examine "Your Relationship with Culture: Making choices that will keep you pure." Almost immediately, we are cautioned that
With just a few clicks of a keyboard, the Internet gives us the ability to research any subject. But it also has the potential to destroy the souls of those who get entangled in its dark side.
And lest you think this is hyperbole, our authors reiterate that "it is not a matter of if but when Satan will try to tempt us." As a thought exercise, the reader is encouraged to reflect: "would your Internet choices be the same when you were all alone as they would be when someone were sitting beside you?" In particular, the girls draw attention to the seedy underbelly of harmful gossip sites, breezily brushing off these piteous busybodies with the following bit of clever wordplay:
We've heard that some discussion boards or chat rooms might be better named bitter rooms because those drawn to them often seem rather bitter.
As our quipsters continue, "unfortunately, some people seem to derive much pleasure from nit-picking other people's lives." Thankfully, I derive my pleasure from nitpicking other people's books, so I'm totally in the clear on this one! Our authors encourage us to reform these renegade impulses by explaining that when we stop wasting time on mindless pursuits, we'll find ourselves becoming more productive, enterprising individuals. As a result of this ideology, we learn that "by age ten, John was working on and operating heavy equipment." I'm unimpressed -- call me when you've got a three-year-old on woodchipper duty. Regardless, it is clearly far safer than its petrifying alternative -- exposure to the horrors of television.
And what, pray tell, might these horrors be? Magic -- "which often shows up in children's movies" -- is revealed to be "part of a demonic realm that God wants us to stay away from." As the authors solemnly intone, "as harmless as it may seem, it's not a joke in God's eyes." Graciously, the Duggars have deigned to provide several reliably pure entertainment options:
many of the old classics that promote honesty, respect of parents, and reverence for God

educational documentaries that teach about science and history from a biblical perspective

many carefully selected episodes of The Andy Griffith Show as long as they are not centered around a lot of romance or deceptiveness, as some of them are
With regard to making appropriate music choices, "much prayerful consideration" is required, lest we "bring a blot to the name and character of the God we represent." However, in order to guide our future reflections, the Duggar Girls go on to provide a helpful technique for assessing acoustic chastity.
Soon after Mom became a Christian at the age of fifteen, a friend encouraged her to write out the lyrics of questionable songs and then compare them to the truths found in the Bible. For instance, if a song's lyrics are saying, "Follow your heart. Do what feels good," we compare it to the Bible and find that […] we're not supposed to follow our hearts, as that will only get us in trouble.
I suppose that means I'll have to rethink my upcoming single, "Follow Your Heart (Do What Feels Good)," but that will have to wait until I've fully absorbed all the insights this book has to offer. For example, as I read on, I learn that I should be particularly suspicious of "rock 'n' roll and its variations such as hard rock and heavy metal." As the authors expound:
Since its beginnings in the 1950s, this music's main goal and purpose have been to promote every one of the issues we want to avoid. A heavy backbeat and words being sung in a breathy and sensual voice -- and even the style of rock 'n' roll music itself -- give off an attitude of rebellion, resistance toward authority, and a rejection of morality. None of these things come without consequences.
Lest you think that our authors are merely being alarmist, they go on to explain that when they "examined the lives of many of these artists," they were dismayed to conclude that "the life expectancy for rock artists and musicians is around forty; many of them die at a young age for reasons related to AIDS, drug or alcohol abuse, or suicides. It's a tragic reality." Far less perilous to enjoy "classical music and traditional hymns," as they are known to "follow a pattern and maintain a very distinct and definite order."
With this final injunction, we move on to the volume's penultimate chapter, "Your Relationship with Your Country: Making a difference in the political arena." My attention is instantly captured by the opening sentence, which informs the reader that "God used a series of supernatural events to clearly lead our family into making a difference in the world of politics." The "supernatural event" in question turns out to be the undeniably divine miracle of Jim Bob Duggar…finding out about a rally against "partial-birth abortion" and then…attending it. I can only imagine how much more wondrous the world must seem if such a banal and explainable episode is sufficient to incite veritable fits of exaltation.
But this portent is just the beginning of Papa Duggar's political career, and I read on to learn even more about "the values Dad stood for." Although this lineup presumably does not include any sort of commitment to avoiding sentence-ending prepositions, it does include a promise to vote "the right way on life-and-death issues."
Before long, Jim Bob "felt God urging him to run for the US Senate," and although he loses the election, publicity from the campaign eventually brings about the family's first taste of national media attention. After much prayer and "wise, godly counsel," the family agrees to be filmed for a reality show -- "we agreed to do it based upon our hope that it would enable our family to share encouraging Bible principles with many other people." And indeed, the family now receives "hundred of letters and e-mails" per week from viewers who have been "spiritually challenged" by watching the series.
But rest assured -- "Dad's loss in that Senate campaign did not end our involvement in politics." If you, too, would like to follow our authors' example and become more civically engaged, you could "find a conservative Christian who is running for office and then call and ask them where he or she stands on the issues." I suppose I should give them a modicum of credit for the inclusive phrasing, "he or she," but the fact that I don't have the slightest doubt as to the intended meaning of "the issues," prevents me from even a half-hearted endorsement of this sentiment.
Blessedly, however, we've reached our story's denouement -- a final chapter entitled, "Your Relationship with the World: Developing a servant's heart." Jill tearfully recounts a ministry trip to El Salvador, taking care to highlight the contrast between the "iron-barred windows" of government orphanages and the "love-filled" Christian facility the group goes on to visit. What accounts for this stark discrepancy? "They've fed these children not only with food for their tummies but also food for their spiritual lives." As Jessa quips, "It is so neat to see how God works." Of course, as you might have suspected, the Duggar Girls quickly realized that, "as with every trip, it was clear that we were the ones who'd gotten the biggest blessings." Truly -- the engagement you get from an Instagram post featuring a bona fide orphan is worth more than any financial reward one could ever hope to gain on this mortal plane!
We next learn about Jill and Jana's experiences with the local volunteer fire department. Mercifully, this endeavor doesn’t necessitate as many Rugged Man Skills as you might assume, and the two are able to respond to such dainty predicaments as "a little old lady's cat stuck in a tree" and "a kid with his lip stuck in a sippie cup" without jeopardizing their feminine delicacy. Jill next shares more about her journey with midwifery. As she reassures us, it's not just "Christian, homeschooling moms" who opt for home deliveries, but "single moms" as well!
Jana, in contrast, tells us that she "[feels] called to focus on childbirth coaching and prenatal preparation instead of 'running the show,' as Jill does so competently when she serves as midwife." And Jinger has been called to minister at "the juvenile detention center in our area," which she fashionably abbreviates as "juvy" to highlight her comfort with urban vernacular.
As I read on, I learn more about the Duggar family's love of music, which is far more diverse and expansive than one might initially assume. For example, did you know that the Duggars "enjoy traditional music as well as classical," or that a young Joy-Anna was encouraged to undertake the daring pursuit of "[learning] to play the violin 'fiddle-style'"?
As these examples illustrate, God's gifts can take a myriad of forms! For this reason, we go on to learn about the importance of "learning how to give an enthusiastic, friendly greeting to others." This technique is a surefire way to spark a deep and meaningful conversation with anyone you may encounter. And, in the most dire of emergencies, "we know we can shoot up a little flare-prayer and God is always able to give us the words to say." However, one should always take appropriate caution "not to be too overly friendly with people of the opposite gender, as that can send the wrong kind of message!"
As luck would have it, we have only to look to the Duggar parents to find examples of more decorous ways to approach intimate dialogues. As we learn:
Many times our parents have guests over and then ask if it would be okay if we watch one of Jim Sammons's Financial Freedom Seminar messages together from embassyinstitute.org and then discuss it afterward. Once they watch one message, most people want to go through the whole series.
With a few final nuggets of wisdom, the volume comes to a close. The authors graciously offer an obligatory apology for daring to burden the reader with their inane female ramblings -- "Thank you for sticking with us through this super-long chapter!" As they continue:
We know we've shared a lot of concepts about relationships, but it is our prayer that God will direct and encourage you as you begin to make them part of your own lives.
As you go off and begin your own personal journey towards relationship rapture, you may find encouragement in the idea that -- despite their celebrated name -- the Duggar Girls are not just some faceless paragons of virtue. As the author biographies on the back inside cover remind us, these are regular people, with their own unique interests and capacities. While Jessa might be found "memorizing scripture" or "discipling friends," Jill would rather spend her time "counseling girls via phone, text, in person, or email." Jana "stays busy managing the family mailroom," and Jinger? She's "always full of energy, that is, when she has a cup of coffee in her hand!"
And with that cheeky witticism, I close the book and begin my quest towards docile, denim Duggarhood -- I wish you nothing but blessings as you enter this season of life!

