2015.05.31 17:55 jwad650 The Pizza Game

"The Pizza Game" is meant to highlight generic lyrics in any song, but especially pop love songs, wherein the song is so generic, it could just as soon be about a piece of pizza than another human being. And therefore the song actually IS about Pizza. If a song passes all of the game criteria, it passes the pizza test, and you win the pizza game. Come play!

2020.09.28 20:54 sonickarma S2N - For me, one of the few songs on D/T that could stand to be a little longer.

It's no secret that starting with their self-titled album in 2013, Dream Theater has shifted their songwriting style to embrace a shorter, more concise writing style. Aside from Illumination Theory, the last time we saw a 10+ minute song was on A Dramatic Turn Of Events in 2011.
They've been able to execute this vision with varying degrees of success. Whereas I personally felt that the "less is more" approach hurt the self-titled album more than it helped it, I think that they actually pulled it off much better on D/T. Most of the songs on D/T feel exactly the right length for what they are. However, I feel that S2N is one of the few that could have been expanded a little bit more.
I love the ideas and energy present in S2N, and I wish that the guys had given us more of them! I feel that this song is too quick to go into the first chorus, for instance. I think that the first verse could have been longer, or maybe had a proper pre-chorus in place. I also wish that the instrumental sections were longer, many of the riffs and grooves present are just so damn tasty that I don't want them to be over just yet.
On the whole, though - I find S2N to be one of the more refreshing songs on the album, and despite its abridged nature, it gives me hope for the future of Dream Theater's sound.

2020.09.28 20:48 Serupael ForgottenVision: Preliminary Polls Posted to Provide Popular Participation Puns

Hi there!
In early October, ForgottenVision will open. And i need your help for the first edition!
Terrific Seru, but what is ForgottenVision?
ForgottenVision is the Andra Chansen for Eurovision - a second chance for real entries form Eurovision, entries that weren't winners or haven't exactly become classics. Buit we all have those personal favorites we're fond of, and just maybe, they'll do better on a second go?
So, in ForgottenVision, everyone enters a contest that fits the above description, exact criteria will be posted in an upcoming sign-up thread. And that is ForgottenVision.
Just to be clear Seru, this is for real, historic Eurovision entries?
Yes.
What about failed entries in the national finals? I have that one song from Melfest 2003...
Not for the first edition, that would be too complicated. But an interesting idea for next year!
Why so snarky?
Dunno, really. Had some fun here, i guess. Enjoy the cringe.
And why exactly, Mr. Smartass do you need our help?
As this is the first edition, i'm not exactly sure how this will go myself.
Okay, enough fake dialogue. I have created three polls and i'd love to hear your opinion on what might be suitable and welcome rules for the contest. Mainly. what time period should be covered. what entries should qualify as "forgotten" and if we should allow multiple entries from the same country.
You find the polls below and thank you so much for your help in advance! 😀 😋
Should multiple entries from the same country be allowed?
What time period should the inaugural contest cover)
What exactly is the definition of Forgotten?

2020.09.28 20:46 linariees20 C-Drama OST Recommendations

Basically what the title says lol
I’ll list out what I have in case of repetition. I usually download the full OST albums from dramas I’ve watched, but if it’s just single songs in the list, I only listened to that song and not the drama (don’t mind if you comment why you’d recommend that drama too lol)
OST Albums Downloaded:
Songs:
I’m looking for songs in Wu Xia/ Xian Xia dramas, preferably like AOL (Unsullied, Upwards Towards the Moon), TMOB/Pillow Book (就算没有如果, Heart Desire at Peace 心欲止水), Princess Weiyoung (If Heaven Has Compassion), The Song of Glory (Shadow) etc. Also, any “sweeter” songs like Blooming Flowers (TMOPB), Forest of Birds (Love & Destiny), Heavenly Gift (Princess Weiyoung) etc. thanks in advance! lol

