Is it true that Johnny's uncle is on the executive board on CBS? I thought it was a Twitter rumor, but I'm rethinking it after the family dates.

2020.09.28 17:31 sydneycitty Did I go to far? What do I do now?

Hey daddies... so I recently moved in with my boyfriend. I was on his phone deleting a video of myself giving him head bc I wanted to replace it with a better one. No harmful intent in my actions at all. But then he gets an instagram dm saying “Good Morning 😏”.
Obviously I had to click on it because that’s not what someone says on their first slide in and I had to see what was up. I’m greeted by an extensive page of dms with sexts and nudes that were exchanged between the two of them. I’m not one to really get mad about someone’s history and all of the conversation was before we starting officially dating. Except the most recent.
THIS BITCH BOY hit this girl up the day after I told my parents about the move and basically got disowned (which also happened to be the day before we signed our agreement with the homeowners).
So, while I was distraught and a little lost in a park smoking for 8 hours over my parents reaction. This man was awake at 9 AM sending dick pics to this girl and telling her how he’d fuck her.
So daddies that was the backstory. When I opened that dm conversation I responded to the girl as him saying “good morning” back and went on with my day, without executing the plan of making a new video of course. I figured he’d wake up to a reply from her and see that he didn’t send the message and freak the fuck out. NOPE. A day later and she didn’t respond yet. So my hurt and impatient self decided to be certain he caught on this time. While sleeping in again the next day, I took his phone, saved screenshots of his own convo with her to his camera roll and left the phone locked to open up to the dm conversation. I also got on his gaming computer and googled “is sending nudes cheating” and opened every single search result of the first 3 pages on a different tab. I then turned off the monitor so that they would stay open and he would see all of those tabs unexpectedly the next time he sits down to game today.
Lastly, I decided I didn’t wanna be there anxiously waiting to see his reaction. So I left. And....took his car keys with me. And turned my location off. I plan on coming back in about 8 hours and I don’t think it’s that harmful because he doesn’t work today and has no plans. However now I’m sitting here trying to study and for some reason feel anxious and guilty.
Was what I did too far? What do I do when I come home tonight??

2020.09.28 16:57 colourfulsevens New FIRE CANNOT KILL A DRAGON Excerpt: The Battle of Blackwater