2020.07.06 03:37 chacoman1 Separation Help

I find myself separated from my wife. We have been married 11 years and in our 40s. I agree with her that I have not been the best partner and would like to try to fix our differences if possible. She thinks that I should consult a therapist before we do couples therapy. I bit about myself. I am an immigrant from latin America. Came here when I was 3. Life was not easy but honestly my parents shielded us from the many issues they faced especially me the youngest. I am educated and have a good job. I have my mother's determination to just keep on keeping on. I have my fathers financials intelligence to some extent. He is highly educated but has not had a great career here in the USA for many different reasons. Back home in Honduras he was really successful in his field. I seek his advice primarily. I dont recall much intimacy between my parents growing up. They loved us kids very much and gave us a lot of attention and were strict. I learned a few years ago my father has two other children ouside of the marriage with my mom. I have not broken our fidelity. At 40, I am paranoid of not having enough saved or just spending too much money. I have found that I have developed bitterness to other people. I compare myself with others and if others. I have a hard time communicating with my wife. If we talk or debate about things I usually piss her off instead of help. In my mind I think I am being logical. My wife has issues of depression and anxiety. She takes medicine for this. She is educated but has trouble holding jobs which really really bothers me. She has tried to do her own creative business which have not been successful which bothers me. I do wish that I had here entrepreneur spirit but I always seek shelter over risk. My personality does not help me. I can blame it on my up bringing but maybe that has molded me. Ultimately I want us to work things out. I dont even know were to start.

2020.06.24 20:57 Mcheetah2 What I learned about BDD and what I think is the cure to it... (Part 1)

So, I haven't been on here, for a while. I was told by my doctor a while ago I had/have BDD. She thinks I have it, at least. I'm a male in my early 30's. I hate most things about my physical appearance, especially my height. I'm only 180cm, shorter than all my male friends and around the same height as most of the women I dated and grew up with. Only female family members (none of whom I get along with) are much shorter than me, and not around the 170-183 mark. I hated for a LONG time. I had somewhat "incel" thoughts ("incel," as in the "forever alone" term, not the SJW term for "hating women and being Alt-right.") I don't consider myself as such, though. But I did have a lot of pity parties. Sometimes, I still feel lonely. However, here's what I learned...

All of our thoughts just exist in our head and get created by the society we live in. ALL OF THEM.

I hated being short, being shorter than everyone I knew, being "short" at best and "average" (a shitty-ass fucking term to call someone insignificant, disposable, and worthless) at worst. But here's the thing... What if you grew up somewhere else? What if you lived in a different time era? What if you weren't given these negative thoughts by society that you're too short, too ugly, too fat, too dark, too mannish, too feminine as a guy, etc? ALL of our thoughts are the product of a messed up society. And well... Have you seen our society?!
Not to take the Black Pill, but most human beings are selfish assholes and our society is shitty in most parts of the world. Even the "good" parts, like the US, Canada, Sweden, the UK, The Netherlands, Australia, Japan, etc (ruined by politics and corruption), and the bad parts are bad for obvious reasons (India, Brazil, Mexico, the Middle East, Honduras, and other third-world hell holes). But even in those parts of the world, they aren't worried about the shape of their face, or how short of a man they are. It's not to say "your feelings don't matter," but more to say "you're feelings are based on something that doesn't exist." This bullshit need to get validation from strangers in such a shitty society. To feel "loved and wanted" by people who would turn on you at the drop of a hat.
Family is pretty much the ONLY thing that matters in this world. Family and friends. Everything else is pointless bullshit. But platinum and diamond quality family and friends can be enough for many of us to be happy. To feel wanted. To feel loved. The problem is... Many of us don't have that. So we seek eternal validation from the outside world. "Maybe I'll be loved if I'm a 177 cm supermodel with a perfect ass and tits?" Or "maybe I'll be loved if I look like a 22 year old version of Dwayne Johnson and won the genetic lottery?" The fact is, you're chasing after the approval of a shitty society filled with shitty people. For the most part. Have you seen celeb culture? How sick and fucked up Hollywood is?
Once again: Your insecurities and fears are based on the society you come from. They are not objective negatives. This sounds simple and easy, I know. But few of us can actually take this in and absorb it.
One of the biggest problems is that people expect society to kiss their ass for them, when in reality, nature itself is cruel as a motherfucker. You think animals in the wild get emotional validation? That's why some of us often take our loved ones for granted. And others (like me) never have loved ones or family members who cared about you, to begin with. You see, as humans, we're always wanting more. Just like selfishness, greed is an innate human trait. Even billionaires and people married to ten-out-of-tens with hearts of gold are always looking to get more money or cheat on their partners. Many people are never satisfied. And that's because, they are trying to fill a hole in their heart with something. They aren't happy deep down inside. And that comes from trying to improve your self and your soul, not your body or your bank account. So many people work shitty jobs to buy things they think will make them happy and have it ass-backwards. They don't work jobs that will make them happy so that they have little to worry about buying. And yeah, I get it. It's not easy to get your dream job. But this philosophy of superficiality that permeates our society is why so many people hate their bodies, and why many others commit suicide or commit crimes and end up in prison. Is THIS the fucked-up society you want to seek validation from? As for seeking approval from one's self? Why, your body doesn't need to be perfect for that. Granted, it'd help. But I believe health and fitness is more important for that than how you actually look. And this is coming from a fat guy (who wants to lose weight, but has never succeeded, so far).
One important thing you must know... You CANNOT seek others' validation. You CANNOT expect others to kiss your ass for you and give in to your every whim, let alone demand others do so. A lot of transwomen do this, with the pronoun stuff and "pretend for me" stuff. No. People are not obligated to kiss your ass and play along with you. No more than women are obligated to date/sleep with any unattractive lonely man out there (which I definitely qualify as). And no more than any hunky multi millionaire bachelor is obligated to marry you and make you his wife. People NEED to get over this entitlement to their feelings. It's like there's a rainstorm outside and instead of just enduring the wet rain, you want people to walk around with an umbrella for you and form a human circle around you as you walk to shield you from the water. Get over it. It's not going to kill you. And neither are people's words and judgment towards you. BELIEVE ME, I know how shitty we can LET the world make us feel. But we are LETTING the world make us feel this way. Every time we believe we are not good enough for such a broken, Clown World society out there. Every time we hate ourselves because we are not perfect.
I still do not like the way I look, down to my loathsome, hyper-shitty height that's short, but not short enough for anyone to feel sympathy towards you or get any benefits off it. It's "common short." I still hate it. I probably always will. But I acknowledge that it came from women always rejecting me for not being tall enough to date them because i wasn't six foot+. And I internalized that hatred and feeling of inferiority they made me feel throughout my 18 to 20-something years. I mostly hate my shortness due to what I want to see in the mirror, not society. However, fuck society. Who cares what they want? I mean, you shouldn't.
So next time you hate yourself, just think about you being stranded on a desert island, all alone from society, and think how "useful" that fix or cure to that flaw or insecurity you have would come in handy to your survival on an island. Probably won't be too useful, will it? Now go ahead and learn to live life like you're on a desert island inside your mind. None of the things that make you cry and keep you up at night are really as painful as you think they are, are they? Do they compare to the sudden loss of a loved one? Or the immediate shock you're sick and going to die? Or maybe even the shock that you're pregnant?
There's a lot to worry about in the world. What people (who don't love you) think of you, shouldn't be one of them. WAY easier said than done, I know...