2020.09.28 20:44 sadpotato231 Cross country road trip

5 weeks ago, my other half of 10 years passed away in our hometown of Traverse City, MI. On her deathbed, I told her that I would spread her ashes across the country. She told me to travel around and when I found a spot, I would know. I’ve been on the road for about a week and here is my story so far. I will update it and post pictures as I continue.
Notes on places I visit for Katie
1: Tahquamenon Falls - Paradise, Michigan
By complete coincidence, Katie and I were here 6 years from today. It was among the happiest memories of my life (and I hope hers), so I thought I would start here
Things seem to move at a different pace once you pass the mackinaw bridge. The trees are a deeper green. The chipmunks at home seem to be skittish and spastic in their movements. Here they seem to bounce with such enthusiasm that I half heartedly expect them to burst into song. While the rational part of my brain can reason that this is probably because they’re used to being constantly around people, the whimsical side of me believes that the UP is where old Disney movies are based.
The lower falls, while gorgeous, offered no room for hiking. You can basically see them from the parking lot.
The upper falls contains a hotdog/ice cream stand, restaurant/brewery an overpriced taco stand, and another gift shop all next to the parking lot. When Katie and I were here last, we loved the babrewery. I was worried that my memory was betraying me, debating whether I should treat myself to a burger and a beer. I was immediately disappointed to find that they had only 3 beers on tap. What I remembered as an illustrious brewery with multiple choices seemed to be overtaxed due to covid. I decided to head in anyways, ultimately deciding that if Katie were here with me, we would have had a beer and a meal before heading out on our expedition and another beer afterwards. As I’m waiting, I spot a bachelorette party heading into the bar and I am filled with immediate dread. There’s nothing wrong with getting married. Perhaps my time at Bry’s has jaded my view of bachelorette parties as a whole or perhaps it’s this recent loss. Regardless, a group of bachelorettes in their 20’s-early 30’s are the most obnoxious individuals on the planet.
The waitress won’t stop calling me hun, baby, and sweetie. I am annoyed entirely, but then I remember that I’m a man around her age, eating alone, and it probably pays off to feign interest in tourists. Still... read the room.
Holy mother of god, what is this burger made of?!? It’s so flavorful, perfectly cooked, and clearly I like bison more than I knew. The beer is honestly exactly as good as I remember it. It probably wouldn’t be a place that everybody would enjoy, but I completely remember why we loved this place. Whether it’s the high-vaulted ceilings or the abundance of woodwork, there is something about it that feels like camp for adults.
The upper falls “hike” has turned more into a paved walk. It’s still beautiful, but I remember more paths last time we were here. I think the water may have risen up over time and closed some trails off.
I hopped the fence and spread a small handful over the waterfall. She spread out with the wind and weightlessly floated over the waterfall. I feel appropriate about this as a site for her. I know how much we both loved being here together.
On my way back to the car after about an hour of pausing to let out a quiet goodbye I found the spot that I had carved our names 6 years ago today. I freshened the carving and went a little deeper in hopes that I’d see it next time I come out again.
On my way back I stopped into the bar for another beer, as I promised myself I would. Upon walking in I saw a young woman in a sundress with a man in blue jeans, a button up long sleeve, and the largest cowboy hat I have ever seen. I quickly surmised that they were from out of state and that this was their honeymoon. In moments like this, it’s extraordinarily difficult to not feel a tinge of jealousy and unjust spite.
2: Big Rapids
As if summer desired to give one last reprieve before yet another brutal winter to come, today was absolutely gorgeous. Jeans and a t-shirt was almost overkill.
Despite itself, I absolutely love this town. I believe that anyone who hears that views the statement with extreme skepticism. It may be that living here was the happiest point of my life, but I can’t help but find some charm in every street corner. Upon entering, one would assume that this is but another college/farm town that is only worthy of filling up on gas or stopping for a quick bathroom break. For many, this would be considered an astute observation. Things are odd here. Amidst the constant hustle and bustle of sleep deprived, overtaxed, and over-intoxicated college students exists a strange coalition of locals that have lived here their whole lives and all seem to be on a first name basis. They are a small town, jovial bunch of fine folks with a minor influx of money from the colleges.
After some debate towards where to eat, I settled on Szots. Szots is the home of a burger so delicious that it would cause Ron Swanson and spongebob to hang up their aprons in defeat. It’s simple, cheap, and delicious. They also have incredible chili, but that is not what I am here for. It’s all... about... the burger. Double cheeseburger with only ketchup.
Other honorable mentions include the southwest chimichanga from el burrito, any pizza from pizza in Paris, and the champagne chicken and risotto from blue cow.
I ended up sitting at a table that we would end up in regularly together. Thankfully the bar is filled with locals full of lively conversation to keep me distracted. There’s a woman regaling the bar with her latest horror stories from working with children. Apparently she was drawing with a kid when he suddenly lunged towards her foot with a sharpened pencil. I cannot help but listen in with great interest.
As Piano Man comes on over the bar speakers, I am immediately reminded of our road trip routine where we would force ourselves to learn one new song that we had great difficulty. This was one of our songs. Others included benny and the jets, no diggity, my numerous attempts at Rap God, and many many more. This song is an easy crowd pleaser in any bar or karaoke night in any city. You can’t help but sing or sway to the music.
I absolutely love walking in this town. There are so many hidden joys here. After a half-mile hike almost straight uphill, there’s a gorgeous overview of the river from a place called “Clay’s Cliff”. It seems since I was here last, the river as shrunk in size, making the view slightly less impressive. Still, it’s a gorgeous overlook that pictures couldn’t quite capture.
One Summer night after Katie and I had visited the local college hole in the wall, we asked the bartender what we should do if we were looking for an adventure. Cryptically, he responded “Find the Tree of Life”. If you are lucky enough to find it, The Tree of Life is an elaborate bit more f art underneath a bridge in town. It stretches roughly 30 feet high at a 45 degree angle and has provided bored college kids with improvised adventures for many years and hopefully many more to come. On hot summer days we would find ourselves tubing down the river (rapids get painful). We must have passed by this mural a dozen times without ever even knowing it. Given the nature of this mural, it is almost impossible to get a decent photo of.
At the base of the tree of life, there is a parking lot, a few tennis courts, and a playground reminiscent of Kid’s Cove. Just beyond that is a small riverbed that we used to go swimming in on hot summer days. In one of my favorite memories, we had been walking around town all day. We were dripping with perspiration as I slowly convinced her that we should head down to the river and dip our feet in. We were both in jeans and t-shirts, so she insisted swimming was not an option. We must have stood for about a minute before deciding that we would likely dry off before we even got home. We jumped in and couldn’t help but laugh giddily as we splashed about, trying and failing to fight the current every step of the way. I walked down to the bank and spread a small amount of ashes and a good amount of tears.
I visit this beloved area with great sorrow. While happy memories are flooding in, there is not a piece of this city that we did not set foot in together. Every block was walked, every store was shopped at together, and every moment here is a moment that I would not trade for any other.
Passing by our old apartments was a thing of great sadness. I cannot help but wonder... Is this where she was exposed to asbestos? Is there some poor college student struggling to keep their grades up who will succumb to the same fate a few short years after graduation? Quickly I remind myself that exposure generally takes decades and that this loss was a thing of freak occurrence. As much as I want some answer as to how this all happened, I can find know rational reason here. An arm and a leg seems a small price to pay to be able to walk through our front door and see her cuddled up with our dog and cat just one more time.
3: Grand Rapids