From Vanity Fair: https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2020/09/game-of-thrones-book-excerpt-blackwater
It’s hard to remember now, but there was a time when Game of Thrones couldn’t afford to stage a battle. For all its groundbreaking, world-building ambition, the HBO fantasy drama’s 2011 debut season struggled to populate even modest crowd scenes on its $6 million-per-episode budget. Yet going into the show’s sophomore year, GoT producers were faced with the challenge of depicting one of saga author George R.R. Martin’s most colossal events: the Battle of the Blackwater, the climax of his second Song of Ice and Fire novel, A Clash of Kings.
Below is an exclusive excerpt from the new book Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon—an uncensored, behind-the-scenes account of the making of Thrones, from its earliest meetings to the airing of its series finale, by Entertainment Weekly editor-at-large James Hibberd. Here’s how the GoT team pulled off an episode that forever changed the series—and, arguably, television as well.
The first season of HBO’s Rome focused on two legendary military leaders, Julius Caesar and Pompey Magnus, and their journey from allies to warring enemies. Just before their climactic battle, Caesar, with familiar-sounding insight, declared, “We must win or we die.” What followed was a few seconds of blurry close-up images, such as a sword hitting a shield in slow motion. In the next scene, Caesar returned wearily to his tent. “Send to Rome,” he said. “Tell them Caesar won.” Then Caesar took a nap, exhausted from all his fighting we did not see.
Before Game of Thrones, the work-around used by Rome was pretty typical of how battles were shown on television—a lot of buildup, then perhaps some fragment of the larger conflict.
The climax of Martin’s A Clash of Kings, however, was precisely what the book’s title suggested: a monumental campaign, detailed across five chapters, where self-declared king Stannis Baratheon led an invasion of King’s Landing from the sea while Tyrion took charge of King Joffrey’s capital defenses. Like many of Martin’s conflicts, the battle was weighted so there were reasons to support both sides. You wanted Tyrion to prove himself as a leader and survive, but you also wanted the illegitimate and psychopathic King Joffrey to lose. Stannis wasn’t likable, but he admittedly had a rightful claim to the Iron Throne, and his armada included the ethical Davos Seaworth.
In Martin’s novel and the show, Tyrion set Stannis’s approaching ships aflame using a stash of napalm-like wildfire. But in the book, Tyrion also constructed this massive chain that was hoisted across Blackwater Bay so that when…well, let’s have Martin tell it.
“There’s a giant chain strung across the bay so Stannis can’t get away and they are trapped in the flames,” explained the author, his eyes excitedly alight. “Boats are slamming together and get locked together so they form a temporary bridge across the river. Stannis has a huge army on the south side of the river and he’s trying to get them across. So when the bridge of boats is formed, his men start rushing across. And the defenders have built three huge trebuchets flinging wildfire across at them. Then Joffrey starts flinging the bodies across the river of traitors who were planning to sell the city out…”
It was all supremely epic, highly complex, and precisely the sort of sequence that Martin thought was only possible to stage in a reader’s imagination.
Up until this point, Game of Thrones had avoided filming battles. But season one’s Battle of the Green Fork and Battle of the Whispering Wood had not been crucial to portray in the story. “Some battles work fine off-screen,” showrunner David Benioff said. “Season two was so much about a country at war, we felt like if we didn’t see the most important battle of this entire war onscreen, we were going to be shortchanging viewers.”
There was just one problem. Actually, there were many problems, but one particularly huge problem: There was no possible way to stage a major battle sequence with the show’s season two budget. The showrunners had also promised HBO their series didn’t need big wartime sequences and had even put that pledge in the public record. “It’s not a story with a million orcs charging across the plains,” Dan Weiss told the Hollywood Reporter in 2008. “The most expensive effects are creature effects, and there’s not much of that.”
“Not much”—except depicting thousands of ships on fire and armies clashing on sea and land in a sequence that would blow out the budget of a feature film, let alone a TV show.
Game of Thrones had reached a pivotal moment, and it was before the production was truly ready. The outcome of this challenge would define the series. The showrunners knew Blackwater was only the first of several increasingly massive spectacles in Martin’s books. Thrones was either going to continue as a character-driven drama with an occasional sword fight or direwolf, or it was going to evolve into a television-cinema hybrid unlike anything Hollywood had seen. At the time, an episode of Thrones was typically shot in about two weeks, but even a downsized version of Blackwater would need a minimum of three, plus additional funds for staging the on-the-ground action, extra cast, and special effects. The producers needed a multimillion-dollar stipend and, just as critical, to establish a clear precedent with the network and their fans that would make future battles not only possible, but expected. The Thrones team didn’t want Julius Caesar taking a nap.
Dan Weiss (showrunner): We were nervous, really nervous, going into the second season, about that episode. There was talk of turning Blackwater into a land battle, which would have been terrible.
David Benioff (showrunner): Or doing it off-screen.
Dan Weiss: “M’lord, have you heard? They’re at the bay!”
David Benioff: We went down on bended knee: “Just this once. Please.”
Dan Weiss: We begged and pleaded with Mike Lombardo. We were negotiating. We had a big conversation about how many boats could we do.
Michael Lombardo (former HBO programming president): The question was, could you have a sophisticated, grounded drama, [with] fantasy tropes, and have epic battles? Could you do it all?