2020.06.14 06:52 PapiStalin Honest question, why not India?

It’s late for me so I might just repost this tomorrow/if I don’t respond that’s why
I’m looking to see why this sub is so “opposed”to getting closer ties with India as a trade partner and key ally in the fight for democracy?
These are my main thinking points on the matter. I’m looking to see any refutes to any and why so. Genuinely curious to see what you guys think.
-India is the most developed nation for mass industrial that isn’t China. I see a lot of points about development in Latin America, Nigeria, Indonesia, etc but a lot of these nations (or regions) have large scale stability/infrastructure problems that drastically reduce the ability to set up industry. I’m majoring in Agronomy in hopes of working in Guatemala and Honduras so this is something I’m keenly aware of.
-While Hindu extremist populism is on the rise, India has dealt with it before and it isn’t as severe as many other “extremist” or undemocratic nations we deal with (Saudis cough cough)
-India is growing no matter what, so its best we try and help them transition without them ruining the environment not just for themselves but for the globe as well and gain an ally in the process
-India as a military force could help stability on an international scale in the same way we do (hot take and drastically over simplified I know)
I’m honestly curious to see what you guys think, as this is the one subreddit where people aren’t massive cunts in comment sections and know a lot about what they talk about. Thanks for the time!

2020.05.26 08:38 EleventhTry [DIPLOMACY] The Miami Conference

Department of State

Harry S. Truman Building, Washington, D.C.

As the economic crisis originating from a massive downturn in the Panamanian economy has spread into Central America as a whole, we believe that work must be done immediately to curb a rapid spike in regional poverty and as such we wish to work with all of our regional partners in Central America to mitigate the impacts of the economic damage and to end the crisis before it spirals further. That said, the following nations have been invited to Miami, Florida to discuss the ongoing situation in Central America in a means to stymie a future depression. The following nations have been invited:

  • Republic of Cuba
  • United Mexican States
  • Republic of Nicaragua
  • Commonwealth of Belize
  • Republic of El Salvador
  • Republic of Guatemala
  • Republic of Honduras
  • Republic of Costa Rica
  • Republic of Panama
  • Republic of Colombia

We believe that through appropriate multilateral efforts to ensure economic security, we will come out of this stronger than before the crisis.

One of President Kennedy's main tenants in foreign policy is mutual respect. For decades, centuries even, the United States has time and time again refused to give its southern neighbors the proper respect in which they deserve. We hope that we can change this negative precedent to establish a new foreign policy in which we work hand in hand to shed off the problems of old. Whether the United States can assist our neighbors through fair, and moderated investment, bailouts, or assistance otherwise, we believe it is a necessity that this must be stopped dead in its tracks and will do all it takes to do so.