Something about this city always makes me feel uneasy, though I cannot say what. There are those who love this place, but whether it’s the constantly uneven floors or the fact that most neighborhoods look like they were built 50 years ago out of the bones of buildings that are well over 100 years old. I would argue that it’s one redeeming quality is that there is a plethora of beautiful woodwork in many areas.
4: Chicago
At 5 I stared in complete awe at skyscrapers so tall that you could not see the tops of them. Today, I have no lost that sense of bewilderment and excitement. At 24, Katie and I went to Lollapalooza and it reaffirmed my love with this magical concrete utopia for life. I could explore this city for a thousand years and never grow tired of it. This place is the stuff magic is made of. I cannot fully explain it, but wonderful, impossible things happen when I am here. People are at once, completely disinterested in your existence and completely genuine in interactions. There’s a bluntness in attitude here that I have always loved. You’re not being pandered to and you always know where you stand.
Some may argue that it’s dangerous, overpopulated, smelly at times, dirty, and just too much to drive in. Yes... it is... and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love the noise. I love the sound of the L crossing each individual set of tracks with the sound of a roller coaster. I love the cars slowly driving by my bedroom. At night they sound like waves crashing on the shore. I even love the patches of stinkiness that remind me that I don’t have to eat just because I walked past a deep dish spot that is pumping some serious fans to carry the scent of freshly made tomato sauce straight into my nostrils. I love that there are people who take the time to create a custom drum set out of spare paint cans only to play them all night for spare change. I didn’t even mind driving in all that much. However... it is dangerous in some areas. As a precaution, I stick to the main roads and take public transportation when the sun goes down.
While I am entirely melancholy to visit here without her, the city will never lose its charm to me. I believe that this will be my last stop to a location that we visited together and I wanted to spend at least 2 nights here before heading to my next stop.
Every street corner has an opportunity for adventure. Every bus stop is a window of convenience. Every restaurant is filled with scents that will draw you in whether you’re hungry or not. Bad restaurants just don’t exist in Chicago. They simply won’t allow it. I think there’s a city ordinance against it. I have no idea how places like McDonald’s stay in business in this town.
As I pulled into my Airbnb, I immediately realized that I had gained an hour to experience every inch I could reach on foot. I quickly hit the street and trusted my senses. Ears and a nose is all you need to fall in love with this place. Follow the music and find your way, it will never lead you wrong. I walked out to the street after bringing my belongings up to my room, closed my eyes, and could hear what sounded like incredible music pumping through an amplifier off in the distance. Just a few blocks away there was blues/funk group in the street that I immediately fell in love with. I wandered onto the street and asked someone who looked official what this was. The show was free, offered as entertainment for those who lived in the building across to the venue, complete with free hot dogs and free beer. After making sure it was alright that I take part, I sat for around 2 hours, enjoyed my free hot dog and beer. Thankfully they had overstocked the venue and had planned to throw everything out at the end of the night.
After leaving, I felt my stomach grumbling. While the hot dog was delicious, it didn’t quite fill me up. I punched in restaurants near me and was off in search of the next stop. After walking past the windows, one caught my eye. I looked it up and discovered that it was a new taco spot in the area with 5 stars that was as cheap as McDonald’s. Done. Sold. Shut up and take my money.
I was pleased immediately upon entering the establishment to discover the beautiful aroma that only comes from slow cooking happiness all day long only for me to cram it into my gullet with the intensity of a man who has spent the last 20 years in prison. Upon ordering, the cashier asked if I wanted cilantro and onion or tomato and lettuce. For reasons I cannot fully explain, this raised an immediate feeling of confidence in my decision to eat here. I went for the cilantro and onion and sat down to charge my phone.
As a fan of spicy food, I generally expect to ask for extra peppers or some hot sauce. They provided me with an unbelievable handmade spicy guacamole sauce and an absolutely spectacular habanero sauce. I added both to my tacos and proceeded to sniffle as I did everything but lick the plate. Surprisingly, the tacos came with a generous side of steak fries. Unsurprisingly, they were incredible and meant to be dipped in the two sauces as well. Absolutely fantastic.
I decided that I had not had my fill of blues, so I started my 2 mile walk to find a little blues club (the fact that little blues clues is not the name of a blues bar seems like a real missed opportunity). Unfortunately, after my trek I was disappointed to find that the bar had been shut down due to COVID and had to settle on having a beer at the Irish pub next door. After one, I quickly felt bloated from a
Day 2: I always run into this problem while I am in Chicago. I never want to leave this place. I’ve never spent so little on a vacation for such an amazing time. I wake around 8 AM and decide to head to the cafe down the road, as recommended by my Airbnb host. A club sandwich with a cup of chili later and I’m fueled up for the day to come. I immediately feel I am becoming jaded with the food in this city as I find myself thinking “the homemade bread is really good and the turkey and bacon are perfect, but it’s a little dry. The chili is only fantastic and not perfect, so... I don’t know, maybe 3 stars?”
I grab a train ticket for 2.50$ and head for the blue line to get a little closer to what I have decided will be my destination for this evening, shedd aquarium. Before the train even pulls in you can hear the rumble of what sounds like a jet engine ready for t so akeoff. You can feel the vibrations under your seat. Whether it’s your train or just another disappointment heading in the opposite direction remains to be seen, but it is enough to fill you with antici... pation for the journey ahead of you.
I decided to make a pit stop at millennial park and sit for a bit while I walked about. I’m looking at crown fountain, an electronic collage of 1,000 citizens of Chicago. Between the teeth of each individual there is a spout of water that shoots out, giving children of the area a while place to play and cool off. Due to COVID, the spout of water is off and it is relatively empty. Across from the fountain rests a small set of benches that are brilliantly designed to allow for privacy between benches. 2 large plants rest on either side of your seat, encasing you in a quiet, shadowy and surprisingly comfortable spot. Overhead, there is an elaborate net supporting dyed bits of glass that look like giant chunks of rock candy. There are 2 people next to me who brought a picnic. I have no reason to talk to them, but I wish there was a socially acceptable way of congratulating them on making a truly awesome afternoon for themselves. Sometimes people should know when they’ve nailed it at living, but for fear of looking like a crazy person, I shall abstain and move on.
I will never cease to be in awe of the magnitude of this city.
As I’m walking towards Shedd, I spot the Art Institute of Chicago. I quickly check the price and closing time of each. Shedd is 35$ and the institute is significantly less. Shedd closes in 4 hours, the institute closes in 8. Since I have to fill my days, but still have to succumb to a budget, I choose to go to the Art Institute. I take time in places like this to memorize each individual piece as best as I can. After 2 hours of aimlessly walking through sculptures, pottery, and beautiful murals from around the world, I happen upon something odd. About 4 dozen miniature houses. The pictures won’t capture how incredibly elaborate each of these are. While up close to the glass, you can almost convince yourself that you’re in the room. I cannot fathom the level of ocd that one would need to create something like this.
I wandered about for a bit until I stumbled upon the impressionist section. With great intrigue I spent at least 2 hours perusing the great impressionists from the last century. I must have spent a solid 30 minutes in awe of sunday afternoon on la grande jatte. It’s a bizarre thing to see up close. Your brain recognizes the images but makes very little logical sense out of the way that the colors are entirely blended together to create a whole image. It shouldn’t make sense, but it does. I couldn’t help but make a Ferris Bueller reference to a security guard. The guard was confused entirely and had never heard of the movie. I told her that it was a teen movie from the 80s where they skip school and visit the museum (when you say it out loud, it doesn’t sound great). With a blank stare and a shrug she replied “I imagine a lot of movies were filmed here”. I continued onto the Monet exhibit and left, sore and exhausted.