After considerable back-and-forth, Lombardo agreed to give Thrones an additional $2 million to stage a version of the battle, which included an extra week of filming. But the battle was still unworkable on paper. The episode’s writer was Martin himself, so the author was tasked with the painful duty of downsizing his own vision while trying to maintain the fight’s most crucial aspects—to keep the horses and Stonehenge, so to speak.
George R.R. Martin (author, co-executive producer): We had to scale down Blackwater considerably from the book. They told me right at the start that the bridge of boats would be impossible.
Christopher Newman (producer): What you see on the screen is 10 times removed from not just the book but the first outline. Compromise was set in pretty early on.
One easy adjustment was setting the battle at night instead of day. Nighttime filming meant the production could save on having to pay for special effects to render detailed backgrounds and also helped the battle’s visual storytelling (it made the flaming arrows and exploding boats look cool, in other words).
The producers also decided to make the battle as subjective as possible. Scripting scenes around the perspective of a single familiar character would help keep the audience engaged in the story while reducing the number of expensive wide shots of the battle that would require showing masses of ships and soldiers. Though this filming style was born from solving a budget problem, it would become a unifying element across all Thrones battles.
David Benioff: There’s the vast, epic way of shooting a battle, where you see an army of a hundred thousand and an attacking army of 200,000. There’s also the kind of more ground’s-eye view, where you’re an infantryman and you’re running out there with an ax or a sword. You’re just kind of seeing what’s directly in front of you. And that can be a really visceral way of shooting a battle. We were trying to get it to feel real and gritty and dirty.
Dan Weiss: Any time you read any military account of an actual soldier’s experience of battle, whether it was in ancient Rome or all the way up to Vietnam and beyond, it’s never, “Then this flank moved over here and that flank.” It’s always, “This was a chaotic clusterfuck and I didn’t know which way I was going and I was half the time not sure if I was shooting at my own guys.”
And yet, even with the Blackwater battle cut down to its barest necessities, the plan still didn’t fit their schedule.
George R.R. Martin: We had a director who kept saying, “Cut this! Cut that! I can’t make the day.” I kept removing elements and it was getting to the point where it was getting as bad as the jousting tournament.
And then, just a few weeks before filming, the director had an unexpected family medical emergency and had to drop out. “I’d done quite a lot of work prepping that episode,” the director said. “Very sadly, I had an illness in the family and I had to leave. I knew I was leaving them with a difficult time, but it was absolutely unavoidable.”
Now the production had another tough problem. After all their pleading and negotiation with HBO for the money and latitude to stage a climactic battle, they were less than a month from shooting and didn’t have a definitive plan or a director.
Bernadette Caulfield (executive producer): That was my first year on the show and probably my first fight with David and Dan. They were like, “Oh, let’s get so-and-so.” I said, “Ninety percent of this is action. We need somebody who really knows action. It’s not easy. We should really look at Neil Marshall.”
David Benioff: Neil did Centurion and Dog Soldiers, movies where the guy is doing an incredible amount of really impressive action on a very thin budget.
Bernadette Caulfield: And other directors kept being mentioned and I kept saying, “I’m telling you, we need an action director!” Then David calls me up. At the time we didn’t know each other that well. And he goes: “Okay, Bernie, we’re going with your idea to hire Neil.”
I swear to God, my stomach dropped. I’m like, “Wait, my idea? This is a community decision!” I hung up the phone and I thought, Shit. Now it’s my idea. I’m responsible for this guy doing our first battle.
Neil Marshall (director): I was aware of Game of Thrones when season one was happening. I thought, This is really my kind of thing, and had my agent contact HBO and say, “If there’s any chance, I’d like to be able to direct an episode.” Their response was like, “We have our directors, thank you very much.”
Then a year or so later on a Saturday morning, I got an emergency call from Bernie to come and fix a situation that, from what I gathered, was a bit out of control. She asked if I would like to direct an episode. I was like, “Absolutely!” I’m thinking this will be in few months’ time. Then she said, “It’s on Monday morning and you’ve got one week to plan.”
David Benioff: Neil had never seen the show before. We gave him a crash course on season one and talked to him about the story constantly. But he was such a fast learner and so enthusiastic and just fell in love with it. He ended up being a great choice.
Neil Marshall: Dan and David weren’t like, “This is it and you just gotta do it.” They wanted ideas. Military history is a hobby of mine, so I brought a sense of strategy to the battle. Because in the script, 40,000 people arrive on a beach and they stand around a door. They had all this stuff at sea and the green fire, but once they got to the beach, it wasn’t really clear who was trying to achieve what. Stannis basically marshaled the whole battle from the beach. I felt that that wasn’t really in character and wasn’t interesting. I was like, “They can’t just stand around, they have to be doing other things, and we have to get Stannis in on the action.”
George R.R. Martin: Neil Marshall reversed everything the previous director said. Marshall was like, “Put in more.” He put so much back that I’d previously taken out and even added some stuff I hadn’t thought of. He was the hero of that episode.