2020.05.23 15:00 s810 Old Austin Tales - Lost Airports of the Late 1940s

Sorry to do a wall of text post for two weeks in a row but there are no photos on the internet of the subjects of today's post. This one has been stewing in me for a while and I have to get it off my chest.
There is an old internet site, about as old as Google, called Abandoned and Little Known Airfields. For this area, the website divides the old airports into those on the East side and those on the West. You can see names like Haile Airport and University Airport and their locations, also Penn Field and Austin Municipal (Mueller). Also various airports in the surrounding area. But come to find out that this site isn't complete!
One of the lost airports that isn't on the list was east of where Penn Field was in World War I, southeast of St. Edwards University on the eastern side of South Congress where I-35 crosses today. It was called St. Edwards Airport or Austin Aero Service. The other was called Aero-Tel Airport and was somewhere off of 183 in what today is the northwest part of town. Both were started during WWII and both gone by 1950 for different reasons.
I first read about these airports in a book I've mentioned here quite a bit called Austin, Cleared for Takeoff Aviators, Businessmen, and the Growth of an American City by Kenneth B. Ragsdale. This is an amazing book so full of little known facts and stories about the early age of the airplane in Austin. I've copied a great deal from it here before but for the purposes of today's tale I'm going to take the liberty of copying another snippet from Chapter Six. Getting right to it:
Enacted by Congress as the Serviceman’s Readjustment Act of 1944, commonly referred to as the G.I. Bill of Rights, that legislation provided unemployment benefits, hospitalization, funding for schooling and technical training, and low-interest loans to purchase homes, farms, and small businesses. The bill’s educational provisions were sufficiently broad to include most fields of endeavor, including aviation. The Veterans Administration, in cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration, designed a flight training program to enable returning servicemen, both with or without previous flight training, to earn a living in aviation. The G.I. Bill proved to be another major economic boost for aviation, especially for the fixed base (airport) operators. Participating FBOs negotiated individual contracts with the Veterans Administration, outlining specific courses of study, with the relative cost of each.
The approved curriculum included four flight courses: Private Pilot, Commercial Pilot, Flight Instructor, and Instrument Rating. The Certificate of Charges included 65-horsepower aircraft, dual instruction at $10 per hour; solo practice, $8 per hour; aircraft over 145-horsephower, dual instruction, $18 per hour, solo practice, $15 per hour; ground school instruction for all courses, $0.70 per hour. Each course had a minimum and maximum completion time allowable. The minimum time for the Commercial Pilot Course was 288 hours; the maximum, 308 hours. The maximum cost could not exceed $1,781.10 When the government launched the G.I. flight training program in 1946, it appeared to reconfirm what most people in aviation already believed—in postwar America, practically everyone would own an airplane. And furthermore, the financial benefits available to the FBOs spelled opportunity for many young pilots hoping to enter the aviation business.
It was, however, the established Austin FBOs—Ragsdale Flying Service, Browning Aerial Service, and the Haile Airport—that first began flight instruction under the new G.I. program. Others would follow. William D. Pfeil, a former flight instructor at Ragsdale Flying Service, was the first local pilot to embark on that new venture; he simply moved across the airport and set up business as Austin Flying Service in the new west side hangar. His advertising campaign addressed what many perceived as the new era of aviation: “Never Too Young to Fly. Don’t Wait. Learn to Fly Now. Be Ready to Take Advantage of the Many Opportunities that will be Afforded Both the Commercial and Sportsman Pilot After the War.”
Pfeil’s promotion apparently reached a receptive audience; on December 31, 1945, he reported income for five part-time employees. However, the success Pfeil anticipated was not immediately forthcoming. By March 31, 1946, his staff had dwindled to two; Mary Waurine “Ziggy” Hunter, his flight instructor, was top earner at $576.58. Pfeil realized if he was to remain in the aviation business he needed two things—an infusion of cash and experienced business management. He found both in James B. Cain. Cain had learned to fly in the CPT program at Schreiner Junior College in Kerrville, Texas. After graduating from Southern Methodist University in 1942, with a major in engineering and a minor in business administration, he joined Ragsdale Flying Service as a flight instructor in the navy V-5 program.
Later Cain transferred to active duty, became a navy educational officer, retired in March 1946, and returned to Austin hoping for a career in aviation. On learning that Pfeil was an operating Austin FBO, he discussed the business with Pfeil, and they foresaw how, with their combined resources, Austin Flying Service would prosper under their joint guidance. The benefits appeared obvious. Both had commercial instructor’s ratings and wide experience in flight training, and both came from fairly affluent backgrounds. And so, in April 1946, with high expectations, Cain and Pfeil joined forces in the Austin Flying Service. They made immediate changes. First, they renegotiated their lease, which afforded the company more space for ground school classes. After surveying the company’s refurbished facility, they made another executive decision. “We looked at each other and decided, ‘Gee, you gotta have airplanes to fly,’” Cain recalled, “and we didn’t have any airplanes.” In order to purchase the flight training equipment, the partners established a loan at The Fidelity State Bank of Austin, committing Cain’s stock as security. With that loan—and there would be others—they purchased two tandem Interstate “Cadets” for flight training. “We had good business, and surprisingly, we got some students,” Cain added. “And we kept getting more students.”
Next, the partners began expanding their services. They added a ground school, began offering complete aircraft and engine repair service, and developed an aircraft sales program. The Houston-area Ercoupe distributor agreed to “floor plan” his aircraft with Austin Flying Service. As the first Ercoupe dealer in Central Texas, Cain launched an innovative sales program for an equally innovative aircraft. The all-metal, twin-tail Ercoupe was one of the first commercial aircraft to employ a tricycle landing gear and the first (and only) plane controlled by a single wheel, similar to the steering wheel on an automobile. Training time averaged about five hours, but it was the safety factor that made the craft most appealing: the Ercoupe was certified “incapable of spinning” by the Civil Aeronautics Administration. With the standard model selling for less than three thousand dollars, Cain envisioned the University of Texas student body as a potentially fertile and unexploited sales target. To showcase the new craft, he leased a vacant lot one block west of the University campus, which he enhanced with flood lights, recorded music, and a pretty coed seated in the silver metal Ercoupe. Although the display attracted a lot of attention, there was no student rush to purchase airplanes. The company did, however, sell some Ercoupes, which prompted them to negotiate for the Bellanca and Luscombe dealerships to compete with Ragsdale Flying Service’s Cessnas.
But success had its downside; the city continued to raise the rent on the hangar at Mueller. At that point the partners made another critical decision; they abandoned Mueller and established their own airport. On May 21, 1946, they purchased fifty-four acres on Burnet Road (now Research Boulevard) northwest of Austin, for $500 per acre. They made a small down payment with manageable monthly payments. And in order to provide adequate space for two 2,000-foot runways, the company leased an additional one hundred acres north of the original tract. Their site possessed a distinct advantage; it was located beyond development, well north of the Austin city limits. Cain and Pfeil also changed the name of the firm; Aero-Tel reflected Cain’s vision of the future. Cain foresaw aviation assuming a greater role in business and industry in postwar America. He envisioned the postwar business executive traveling in his personal aircraft and landing at private airports that provided on-site hotel accommodations, conference facilities, automobile rentals, plus aircraft service.
Construction on the site began on July 1, 1946. The company erected two hangars, a small office building, and a classroom for ground school instruction, but slated a hotel facility for future development. The partners financed the major construction with bank loans, although they did much of the work themselves. Accounts for services they could not provide themselves they resolved by offering flying lessons as compensation. Cost cutting became a way of life. Needing metal for hangar construction, Cain ordered 39,100 pounds of corrugated sheet metal from the War Assets Administration, and to further reduce costs, Cain learned to weld. In February 1947, the company engaged E. B. Sneed, owner of Special Equipment Company, to grade two runways, which were surfaced with gravel and caliche. The cost, $1,755.51, cited in a promissory note, was subsequently covered by teaching Sneed to fly. To house their original flight equipment, the partners purchased a 40x 28ft Quonset hut for $4,133.68, with $2,668 as down payment and $1,465.68 due upon completion. In maximizing use of the restricted quarters, they parked the airplanes tilted nose-down on a five-gallon can covered with a cushion to prevent propeller damage.