After around 5 hours, I contented myself to check out “sunday afternoon on la grande jatte” once more and to head out. It blew my mind at an equal level at the second viewing. I quickly felt a grumble in my stomach and decided that it was time for the last stretch of my culinary experiences for the night. With great excitement I headed to Lou Malnatis, ordered a personal pan deep dish with lots of meat and awaited like a giddy school child. For those of you who would argue that Chicago style pizza is essentially a tomato soup filled with meat, the door is open, you can leave. It may be saucy, but I don’t even need the pizza. Hand me a ladle and I’ll happily figure it out. I won’t even complain. I might even tip extra. While your complaints about Chicago style are entirely valid, I frankly do not care. It’s flawless pizza. I sit and plan my next steps as I wait for my pizza.
Feeling that I missed out on my night of music, I find myself on a bus heading for a free of admission jazz club. What would have been at least a 45 minute walk has quickly turned into a 10 minute ride on the bus for the phenomenal cost of 2 dollars and 50 cents.
By a small miscalculation, I find that the live music doesn’t start for another 2 hours. I see a gorgeous walk on the river roughly 2 blocks away and decide to bide my time there until it’s time for jazz.
This place is a madhouse. There is a small vineyard in the area that is entirely packed. A worker asks if I’m a bit wine drinker and mention that I used to work in a vineyard. They offer me a free tasting and I am quickly surprised to learn that 80% of the wines that they have are... well... just ok. Even by small town standards, this place is lacking. Their Pinot noir is excellent, but for me finding a good Pinot noir is like a fly finding good garbage.
Now it’s time for jazz. I have been told that this group is fantastic at the door by several patrons. Now I’m excited.
There is a relatively normal and decent looking man my age sitting at the bar who is aggressively talking to himself as though he is a lawyer preparing for an argument with a judge. Were he not so well dressed, I would assume he was insane. So far it looks as though he expects the argument to go poorly, but I cannot summon the courage to ask if he’s doing alright. Katie would have asked, but sadly it seems that certain interactions with strangers are less jarring to the strangers when you are with another person. It’s an odd trend that I’ve happened to notice since she has passed. Certain interactions that I had become accustomed to between me and strangers have become foreign and awkward.
The man has resided himself to staring at his phone for the last hour. I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about this band, but they are absolutely fantastic. The man on cello is providing a mellow background while the man on piano’s fingers are currently dancing throughout the keys as though he had lit them on fire before hand. I cannot see the stage from my seat, so perhaps he has. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t put their songs on my phone, unless it was to make the coolest ringtone ever, but I can certainly appreciate the profound amount of talent that this group has.
I’m catching yet another bus home with a profound feeling of sadness. I do not want to leave this city, but leave it I must. I cannot fathom a place that I would love more than this, but this trip is not about my own personal enjoyment. This is about honoring my other half. There’s too much of the country left and too little that Katie was able to see in her lifetime, so I will push on towards another destination. This time I made it out until 11! I must be feeling younger!
To those of you who have never experienced this city, I strongly, STRONGLY recommend that you make time to make it a priority. The world is vast and this destination isn’t even that far from most of you. In driving I have come to learn, if you have the time, you can make it anywhere.
Day 3: Chicago
It has dawned on me that technically, I can leave my car on the street as long as I want. Upon this realization, I start my walk to the bus stop that will take me back to millennium park. Immediately upon entering the bus my stomach begins to growl so aggressively that the woman next to me gives me a concerned look and I decide to pick up a bite to eat before heading to scatter some of her ashes. About 1.5 miles away from millennium park is an excellent smoke house reminiscent of a scene from Harry Potter. I walk there and I sit down to order an absolutely fantastic bit of smoked brisket with a side of corn. Absolutely incredible and extremely filling. I would be surprised if I eat anything else today.
As I pause for a moment after filling up on food, I cannot help but become a little depressed. I’m in my favorite place in the world and I just wish she were here with me. What is life without someone to share in every moment? Someone who knows what you mean without explanation. Someone who is able to laugh at all your silly little inside jokes. Someone to wake up with.
Some moments are harder than others, but some moments are incredibly overwhelming in ways that cannot be fully understood outside of going through a profound loss yourself. Suffice to say, if I seem down, I am only able to articulate the tip of the iceberg.
I sit down on my little stoop and take some time to miss her before scattering her ashes in the area behind me and begin heading back to my car for my next journey.
5: Detroit
There is something about waking up to the pitter patter of toddlers that brings me to extreme levels of joy. They don’t know that it’s still early and that I haven’t had my coffee and they don’t care. They have no hesitancy in sprinting past me. The level of energy quickly becomes contagious as I find myself alternating between lethargy and a second-hand toddler high. I take 2 days to recover from my time in Chicago, visit with loved ones, and hit the road headed down to Hocking Hills, OH.
6: Hocking hills, OH
Day 1: The first thing I notice that is unique to Ohio is that on many highways, in lieu of a ramp there are plain roads that allow you to turn directly onto the highway. There are signs that would generally signify a 4 way stop all along the highway. While it is an extremely efficient way to quickly accelerate to your destination, it is also terrifying to consider that at any moment someone may turn out in front of you. In time, I come to learn that this does not seem to be an actual concern. It seems like a system that should have been snuffed out at it’s conception for the sake of safety, but it is surprisingly unconcerning as time goes on.
I arrived between 10-11 PM. In 30 minutes I had set my tent up and taken the most lovely shower. The chilly nights up north are entirely non existent here as I become determined that I should sleep on top of my sleeping bag rather than inside it. I think I’m getting better at all this. I crawl inside, feeling both relieved and accomplished, but not quite ready to fall asleep. I prop up my phone and begin watching Ratchet, the new prequel to One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. After less than an episode, I am out like a light.
Hocking hills day 2:
I head for breakfast and head to cantwell cliffs in search of some good hiking. As I drive the short 20 miles, it occurs to me that the weather is absolutely flawless. It’s not too cold and not too hot. It’s exactly the temperature that you want the water to be when you dive head first into a lake. There’s a gentle breeze in the air that carries the natural smell of moss and trees in the area. While I generally need a Zyrtec this time of year due to my allergy to specific types of trees/grass, I am delighted to realize that this area is filled with Hemlock trees and that to the best of my knowledge, I have no allergic reaction to these. I kept expecting my lungs to start wheezing and for my nose to start running, but it never happens.
It’s been less than a mile, but it feels like 20. Straight downhill and straight back up. The steps are made of stone, they are uneven, broken in some places, and look as though they have been carved into the trail itself. Between the constant pulse of my heartbeat that feels like a bass drum throughout my body and the taste of iron on my tongue, I fear that if I continue at this rate, my heart may just pop. Towards the end, I looked out to an open forest when a strong breeze blew, creating a steady stream of falling leaves as though I were living inside of a snow globe that had just begun to settle. I deeply wish I could video it for longer and turn it into a screensaver, but my phone is nearly dead and needs time to charge. As I’m pausing up, I see a large group of individuals my size who are tackling this hike with what looks like ease. I furrow my brow and determine that they are my new competition. With great difficulty, I made it all the way, well in front of my new unknown advisories. As I reach the parking lot, I hear one of the guys say “wow, it only took us 3 hours this time.” I quickly realize that I have been competing against individuals out of some childish schoolyard mentality and that they had started the trail 2 full hours ahead of me. In my defense, I had won the race that they did not know they were competing in. Drenched in sweat, I head back to the car to search for a good spot for waterfalls.
Due to the extreme level of vegetation, there were few opportunities to take photos or videos on this hike.