Neil Marshall: I invented the boat that came in and was turned upside down with a battering ram suspended underneath to batter the gate. By bringing the ladders and the grappling hooks, it gave the scene more sense of purpose. And we had Stannis climb the wall and have a good fight up there and cut somebody’s head off.
Once filming began, the challenges did not let up. The episode marked the first of several grueling nighttime battle shoots for the Thrones team. Such sequences would test the cast and crew’s physical and mental stamina, and their ability to perform at their best in an environment that was universally described as torturous.
Neil Marshall: With the exception of the action on the boat, it was all shot in Magheramorne quarry, where it was pouring with rain in October, freezing cold with mud up to our knees. There was an overall draining factor for everybody involved. Particularly for the extras, who just have to stand around in the rain. I was worried it would look like we were doing the cliché of a battle in pouring rain, but it’s real rain and we couldn’t do anything about it.
Christopher Newman: It was moving like a locomotive. There was no way of stopping. Whatever we didn’t finish on time wasn’t going to be in the film. And the conditions were horrendous.
Eugene Michael Simon (Lancel Lannister): We had three days of rain. On the fourth day it stopped. Suddenly everybody was like, “Oh shit, what are we going to do?” Because the continuity wouldn’t match and we had tons of stuff to do. What happened was the most elaborate example of adapting I’d ever seen on a film set: There was a natural salt lake at the bottom of the quarry, but the water in it was below freezing—it didn’t ice over because it was salt water. They ran a fire hose from the bottom of this freezing cold lake, and had a man hold a fire hydrant at the top of the wall for that scene where Tyrion is giving his speech—“If I’m half a man, what does that make you!?” The deadly cold water from the lake was fired up into the air so it would rain down on us while Peter had to expertly give this pro speech. You can see our breath evaporating since we’re all freezing and it looks like we’re in the North.
Dan Weiss: Peter Dinklage in those scenes doesn’t have to act tired because by four o’clock in the morning he’s had 41-degree rain pouring on him for eight hours straight. He is bleary, weary, and tired. It was miserable.
Neil Marshall: But Peter was quite giddy that he was going to get out and start hitting people with an ax. He was really excited about leading this army and chopping a guy’s legs off and stuff like that. It was a nice change for the character rather than, you know, drinking and whoring and whatever else.
Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister): Some people rely on drunk, funny Tyrion. Funny and drunk lasts only so long.
George R.R. Martin: Tyrion’s speech on the steps, pretty much verbatim from the books: “There are brave men out there, let’s go kill them!” I love that scene.
Peter Dinklage: You gotta have a certain amount of confidence to pull that type of stuff off. I make it not my confidence, but the character’s confidence. So maybe that might seem like I’m confident? It’s really just the fact that this character, Tyrion, is sort of confident. I guess.
The battle scenes were intercut with Cersei awaiting her fate in Maegor’s Holdfast, with the queen regent becoming intoxicated and mocking Sansa.
Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister): It was one of the first times we see Cersei so brazen. She’s usually pretty snaky. Being drunk and thinking she may die, she’s just letting Sansa have it direct. It’s like this masochistic mentor relationship where she can’t help but torture Sansa. And I think that’s driven by envy that you see in her views. And frustration that, as women, we’re stuck. You know what I mean? She thinks she’s helping her. But yeah, she’s just horrid.
Neil Marshall: I remember talking to Lena and saying, “Cersei is basically acting like the drunk aunt at a wedding. It’s like she’s had a few too many drinks and can’t control her mouth.” She was like, “I know exactly what you mean.”
Headey could empathize with Cersei’s envy. Her character told Sansa, “I’d rather face a thousand swords than be shut up inside with this flock of frightened hens.” Headey likewise longed for bona fide action scenes.
Lena Headey: I kept begging them for a sword and a horse.
For the scenes in Blackwater Bay, the team constructed a boat in an entirely unremarkable “car park” (a.k.a. parking lot). The sea was added later with visual effects. The boat is probably the show’s biggest and most repeatedly used visual-effects cheat. Every sailing boat seen in the show—Baratheon, Targaryen, Lannister, or Greyjoy—is actually the same boat (except for the bow of Euron Greyjoy’s Silence). So while most of the Blackwater cast was filming in a quarry, [Liam] Cunningham was in a car park, eyeing an approaching “barge” filled with deadly wildfire.
Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth): In reality that barge was just a little thing [about six feet long] with two pipes leaking green liquid out of it while two guys pushed it up the car park.
In the episode, Bronn fired a burning arrow to ignite Tyrion’s wildfire trap. The resulting massive green explosion consumed the bulk of Stannis’s fleet and blew away viewers. Finishing the effects by the episode’s air date went down to the very last minute.
David Benioff: We were turning in VFX shots on “Blackwater” a week before airing. HBO quality control got the tapes with 20 minutes to spare [before the deadline].
George R.R. Martin: When the wildfire explodes, it’s glorious. It’s one of my favorite episodes of the show. Certainly my favorite of the four I wrote [throughout the series].
Christopher Newman: “Blackwater” was a litmus test on whether we could pull things off. We had done something we didn’t think was possible. The confidence that came out of doing it set the tone for the subsequent seasons.
Liam Cunningham: Neil texted me a review from Rolling Stone that said, “This is possibly the best hour of television that’s ever been made.” And Neil, who had never done television before, wrote, “Not bad for a first-timer.”