By September 1946, Aero-Tel Airport was fully operative, offering government-approved flight instruction, complete aircraft and engine repair service, plus airplane storage. The company was soon doing good business; with the Ercoupe and Luscombe dealerships they competed with Ragsdale’s Cessnas, and with the Bellancas they developed a charter service. “We also had a sub-dealership with Aeronca, and were buying, renovating, and reselling military surplus airplanes,” Cain said. “We were selling airplanes all around the country.” And a growing number of students were finding their way to the Burnet Road airport for flight instruction.
The company’s training fleet consisted of ten aircraft, which included a Piper J-5 “Cub,” Aeronca “Champion,” Luscombe “Silvaire,” plus a war surplus Stearman PT-17 and a Vultee BT-13A. Only three of the aircraft were of pre–World War II design. And things were going to get better. On October 3, 1946, the partners received an Amended Approval of Veterans Administration authorization, changing the location of the operation from Austin Mueller airport to Aero-Tel Airport. In December, the comppany expanded its sales department to include a Culver dealership; CIT financed the purchase of the first demonstrator. Before year’s end the Aeronautical Engineering Department of the University of Texas launched a flight training program and contracted with Aero-Tel to provide the instruction. The University subsequently purchased five new Piper J3-C Cubs for the program, which were also based at Aero-Tel. The company had definitely entered the success mode; January 1, 1947, assets totaled $76,257.13. One month later that figure reached $170,982.47. With assets came a larger staff; the company engaged a receptionist and an accountant, paying the latter with flying lessons.
A large portion of the company’s income came from dealing in surplus military aircraft, an operation in which Pfeil exhibited special interest. It was that special interest that eventually forged a change in company ownership. When Pfeil’s expenditures exceeded what Cain considered sound business judgment, he offered to purchase Pfeil’s interest in the company. On February 4, 1947, both partners signed the document terminating the partnership, which provided Pfeil “a certain sum of money.” Continuing alone at the helm of Aero-Tel, Cain looked forward to an optimistic future. On March 24, 1947, the company reported twenty-five G.I. students, who had flown 216:10 hours, yielding $1,875.67.21 That income was destined to continue. On May 9, the Veterans Administration informed Cain his contract would be extended through June 30, 1948. The following month the War Department designated Aero-Tel as the training site for Officers Reserve Corps liaison pilots to maintain proficiency. The contract authorized six pilots to fly four hours per month at eight dollars per hour at government expense.
That income helped replenish the company’s coffers. On August 11, Aero-Tel received $960 from the War Department for 120 hours of solo flying. The G.I. veterans, however, remained the company’s more constant income source. Between April 1 and September 30, 1947, Aero-Tel received $21,181.83, “for tuition, supplies, equipment, etc., furnished beneficiaries of the Veterans Administration.” VA payments, however, constituted less than half of Aero-Tel’s income. During the year the company’s deposits totaled $47,270.82. There were, however, major expenses. For the period April 2, 1947, through February 20, 1948, the company borrowed $20,685 from The Fidelity State Bank of Austin, which was repaid on schedule.22 Attempting to further broaden his income base, Cain leased the Taylor, Texas, airport, assigned an employee there, and launched a satellite FBO operation. After some six months, difficulties encountered with the city government prompted him to abandon that project. He then leased the Smithville airport, which he operated successfully for about a year. By the end of 1947, G.I. enrollment had begun to decline, with only nine students enrolled in the commercial pilot course. The downward trend continued. The following year bank deposits dropped almost 50 percent, from $47,270.82 to $27,440.28. Note payments also declined. With Veterans Administration vouchers no longer available as loan security, Cain was forced to turn to his personal resources to keep the company solvent.
On March 24, 1948, he gave The Fidelity State Bank five hundred shares of West Ohio Gas Company stock as loan collateral, valued at $5,000.23 Cain was also preoccupied with other matters, an airplane crash, in particular. While instructing a student in a Stearman PT-17, the engine lost power on takeoff. As the aircraft approached the southern boundary of the field, Cain faced a critical decision: should he attempt to fly over or under the utility lines. He made the wrong choice; the wheels of the aircraft became entangled in the power lines, dragging down two utility poles, and thrusting the ailing craft nose first into the middle of Burnet Road. In the final seconds before the crash, Cain cut the ignition switch, avoiding a fire. It was, however, Cain’s previous handiwork that actually saved the two pilots. A few days before the crash, he had installed a thick layer of foam across the instrument panel. “If I hadn’t done that it probably would have killed us both,” Cain explained. “I hit that thing so hard [in the crash] that my fingers went through the aluminum panel.” Employing a military training practice, Cain encouraged his student to get in another aircraft immediately and fly a short while to regain his confidence. “He flew for about thirty minutes, landed, got out, and said, ‘I’ll see you tomorrow.’” There was, however, no tomorrow; the student never returned.
For Cain, the crash represented a double tragedy; he had lost both an airplane and a student at a time he could ill afford to lose either. After some two years as an FBO, Cain began to reassess his role in aviation; Aero-Tel was not fulfilling his hopes for the future. He had achieved a measure of success, but a portion of that success came from temporary institutional sources. And by early 1948, when it appeared the G.I. funding for flight training was nearing an end, Cain’s great uncle and surrogate father, C. H. Coleman, wrote him on February 25, inquiring about “the 200Million cut in G.I. ‘Training-For-Fun.’” Coleman, suggesting that Cain abandon the project, added further, “If you could sell the land with all of your equipment of approximately $60,000, it would be a good thing; the value of the land itself would help sell the equipment.” Although Cain had created substantial indebtedness in establishing the business, he was not ready to abandon the project. He did, however, sell some unneeded training craft to meet his immediate obligations; by April 15, he had reduced his inventory to only four aircraft valued at $8,780.86. With both student traffic and airplane sales declining, Cain began to reassess his economic position. On June 2, 1948, he negotiated a one-year lease with the University of Texas to operate the University’s Flight Training Program. The rent was three hundred dollars per month. Cain still had the use of the facility, plus a guaranteed income.
Change, however, was in the offing; following the death of his uncle in April 1949, Cain began commuting almost weekly to Athens, Texas, to help settle his uncle’s estate. In view of his ongoing responsibilities in Athens, he accepted a year’s extension on the University’s lease. However, after evaluating his responsibilities, Cain liquidated his remaining inventory, and in January 1950 established permanent residence in Athens. After August 1949, Aero-Tel Airport was no longer listed in the classified section of the Austin telephone directory. James B. Cain’s determination to carve a niche for himself in aviation’s future was shared by many other young pilots leaving military service.
Okay let me stop here for a moment. There are ads for Aero-Tel in the Statesman archive. There is also a photo of the display plane they set up as a marketing gimmick at 24th and Rio Grande. Notice how it says the airport is located on "Burnet Hi-way". I think this means today's 183. Dr. Ragsdale called it "Burnet Road/Research Blvd." in his book but as we all know, Research Blvd. is 183. I have seen other references to the route we now know as 183, previously State Hwy. 29, being called The Burnet Highway but I think people started calling the same route The Jollyville Road at some point around the same time. It gets even more complicated when you consider that the old route 29 once followed the current route of Airport Blvd. At any rate I can't say for sure where this airport was located, and it doesn't appear on any old maps that I can find. Considering the topography of the land around that part of North Austin, I would guesstimate it would have to have been somewhere east of the Balcones fault line where the grade of the land is more flat and less rocky. Perhaps it was somewhere around where Burnet Road crosses 183 but that's total speculation on my part. It couldn't have been too far east and still be described as "northwest", also because University Airport was already located near where N.Lamar meets Airport Blvd today. Strong clues where it might have been come from this 1948 Statesman report about a grass fire which destroyed one of Aero-tel airplane. If anyone here wants to take a guess where it was I'm eager to hear it.
And so now we move on to the second of the lost airports not covered on the website. This was St. Edwards airport, the home of a company called Austin Aero Service. And unlike the previous place the location is well known. Not a trace is left today.