2020.09.28 20:40 Holiday-Inn-Cambodia A Top 10 list with a twist: I actually write something about each one

So, don't take this the wrong way, but I'm getting a little tired of all the top-10 lists where you just say which albums you like. It's great that you love the albums and all, and I love that there is clear enthusiasm there somewhere, but doesn't only listing the albums get a little pedestrian? Why don't we discuss the albums a little more? So with that in mind, here is my top 10 with something of a reason why for each one. Feel free to skip over the ones you don't care about and only comment on the ones you love, or to read the whole thing, or to ignore it all because it's too long and you're busy.
Because I can't actually organize them properly into relative greatness, the list is split up like so: the top 4 in no particular order, then the rest, all only very roughly ranked from best to worst.

HERE WE GO:
1. Blood on the Tracks
This was the second Bob Dylan album I ever listened to front to back (the first being Freewheelin'). This is the first Bob Dylan album where I realized that there is beauty in every song. Younger me used to put on a particular album because I was just looking for the singles, and the rest was just filler (even when it was good). So naturally I gravitated towards Blowin' in the Wind first. But when I read how well regarded this album was I decided to give it a shot. The first track just blows you away and there isn't a single low point beyond. It's got the most pathos of any of his albums in my opinion. You can feel that it's really about him, unlike some of his more obscure or intangible songs. It's simply beautiful top to bottom.
2. Bringing it All Back Home
The entire album is full of great songs, from the political to the personal to the mystical, with maybe only 1 filler track and that's debatable. Mr. Tambourine Man is full of lyrical tricks and playful rhymes and it's incredibly evocative. Subterranean is full of the same but with a more political bent. And It's Alright Ma, I'm Only Bleeding is one of the most evocative and brilliant songs he ever wrote. Whereas Blood on the Tracks makes you feel and cry, this one makes you think and get angry, but in just as powerful a way.
3. Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
Besides the fact that it also contains a couple of the best songs he ever made in Blowin' in the Wind and A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall, this album is so great that I actually tend to forget how many great songs are on it. Every time I put it on I just can't believe, one after the other another little piece of genius. His voice is young, and soft, clear, and cuts through you like a dagger. It has a couple of low points but they're not that low, and the rest is like an announcement to the world: I'm a force to be reckoned with.
4. Blonde on Blonde:
It took me longer to get into this album than some others. Like I mentioned before, at first I was just looking for the singles: Rainy Day and I Want You namely, and then also Stuck Inside of Mobile which was referenced in Fear and Loathing (the movie at least). It took me some time to get beyond that to really dig the album, and I realized there are a couple of songs I don't love so it feels a little overlong in the second half, but it's also got Visions of Johanna a sublimely sweet song and it closes with a soft bang (in a good way) in Sad Eyed Lady.

THE REST:
5. Highway 61 Revisited
I love this album, and Like a Rolling Stone is possibly the greatest rock song of all time tied with Stairway and maybe Won't Get Fooled Again (so shoot me if that's not hip, but it's true to me). I don't absolutely love any of the other songs, though I like them for sure. I find Ballad of a Thin Man a little mean-spirited as great as it is, but that's just my empathy. This album surely deserves to go at the top of any list but it's not quite there for me.
6. Oh Mercy
I was absolutely surprised by this album. I didn't think anything Dylan did in the 80s could have been considered "great" but then I put this on and I was like... yeah I was wrong. It's a weird one because of where it falls in between so many other meh-to-middling albums, but the fact is that it starts off with a bang, it's got great hooks, and not a single track feels wasted. I love the airy tropical feel of the guitar in Most of the Time. I love the dark almost apocalyptic feel of The Man in the Long Black Coat. The only downside to me is that the second side is a little slow, but it's minor.
7. Time out of Mind
I bought this one on CD not too long after it came out, and I thought to myself it can't be that great. Sure it is selling well and it has all these accolades, but Dylan is from the 60s, it just won't sound contemporary. Oh damn was I wrong. It starts out haunting and just gets better from there. Especially because of the first track it feels like it has a darkness in it, like it's describing a bleak landscape or a man facing death. I'm a sucker for that, being not always the most optimistic person. Then it's also filled with interesting sounds and hooks even on the boppier tracks.
8. Tempest
This is a personal favorite. It gets my goat when people say it isn't that good. The production is some of the best he ever had, starting with with the opening track. When the full band comes in, you can tell every instrument is working in harmony and it has this killer baseline. Again I don't see a single wasted track on this one. People might not like the title track, but I think it's great - it's like a man singing a folk story about one of the most famous disasters of our time. And the final track, well it's just beautiful. I've loved the Beatles longer (if not more) than I have Dylan, and it's wonderful to hear his tribute to his old contemporary John. And it's just like him to do it 30 years after he died.
9. Love and Theft
I don't have a lot to say about this album. I love it, but not quite as much as Tempest. It starts out with another great banger with a hook, a song with some real energy. Mississippi I didn't like the first few times until I heard the alternate versions, and then I started to get it. By the time the last track rolls around, I find myself empty, sad that the album is over. Until I immediately put it on again, lol.
10. Infidels
I enjoy this album a lot, mainly on the strength of Jokerman which is one of my favorite songs of his. There are some low points later but overall the songs are full of an energy and incisiveness that some of his other albums of the period simply lack. And I love Dire Straits.

2020.09.28 20:40 RomanReignsDaBigDawg Joke by RM is the most impressive rapping I’ve ever heard from an idol

This song is too underrated and deserves to be regarded as arguably the best hip-hop track an idol has ever released. The entire song is RM responding to the K-hip hop community criticizing him for not being a technical rapper and he responds by showing off multiple rhyme schemes. I know it’s lyrically meaningless, but the entire thing is just satisfying as hell to listen to.
Technically, RM is the best rapper in K-pop and I don’t think it’s particularly close. In Joke he switched up his flow and rhyme schemes every two to four bars. It’s something I’ve never really seen from an idol before and I believe he’s in a league of his own technique wise. I know Agust D and 1 Verse are huge fan favourites but Joke is the best solo song released from the rap line.
On a side note, I’d like to give a special shout-out to Do You, another solo track released by RM, which I love just as much as Joke. I like that he’s experimenting with different styles, and Mono was a great calm mixtape but I wish he could go all out like he did in 2015 so he can prove why he’s the best rapper in K-pop.

2020.09.28 20:36 Lostkingsoul 21 [M4F] Do you wanna be the most beautiful thing that has ever happened to me?

I'm looking for a connection with someone with whom I could spend my whole life with and talk about everything. Someone who becomes the cool breeze to calm this lonely heart. Someone who not just becomes my epic love but also the one that makes me feel lucky everyday to have her in my life.
Someone I could write Poems about, dedicate my songs to. Someone I could laugh with, share my Jokes with, talk about our lives and be each others strength throughout everything, someone I could take on beautiful dates and watch the beautiful sunrise and sunset every day and night as she puts her head on my shoulder and I put my head on hers.
To praise the beauty in her soul, kindness and amazing attributes it might take a thousand more days and this paragraph might go on but to make it short. I want her to know that I'm out there looking for her, all I wanna say is that whoever gets you will be the most luckiest man in the whole universe and I just want you to be happy wherever you are and whoever you choose to be with!
I love reading and writing Stories and Poetry, Going to the Gym, Composing-Writing-Singing my own Songs, my own Humor to keep me laughing and giggling always at times I need it. To be honest I'm a Rockstar! But in my dreams lol
Many of us dream of having someone in their life who would like them for who they are, be there in their good and bad times, someone who loves them so deeply as if there's nobody in this world besides them. Many of us dream of loving that person so badly as if there's nobody in this world besides them we can call our own. Someone we can call family. Someone we can call our everything.
I always had this dream for long that I find someone I would fall for who would become the air to my lungs like the fresh air in a beautiful garden at 9AM, like the warmth from the heat of the sun, like the cool breeze of the winters, someone that becomes my everything, my one and only, my family. The one that I could look at at that look just calms me within with the thought that she exists. Someone I could spend some happy moments with, joke around with my jokes, be there for her in her good and bad times while she remains there for me everytime like the fireside. Someone whom I could look at and say I love her forever and ever.
Someone I can take on a beautiful date, get on one knee and ask her hand.
We get married, go on vacations together to beautiful places holding hands, talking beautifully looking into each others eyes and getting lost within the deep ocean within them as if there's just the two of us.
Someone with whom every day and night is blissful. Someone with whom spending time is like being in heaven. Whose happiness becomes my goal to be there when she achieves her dreams and climbs the heights of success and when she feels down be her fireside. Someone who becomes the mother to my kids blessing me with the most beautiful joy of my life, the kid that loves me to death. The one that waits for me everyday to comeback and hold him and play with him. The kid who likes to go out and eat his favourite food together with his parents, his parents still very much in love, love their kid so much unlike his father's parents who never loved him enough. All of his siblings get equally treated with much love and care and none of them feel that our love for them is biased. We adopt a child and save him from the painful life that an orphan child lives thinking how his life would've been if his parents existed. We adopt him and raise him as our own never letting him ever feel that he doesn't have parents or we aren't his parents. If god blesses me enough, I will adopt as many as I could to give them a better life. Our kids never get the treatment my parents gave me. I try to give them all the happiness I can afford.
I grow old. Me and my wife wave at our kid going to prom as we smile at him being too excited for it. A few years later I'm blessed with a grandchild as I look on with my wife holding her hand kissing her hand as I sit on the sofa and see my grandchild playing and I look at my wife saying "Thankyou for coming into my life!"
As years pass by, I play with my grandchild, teach him important lessons in life and tell him the story of my life when he asks and take him on adventures. Grandpa is still strong.
Few years down by I hold my Great Grandchild and smile as everybody smile looking at me being too happy about it.
Some time later, my time arrives. I'm on my deathbed as my wife holds my hand. My family is by my side and my wife looks on at me and says "You did it Faraz. You made it through. You did it!"
I cry with tears of joy in my eyes that I lived for so long to witness such happiness and love in my life and got through everything in life. I die with a smile on my face knowing that i made it through
I'm lowered six feet beneath the ground where I'm laid to rest.
While as a soul I wait for my family, for us all to reunite and talk about everything in the next world someday about everything all of us did in our lifetimes.
I'm a Spiritual guy with an Arabian ancestry and Indian Nationality by birth. I grew up in Saudi Arabia. Currently in my Final year at the University pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Business and Commerce about to set off to anywhere in the world next year as soon as I graduate.