At approximately the same time Cain purchased the Burnet Road property to establish Aero-Tel, Charles Quist, a recently discharged Air Force pilot, launched a similar operation some ten miles south, near St. Edward’s University. The two had much in common. Long before Quist was discharged from the Air Force in January 1946, he also had decided to continue in aviation. The G.I. Bill seemed to offer that opportunity, not as a student, but as a contracting FBO. But first he needed a base of operations. With Ragsdale well established at Mueller, and Browning and Haile operating from their individual fields, Quist examined several sites in South Austin and decided on a sixty-seven-acre tract owned by St. Edward’s University. The rent, one dollar per acre per month, seemed reasonable. Construction began immediately; Quist graded two sod runways (the longest was 2,000 feet), built a hangar, and on May 26, 1946, acquired his first airplane, a twoplace Interstate “Cadet.” Austin Aero Service, Inc. began as a family endeavor. Mary Catherine Quist, Charles’ sister and a former World War II WASP pilot, joined her brother in the operation; she contributed five hundred dollars, as did their parents. With a three-thousand-dollar investment, the company began operations with two war surplus PT-23s. The Quist family business subsequently grew into a partnership. Shortly after establishment of the field, popular Austin aviatrix Mary Waurine (Ziggy) Hunter joined the firm. She contributed no funding but had wide experience in aviation, especially as a flight instructor. They were soon joined by another returning veteran, Bruce Hallock, a former navy PBY pilot who also wanted to be in “the flying business.” Hallock contributed some funding, plus two airplanes. With an abundance of students, Austin Aero Service prospered from the beginning. In addition to the G.I. trainees, Quist developed a cooperative student-training program with St. Edward’s University, in which students received university credit for flight training. The individual students paid for the instruction: six dollars per hour solo and eight dollars dual. That was in addition to the ten dollars per hour the company received for the G.I. instruction. And as the student body grew, so did the training fleet. At one time the company owned or operated fifteen airplanes. Quist later acquired dealerships for both Aeronca and Luscombe airplanes. In addition, Hallock developed a charter business with his two Stinsons—Dallas and back, for fifty dollars. The future looked bright. “We were receiving $8 per hour training G.I.s,” Hallock recalled. “With gasoline at twenty cents a gallon, we were making money.” There were, however, blemishes on Austin Aero Service’s record of operation. Mary Catherine lost one student, a G.I. who violated a cardinal rule in flight training—“You don’t buzz.” On his first solo flight, he, unfortunately, violated that rule. He “buzzed” his mother’s house, lost control of the airplane, and crashed and burned in the street in front of her house. The company also lost another airplane in Mexico. Bruce Hallock developed a profitable import business, flying fresh lobster from Belize, British Honduras, to San Antonio, Texas, where the Gunter Hotel purchased five hundred pounds each week at sixty cents per pound. On one return flight, while using Charles Quist’s Aeronca “Sedan,” the airplane developed engine trouble and Hallock made an emergency landing on a private airport in Tampico, Mexico. With Hallock unable to continue the flight to Austin, Quist and a mechanic flew down to Tampico in another airplane, a Stinson, to replace a damaged piston. After making the necessary repairs, Quist elected to fly the Aeronca back to Austin himself. However, taking off from Tampico, the engine quit, and he crash-landed into a building belonging to a railroad company. Quist sustained serious injuries, including a broken leg, facial lacerations, and a severely scarred left hand. But that’s when his troubles really began.
Admitted first to a PEMEX hospital, Quist was refused treatment, other than first aid, because it was a company hospital. The main hospital in Tampico also refused treatment since the accident occurred outside its service area. When taken to another hospital, an inept attendant placed his broken leg in a cast without setting it, bandaged his face, and sutured his lacerated hand. And the worst was yet to come. Quist discovered he was in deep trouble with both the Mexican government and the railroad company, and was placed under house arrest in a Tampico hotel. Learning that “they wanted a lot of money,” he hastened his exit from Mexico by first bribing the hotel manager, and later the airport guard placed on his Stinson. Accompanied by his mechanic, Quist quickly took off, headed for Brownsville, Texas, refueled, and later that day landed at St. Edward’s Airport. He abandoned the crashed Aeronca “Sedan” in Mexico, and never returned.33 In retrospect, the Mexico crash appears as a harbinger of change. Mary Catherine had married and left the company. Charles purchased Hunter’s interest in 1947 and, shortly after the Tampico crash, acquired Hallock’s interest. The company, nevertheless, enjoyed some four years of profitable operation, with income generated from two primary sources—the G.I. Bill and St. Edward’s University students. “When the G.I. Bill ran out, we finally ran out of qualified students,” Hallock remembered. “The business just kinda dried up in the late 1940s.34 Charles Quist was more specific: “I shut it down, liquidated the business, and sold the training fleet, some airplanes for as little as $400. Had a lot of assets but no money.” He, nevertheless, maintained a positive assessment of his four-year tenure at St. Edward’s Airport. “We taught a lot of students to fly,” Quist recalled, “helped others to launch a career in aviation, and for a while made some money.” 35 But most important of all, in addition to creating Austin Aero Service, he and Hallock were able to fulfill their post–World War II ambitions— they remained in aviation. Quist later joined the Air National Guard, advanced to the rank of colonel, and became commander of the 149th Fighter Group at Kelly Air Force Base. Hallock joined the Chance-Vought Corporation as a flight test engineer and later became staff pilot for the University of Texas Applied Research Laboratory, flying a Douglas DC-3 in the research and development of missile guidance systems. Nothing remains today of St. Edward’s Airport or the Austin Aero Service. Construction of Interstate Highway 35 in the 1950s bisected the landing field; the parking lot of the Internal Revenue Service now occupies what was once a portion of the north-south runway.
Austin Aero Service has a checkered history which the book barely gets into. After a crash in May of 1947, Ziggy Hunter left to take a job with the State. Things started to turn around when they were able to get a high profile contract with the Statesman for newspaper delivery to outlying Hill Country regions. The Civil Air Patrol organized an air show at the St. Edward Airport in the summer of 1949 and then the next news about them was one of the partners taking off with a plane and a car to Arizona after running out on the leases.
I'm already way long but there you have the full story as I can find it. I might as well go for the gold and post an epilogue for this post from the next part of the book. This is only one small chapter in a much larger story and if anyone here is interested in the topic I highly recommend picking up the book. It's available in e-book form on the library website for free!
The closure of two privately owned and operated airports within the span of two years, while individually significant, was also symbolic of even greater changes that were occurring in postwar Austin. The city had entered an aggressive growth pattern. The decade of the 1940s brought 44,529 new citizens into the city; by 1950, more than 5,000 were arriving annually. That influx of humanity created a demand for new middle-class housing. As developers began searching for building sites north and northeast of the city, they were drawn instinctively to the unoccupied expanses of other private airports.
On March 12, 1948, Ella Campbell conveyed to L. L. McCandless, president of McCandless Homes, Inc., 29.15 acres, thereby creating the Skyview Addition, an area then occupied by the Haile Airport. By the end of 1950, Doc Haile had sold his remaining aircraft and terminated operations. Haile’s tenure at 5600 Avenue F, however, was predetermined long before Ella Campbell sold the property to McCandless. In November 1947, when the author purchased his first Austin home at 5414 Avenue F, two blocks south of the Haile Airport, he inquired about the noise factor. His realtor, Glen E. Lewis, reassured him, “Don’t worry. Doc’s gotta go. That land’s too valuable to land airplanes on.” Lewis, unknowingly, had articulated the metaphor for Austin airport controversy for the next half-century. Appreciating land values were indeed changing the face of Austin. As the city spread steadily northward, University Airport became the next target for development. The Brownings’ move to Mueller in September 1946 marked the last permanent occupancy at University Airport. On July 21, 1952, Webb Ruff and Myrtle N. Ruff deeded 22.98 acres to the Northway Crest Development Company, Inc., creating the Northway Crest subdivision. Thus, within the scope of some two years, all four of Austin’s original private airports had closed, leaving the city with a single, municipally owned landing facility. It would be there the two surviving FBOs, Ragsdale Flying Service and Browning Aerial Service, would continue their role as regional leaders in the field of general aviation. The economics of these transactions appeared to invalidate most people’s vision of the postwar aviation boom. Returning servicemen accorded higher priority to owning a home, getting an education, raising a family, and earning a livelihood within the traditional job markets. The airplane manufacturers were also forced to recognize the realities of the aviation marketplace.

2020.05.08 01:10 jacz30 I´ve come out two times and still regret me.

Hello, I am from Honduras, one of the most homophobic countries in the world, this is my story.
Since I was 11 years old I have had doubts about my sexuality, when I was 13 almost 14 I fell in love with this boy, that's another story but the fact that I had fallen in love with him had opened my eyes, I was bi.
I did what a teenager would do, tell a person you trust, I told a friend because I knew she would help me.
Then I was telling it to some friends who (apart from already knowing it) accepted me.
That same school year, well, let's say he had put gay porn on a usb of mine, some time later my dad asked me for it since he asked me to give it to him since he didn't have a smartphone. That same day when he went to bring me to class he says:
´´Explain to me what you have in this usb, you don't know what a shame´´
I told him that he should´t be surprise he had already know it.
He left me at my house, he told me that we would talk about this when he returned from work and my mother was at home, and my sister was asleep. That's why I send a txt to my mom explaining the situation, and I know she will see it until she is close to home, like a cousin who is very close to me. I talked to my parents later and they said they would forget, that they wanted me to try to change. I was filled with rage but I was calm because I thought they might kick me out or something.
A few months later, we were without a teacher in my classroom (we were all in a mess) and I liked to joke with one of my classmates and in that I cornered him and tried to kiss him jokingly, I had not noticed that a teacher was going passing and then I asked my partner that it is very meek that if they had asked him about the attempt to kiss and he said yes, at that moment I knew that later the school psychologist would call me and in that I admitted to being bisexual and the the next day my parents were summoned. Something I want to mention now that I have the opportunity is that the psychologist said "I would have understood if it had been a straight joke." My parents did the same to me again. And they almost punished me but it didn't happen anymore. Now I know that my mom was right that it was only a phase, now I know I'm gay :).

2020.05.05 21:34 FrumiousReads All This Talk about The Tiger King...what about The Tiger Lady Clara Philips?

Clara Phillips was married to Armour Phillips, who was an up and coming oil stock salesman during the 1920s. Side-note, I love stories set during the ‘20s. The absolute madness of that entire decade is astounding to me.
Anyway, Clara was married to Armour and they lived in a big fancy house in Los Angeles, and everything seemed to be going perfectly for the two of them. Armour worked as a rising star at his company, and Clara, who used to work as a chorus girl, got settled into her new house.
Except, Armour’s credit was souring, and with it, his marriage. He began having an affair with a widowed woman who worked at his bank, Alberta Meadows.
Clara apparently picked up on it quite quickly. That, or maybe Armour wasn’t trying that hard to hide it. She began to follow him, and through doing that was able to confirm her suspicions about his affair. And, she handled this in a way I feel any other person would do when they found their partner was cheating on them. She called one of her good friends, Peggy Caffey, who had also been a chorus girl, and they agreed to meet for drinks.
However, before she met up with her friend Peggy, she stopped by the store, and picked up a claw end hammer.
They drowned their sorrows, as was definitely understandable. And then, this is where a lot of inconsistencies come in.
One story says that the two women were walking back towards their home when Alberta just happened to drive by. They then waved her down and asked for a ride, which she gave.
Another story says that Clara told the cab driver to take them to either a neighborhood near Alberta’s house, or gave Alberta’s address, and it was there they ran into her.
Either way, somehow they ended up meeting up with Alberta that night. After some small talk, Clara asked if Alberta would give the two of them a ride to Clara’s sister’s house, near the top of a hill in Montecido Heights.
Clara directed Alberta to the end of a dirt road, where she then confronted her about sleeping with her husband.
Alberta got out of the car, denying the affair, and it was then that Clara got out of the car and punched her. At this point, Alberta started to run away back down the hill.
But when she did, her heel broke, and she fell. It was then that Clara caught up to her, bringing with her the hammer she’d bought earlier that day. She bashed it over her head, over and over again, until poor Alberta Meadows was dead. As if that wasn’t enough, she then raked the claw end of the hammer over her face. A police detective would later be quoted as saying it looked like she had been “mauled by a tiger.” This would stick with Clara Phillips, and be eventually what gave her the nickname of the “Tiger Lady.”
Peggy, of course, was hysterical at this point. She’d just watched one of her friends beat another woman to death.
Rather calmly, Clara got back into the car, and told her to tell no one. One source quotes her as saying, “Remember, you’re in this just as much as I am”, before using Alberta’s car to drive her home.
She then drives herself home, greeting her appropriately horrified husband in the driveway by saying, “She’s dead!” and then promising to cook him the best dinner he’s ever had.
Armour convinces her to go on the run. They take Alberta’s car and abandon it in Pomona, CA. Then, Armour takes her to a train station, where she boards a train heading to Tucson, AZ.
After she leaves, her husband starts having second thoughts. And he decides to go to the police, and spill the whole story.
Clara ends up getting picked up by police in Tucson, and it somehow gets even crazier from here.
See, of course her story became infamous in Los Angeles. She was a pretty, sweet faced girl who seemed to show absolutely no remorse for the crime she’d committed.
Her trial was set in September, and it was completely packed with reporters and others who were fascinated by her case.
Clara was sentenced to second degree murder, and began serving her sentence in the San Quentin prison.
On December 5th, 1922 Clara escaped from prison.
A story went around saying that she had been smuggled a hacksaw, cut the jail bars in her window, and climbed down the drainpipe. But, the reality was, she bribed the deputy on duty to let her go.
Clara was on the run for 4 months, and somehow made her way to Honduras, where she was eventually found in Tegulcigalpa. She eventually was able to be extradited to the United States, and as a condition of her extradition, she was able to be paroled in 1935.
During her remaining 13 years in prison, Clara trained as a dental assistant, fell in love with another convict who was working as an electrician named Thomas J. Price, and was a model prisoner.
About a year before her release, she divorced her husband for the man she fell in love with in prison. Around that time was also when Armour Phillips disappeared from public knowledge, unable to be found by friends, family, or media.
In 1935, she was released, although her plan upon release was unclear. “I want to go back into the world to be a useful citizen and a model housewife, and have babies.” Is what she told newspapers upon her release.

2020.05.05 21:29 FrumiousReads All this talk about Tiger King....what about Tiger Lady Clara Philips?

Alright y’all. Since having been quarantined, I, like many other people around the world, have been keeping up with what was related and trending on Netflix and I fell into the world of the Tiger King. One thing led to another, and I was looking to see if there were any women in history known as the Tiger Queen also known for murder and mayhem. Closest I found, that was a human person, was Clara Philips.
She was married to Armour Phillips, who was an up and coming oil stock salesman during the 1920s. Side-note, I love stories set during the ‘20s. The absolute madness of that entire decade is astounding to me.

2020.04.21 03:28 Kirbinski Timeline of COVID-19 Pandemic Events - President Trump did a great job! (Part 3)