2020.09.28 20:33 beribimba Best Bootlegs of Each Era?

Looking for the "best" bootlegs (or professional live recordings) of each Pumpkins era (in terms of sound quality, performance, setlist, etc.).
So far I love:
Spaceboys (1993, various) for the acoustic Siamese Dream versions they were playing radio stations (plus the awesome Dancing in the Moonlight cover of Thin Lizzy): http://www.spfc.org/songs-releases/boot.html?boot_id=96
Manchester (Sep. 15, 1993) for Rock Invasion tour: http://www.spfc.org/tours/date.html?tour_id=227
Hamburg (May 14, 1998) for Adore era (don't know which version I have, exactly): http://www.spfc.org/tours/date.html?tour_id=610
Oceania Live in NYC official release
So I'm hoping for great shows from Gish, MCIS, Machina, and later stuff. I would welcome recommendations, because there is just so much out there now.

2020.09.28 20:28 SilentFoxProductions Thank you

A couple days ago, I lost a really close friend of mine. And he loved My Chemical Romance. I personally didn't care much for the music, but after he left, hearing some songs kind of...made me feel like he was still there. By my side. I'm an emotional wreck right now but I wanted to say thank you. Because now I feel like he's still there. And that means a lot to me. Have a good day or night.

2020.09.28 20:24 Murderofmurkrows So apparently egg me knew more subconsciously then I realized.

So I was listening to some music that I haven't since egg times. And unravel(from tokyo ghoul) came on and the lyrics couldn't have been more spot on. About a month or two before I cracked I really loved the song and didn't know why. It baffles me that I hadn't made the connection before now. Has anyone had any similar experiences?

2020.09.28 20:23 acstitch 25/est/pc - let’s game and watch stuff!

hi! i’m a twenty-five year old from the us, more specifically the east coast. i’m an infj to the core; if there’s something i fail to mention, it‘s described perfectly by myers-briggs. i put my all into everything i do, though that has bitten me in the ass more than i’d like to admit. will i continue doing it? absolutely.
i love animals. i’ve had pets ranging from puppies and kittens to fish and hedgehogs. i’m a dog person, but my cat changed my view of felines in general. i’ll send you photos of my dogs and cat, but only if you promise to do the same! free pass if you don’t have any, but i might make you send me cute tiktoks to compensate.
i’ve found that music is therapeutic for me. what’s on repeat for me? joji’s new album nectar. if you’ve listened to it, what’s your favorite song? if you haven’t listened to it....why!?
i enjoy gaming. i typically stick to 1-3 games at a time, but i’ll play something else if prompted. at the moment, valorant and dead by daylight are my favorites... as well as animal crossing when i’m relaxing in bed. if you have any terraforming tips, please help. i’m lost out here haha
i’d love to find someone that i can watch shows and movies with. perhaps we could binge watch halloween movies given the fact that it’s spooky szn? if horror isn’t your thing, i’m open to other genres as well!
above all, i’d like to meet likeminded people that i can form meaningful connections with. if you feel like we’d get along based upon what i’ve written, shoot me a chat or a message!

2020.09.28 20:19 Ghostsound2 Radiohead Discography Overview (Long and maybe controversial)

Disclaimer: After being interested in Radiohead's discography for a while, but never going deeper than OK Computer,I finally gave it a shot and now am ready to share my opinions about all the albums they put out. As a fairly new fan,my opinion can vary drastically from yours,so if you disagree with anything here, you can write it in the comments,I am always a fan of a friendly discussion)
Pablo Honey (1993)
I think this album gets too much of a bad reputation in the present day. While it isn't as important as other albums after that,it still shows that the band had a lot of talent even from the very start. The album starts and ends very strong with You and Blow Out and Creep is an awesome song regardless of the shadow it casted on the band after that. Other songs like Stop Whispering,Thinking About You or Vegetable even show early shades of The Bends materialising. The main problem of the album is that the songs sound too similar to other 90s alternative rock bands coming out at the time, but it's hard to put the blame on the band considering that it was their first album. At the end of the day,the only true crime of the album is being unexceptional.
Ranking:5/10
Favourite Song:Creep
Least Favourite Song:How Do You?
The Bends (1995)
Now this album is there Radiohead truly came into their own. The album has a more open sound than Pablo Honey and acoustic guitar starts to often take center stage in creating the rhythm, while electric guitar builds on it. Songwriting took a leap forward, with High And Dry,Fake Plastic Trees and Street Spirit being both fairly accessible and incredibly constructed songs that would highlight any discography. Lyrics also took a move forward, going away from extremely personal lyrics of Pablo Honey to more abstract and universal themes. Not every song is as memorable as others, but overall this is a very enjoyable and catchy album.
Ranking:7.5/10
Favourite Song: High And Dry
Least Favourite Song: Bones
OK Computer (1997)
It's really hard to talk about this album. It's regarded as one of the most important albums of the 90s and is often placed high on Best Albums Ever lists. Alternative rock nowadays can't even be imagined without this album's influence. So after all these years of praise, does this album hold up?
Yes. Hell yes.
This album is phenomenal. While The Bends sounded warm,OK Computer has a more cold and melancholic sound, definitely helped by the impeccable mixing. Songs are strong as ever with most of the record being essentially greatest hits. Despite this album being close to perfection,I personally think that Electioneering is a great song that doesn't exactly fit the mood of the record and The Tourist isn't as strong of a closer as it should have been. Regardless,in my opinion this album deserves all the praise it gets.
Ranking:9.5/10
Favourite Song: Paranoid Android
Least Favourite Song:Filter Happier
Kid A (2000)
How can a band follow up such an important album as OK Computer? By changing creative trajectory completely and making an album full of electronic elements. I understand, why the album was met with confusion at best upon its initial release, but I find that this transformation was pretty successful on their part. The band returns to expansive sound they had on The Bends, but infusing it with coldness of OK Computer, creating icy and desolate atmosphere in the process. Tracks have become more ambient in their approach, going for quiter rise in tension and hypnotizing rhythms.
I will confess,Kid A and Treefingers are close to filler in my opinion and I was never a big fan of Idioteque, but other songs are so great that I come back to this album quite often.
Ranking:8.5/10
Favourite Song: How To Disappear Completely
Least Favourite Song:Treefingers
Amnesiac (2001)
This album was recorded in same sessions as Kid A,but you won't even know it by just listening to it. While Kid A was expansive,Amnesiac is more closed up,even claustrophobic in places. The song arrangements sound more lively and immediate, which makes sense considering that a lot of songs were recorded by the band playing together again. Life In A Glasshouse deserves its own mention, being an experimental track featuring a jazz trumpeter brilliantly improvising on top of the piano arrangement. While I won't say that album reaches the heights of Kid A,it is a consistently great effort and deserves to be viewed outside of its big brother's shadow.
Rating:8/10
Favourite Song: Life In A Glasshouse
Least Favourite Song: Hunting Bears
Hail To The Thief (2003)
I have another confession to make: I thoroughly enjoy this album. It marries the immediacy and energy of their rock side and mood building and experiments of their electronic side in a brilliant way. This marriage is at its best in the opening track "2+2=5",which starts with a minimal and cold melody before exploding into raging rocker. Tracks like Go To Sleep,There There and Myxomatosis show that their approach to rock has matured and became more suited to their new approach, while Backdrifts and The Gloaming remind you that electronic stuff isn't exactly out of the window. My only complaint is that We Suck Young Blood doesn't do anything for me and The Gloaming's mix should have been closer to live mix, where Thom's voice takes a center stage instead of being buried behind the electronic rhythm, but over than that the album is incredible.
Rating: 9/10
Favourite Song: 2+2=5
Least Favourite Song: We Suck Young Blood
In Rainbows (2007)
I adore this album, this is the only way I can describe my opinion about it. It is the only album by Radiohead that sounds warm and comforting and thus has some of the most beautiful songs they ever recorded. It continues the mix of electronic and organic instruments that was introduced on Hail To The Thief and arguably does it better. The perfect combination of drum rhythms and guitars on 15 Step,Weird Fishes and Jigsaw Falling Into Piece is simply breathtaking, the fuzzed out rock of Bodysnatchers is undeniable,Nude,All I Need and Videotape are incredibly beautiful,Faust Arp,Reckoner and House Of Cards are chill and inviting... As you can tell,I love every song on the album. For me,this is the perfect combination of every element of Radiohead mixed into one uplifting record.
Ranking:10/10
Favourite Song:Jigsaw Falling Into Place
Least Favourite Song: All I Need (it was very hard, but I needed to)
The King Of Limbs (2011)
It was surprisingly pretty good. For an album built entirely on loops, this album is a lot more relaxed and enjoyable than I expected. I will admit, songs like Bloom and Feral sound too overcrowded with different loops to be enjoyable, but other songs on the album are either energetic and danceable or calm and moody. I would personally put Supercollider as an album opener instead of Bloom and Staircase instead of Feral to make this album incredible, but in its intended form this album is pretty good, even though it isn't as universally enjoyable as their other efforts.
Rating:7,5/10
Favourite Song:Little By Little
Least Favourite Song: Bloom
Moon Shaped Pool (2016)
After a couple of records of Radiohead being more positive than usual, this album marks the return to more sparce and melancholic style of music, while still maintaining HTTT and IR approach. The thing that makes this album stand out is string arrangements that make the tracks sound more impactful and atmospheric. While I recognize the level of greatness in this album, it's not the album that I can see myself listening to very often, mostly it works for me only in specific situation and mood, otherwise it just washes over me leaving no impression.
Ranking:7/10
Favourite Song: Present Tense
Least Favourite Song:Glass Eyes
Let me say, after listening to all their albums,I gained a bigger respect for Radiohead. While I won't call them one of my favourite bands (although it can change with time),I recognize that it's hard to maintain that level of simultaneous experimentation and quality and Radiohead is one of the bands that can achieve this. If there will be a new Radiohead album in the future,I will surely check out, what they have up their sleeve.

2020.09.28 20:16 chelsenpai Honest opinion about Nectar.

I'm honestly disappointed. Not that it's a bad album, Afterthought's been playing through my speakers ever since the album got released, but I feel like there's not much really to look forward to. Four of the singles were released early before the album dropped. Other than the 4 singles that were released, Afterthought, Normal People, Ew, Like You Do are top-tier for sure. I appreciated Reanimator and Nitrous after a second listen. Tick tock, 777, Mr. Hollywood, High Hopes, Modus, they sounded like songs from his EP. I thought Joji would take this album and maybe steer it in the direction similar to Gimme Love. But, it seems like the moody, dark and experimental sounds he puts in his songs really are his signature.
This is not a hate piece about Joji by the way. I've been listening to his stuff during the Chloe Burbank days. I'm just curious if somebody else feels the same way.

2020.09.28 20:14 Ov3rh8ul Black Clover Ending 8 is underrated

So I was bored in class today and decided to listen to all Black Clover endings 1-12 since while watching the anime I skipped them. There were some meh one's and some really good one's (Ex: Ed 2 was good but Ed 11 wasn't my taste). However there was a certain ending that stood out to me which was ending 8. I believe it's called "against all gods". It's just so catchy. I love how the song starts off with that cool distorted mechanical voice and then goes to the main song which then leads to that creepy and sad silent part with the water drops while the woman is singing and then you get the male voice who starts rapping, like it's just sooo good. Honestly, after listening to all the endings I feel like they're all underrated, not just ed 8. Although the openings are fine as hell, there were some endings I liked more than some op's (Ed 2 and Ed 8 being the main one's).