March 1, 2020 - March 30, 2020
March 1: Joe Biden, in an interview on ABC’s This Week falsely said: "They have eliminated the office we set up -- we set up in the president's office to deal with pandemic diseases."
March 1: NY Governor Mario Cuomo announced "There is no reason for undue anxiety -- the general risk remains low in New York. We are diligently managing this situation and will continue to provide information as it becomes available."
March 2: Despite Coronavirus warnings, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio tweets to encourage New Yorkers to go on with their lives and gives recommendations for movies his Twitter followers should go out and see.
March 3: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi introduces the “No Ban Act” to end the travel bans.
March 3: The CDC lifted federal restrictions on coronavirus testing to allow any American to be tested for coronavirus, “subject to doctor’s orders.” Vice President Pence announced the CDC was lifting all federal restrictions on who can be tested for COVID-19: “Any American can be tested, no restrictions, subject to doctor’s orders.” Previously, testing was limited to only those who were exhibiting symptoms and had recently traveled to China or had been exposed to a known case. However, the supply of tests in particular regions would continue to be the most common binding constraint.
March 3: The White House announced President Trump donated his fourth quarter salary to fight the coronavirus.
March 4: The Trump Administration announced the purchase of approximately 500 million N95 respirators over the next 18 months to respond to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
March 4: Secretary Azar announced that HHS was transferring $35 million to the CDC to help state and local communities that have been impacted most by the coronavirus.
March 6: President Trump signed an $8.3 billion bill to fight the coronavirus outbreak. The bill provides $7.76 billion to federal, state, & local agencies to combat the coronavirus and authorizes an additional $500 million in waivers for Medicare telehealth restrictions.
March 7: NYC Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot (D) tells New Yorkers to take the subway and go out and enjoy life.
March 9: President Trump called on Congress to pass a payroll tax cut over coronavirus.
March 10: President Trump and VP Pence met with top health insurance companies and secured a commitment to waive co-pays for coronavirus testing.
March 10: First major event canceled by the Biden campaign because of coronavirus concerns. The Biden campaign replaced a large rally in Cleveland with a 200-person gathering in Philadelphia on Super Tuesday II.
March 11: President Trump: • Announced travel restrictions on foreigners who had visited Europe in the last 14 days (for those who had visited the Schengen Area – 26 European states that share open borders). • Directed the Small Business Administration to issue low-interest loans to affected small businesses and called on congress to increase this fund by $50 billion. • Directed the Treasury Department to defer tax payments for affected individuals & businesses and to provide $200 billion in “additional liquidity.” • Met with American bankers at the White House to discuss coronavirus. • Advocated for increase in respirator availability.
March 12: The FDA issued an EUA to Roche. Paul Brown, the head of Roche’s Molecular Solutions division, told The New Yorker, that “the company had been working on a test since February 1st” and that “the new tests, which are mostly automated, can make it possible for large testing companies such as Quest and LabCorp to test for COVID-19.” The CDC and state and local public health labs have been running tests manually. Reaching the scale of millions of tests will require automated tests on high throughput machines at large testing companies.
March 13: President Trump declared a national emergency in order to access $42 billion in existing funds to combat the coronavirus.
March 13: President Trump announced: • Public-private partnerships to open up drive-through testing collection sites (orders states to expand diagnostic testing for COVID-19). • A pause on interest payments on federal student loans. • An order to the Department of Energy to purchase oil for the strategic petroleum reserve.
March 13: The Food & Drug Administration Issued an emergency approval to Thermo Fisher for a coronavirus test within 24 hours of receiving the request.
March 13: HHS announced funding for the development of two new rapid diagnostic tests, which would be able to detect coronavirus in approximately 1 hour.
March 14: The Coronavirus Relief Bill passed the House of Representatives.
March 14: The Trump Administration: • Announced the European travel ban will extend to the UK and Ireland. • Announced a National Day of Prayer for Americans affected by coronavirus.
March 15: President Trump held a phone call with over two dozen grocery store executives to discuss on-going demand for food and other supplies.
March 15: HHS announced it is projected to have 1.9 million COVID-19 tests available in 2,000 labs this week. HHS Secretary Azar waived sanctions and penalties against any covered hospital that does not comply with various provisions of the HIPAA Privacy Rule related to patient privacy and consent, including the need “to obtain a patient’s agreement to speak with family members or friends involved in the patient’s care.” Previously, HIPAA privacy provisions and the Common Rule were holding up testing and the dissemination of information. According to an article in the New York Times, these kinds of requirements prevented labs from conducting coronavirus tests on samples collected for research purposes: Federal and state officials said the flu study could not be repurposed because it did not have explicit permission from research subjects; the labs were also not certified for clinical work. While acknowledging the ethical questions, Dr. Chu and others argued there should be more flexibility in an emergency during which so many lives could be lost. On Monday night, state regulators told them to stop testing altogether. On a phone call the day after the C.D.C. and F.D.A. had told Dr. Chu to stop, officials relented, but only partially, the researchers recalled. They would allow the study’s laboratories to test cases and report the results only in future samples. They would need to use a new consent form that explicitly mentioned that results of the coronavirus tests might be shared with the local health department. They were not to test the thousands of samples that had already been collected.
March 15: Google announced a partnership with the Trump Administration to develop a website dedicated to coronavirus education, prevention, & local resources.
March 15: All 50 states were contacted through FEMA to coordinate “federally-supported, state-led efforts” to end coronavirus.

March 20: In an opinion piece for the New York Times, Dr. David L. Katz wrote “Is Our Fight Against Coronavirus Worse Than The Disease?” “What we know so far about the coronavirus makes it a unique case for the potential application of a “herd immunity” approach, a strategy viewed as a desirable side effect in the Netherlands, and briefly considered in the United Kingdom.” “This focus on a much smaller portion of the population would allow most of society to return to life as usual and perhaps prevent vast segments of the economy from collapsing. Healthy children could return to school and healthy adults go back to their jobs. Theaters and restaurants could reopen, though we might be wise to avoid very large social gatherings like stadium sporting events and concerts. So long as we were protecting the truly vulnerable, a sense of calm could be restored to society. Just as important, society as a whole could develop natural herd immunity to the virus. The vast majority of people would develop mild coronavirus infections, while medical resources could focus on those who fell critically ill. Once the wider population had been exposed and, if infected, had recovered and gained natural immunity, the risk to the most vulnerable would fall dramatically.”
March 20: CNN White House reporter Stephen Collinson wrote a political analysis titled “Trump peddles unsubtantiated hope in dark times” in which he wrote “Big footing Vice President Mike Pence's sober, informative task force briefings, Trump exaggerates facts, bashes China, blames the Obama administration, lauds his once soaring economy and baits reporters while shoveling any blame away from himself. As the pandemic spreads like quicksilver across the US and questions mount about the federal government's response amid chronic shortages in hospitals, the White House seems to be trying to get everyone to look the other way. It's holding out the promise of hope and optimism to shift attention from the reality of alarming rises in infections, a building economic crisis, a shortage of ventilators, the federal government's botched coronavirus testing roll-out, and revelations that doctors were told to use bandanas as masks.” “His critics would argue that given months of warning from events in China his White House should have been far more prepared -- especially when it comes to a shortage of tests kits that still prevents public health chiefs from drawing up a full understanding of the scale of the pandemic in the US. The administration's emerging political strategy to evade blame is also evident in a coordinated White House and conservative media effort to saddle China with all the blame for the pandemic.”

March 20: Boston Globe columnist Michael A. Cohen urged networks to stop airing President Trump’s press briefings because he was spreading misinformation about a potential cure “Trump is spreading misinformation about the coronavirus – time to take away his microphone” “Practically every time Donald Trump speaks about the coronavirus pandemic he lies, exaggerates, offers false hope, and spreads misinformation. His statements are increasingly a menace to public safety. It’s time for cable news networks to stop giving him a platform for his untruths by refusing to provide live coverage of his press conferences.” “It’s bad enough that Trump is lying about his administration’s incompetent response to the coronavirus. Now he’s sowing doubt about the credibility of news organizations that are essential to providing clear and honest information to the American people.” “News outlets should thus treat Trump’s public statements like propaganda and misinformation — because that’s what they are. Fact-checking is essential, but it’s not enough. Airing his press conferences live, without immediate correction — which, because of the volume of Trump’s lies, is almost impossible to pull off — risks letting false information trickle out to the public.”