2020.09.28 16:39 RexiconJesse The Unexpected Banes and Boons that Alter the Villain's Plan An All Dice Table

Get this and our two other villain-based All Die Tables as a fancy PDF at rexiconjesse.itch.io/one-thing-led-to-another. You can download it for free.
Like the villain, their plan should be a living, breathing thing that changes based on influences completely outside of their control. Banes complicate things, forcing them to abandon or change something important. Boons grant them unexpected benefits they can use to better their plan. How many boons and banes will they receive? Just like in a real plan, they have no idea. Every odd-numbered roll of the die in these tables are a bane, and every even-numbered roll of the die is a boon. So a roll on this All Dice Table could give them six boons, six bans, or any combination. How exactly this changes their plan is up to you as a DM, but the groundwork set up by these tables will help you create a more dynamic plan for the villain.
Myself (u/RexiconJesse) and u/DougtheDragonborn made this, and we hope you enjoy it.

How to use an all dice table

Example:
They had to alter the plan when they discovered the means to awaken an ancient beast at a time of their choosing. Further alterations occurred after someone working for them spies on the party and returns with pertinent information. After these developments, the villain's focus shifted to strengthening their grasp on local governments. They searched for an answer, but their plan still has a vital flaw. The plan has a devastating deadman switch should it fail. Now taking care of the party is the main priority.

Roll 1d20 They had to alter the plan when
1 a druid grove ruined their headquarters after encroaching on the druid’s land.
2 they discovered the means to awaken an ancient beast at a time of their choosing.
3 a massive flood completely submerged a strategic point they were going to utilize.
4 an affluent person gained knowledge of their plan and doubled their funding to see it through, granting them far more resources.
5 a series of vivid nightmares tanks their belief in their plan, forcing them to confront their ideals and seek further guidance.
6 a delve into ancient history showed that someone else had already tried something similar and failed, so they can learn from their failure.
7 a future version of themself has traveled back in time and is trying to stop them.
8 a nearly forgotten deity sees potential in their plan and offers insight into how to manipulate other deities and their followers to aid their scheme.
9 their partner continues to doubt their plan, making them self-conscious and causing them to second-guess every idea they have.
10 they found a way to make a copy of themself.
11 they were cursed.
12 propaganda allowed for the recruitment of more workers.
13 beasts used for manual labor began to become crazed under a full moon.
14 they found the love of their life, who encourages their deeds.
15 a plague of insatiable rot expanded throughout their base.
16 they partnered up with a local temple, as both benefit from their plan
17 a nearby monarch caught wind of their work.
18 land with a great natural resource was given to them in a family member’s wake.
19 a seer predicted their downfall.
20 the villain had a change of heart and wants to stop the plans they set in motion. The rest of the rolls show what has been put in motion and is out of their control.

Roll 1d12 Further alterations occurred after someone working for them
1 gained some power and broke away, forming their own group that's striving for the same goal. Now they have direct competition.
2 convinced a beloved NPC to betray the party and side with the villain.
3 defects from the villain, offering the party vital information to disrupt the villain’s plan but the information is time sensitive, and they’ll only give it if they offer the NPC something in return.
4 makes contact with an entire religion and deity that supports their plan.
5 sold them out to the state.
6 discovers a large group of people willing to work for anyone who can pay well.
7 becomes cursed with lycanthropy.
8 spies on the party, and returns with pertinent information.
9 stumbled into the faerie realm.
10 discovers they can command beasts.
11 the ghost of a family member tries to disrupt the plot.
12 rises in the ranks, with the goal to overthrow the villain, but the villain knows of this plan.

Roll 1d10 After these developments, the villain's focus shifted to
1 finding a brand new type of henchperson.
2 accruing and storing gold and gemstones for future use.
3 strengthening their grasp on local governments.
4 creating a simulacrum.
5 finding joy before their untimely demise.
6 gaining a fanbase.
7 a dying friend.
8 warding their base against attack.
9 gaining the trust of the public.
10 buying as much land as possible for further expansion.

Roll 1d8 They searched
1 far and wide, but never found a key element to their plan they desperately wanted.
2 for a partner who wanted to see their goals made manifest. And they found them.
3 for anyone who would help them, but only found a devil, willing to help fill their ranks... for a price.
4 the depths of the ocean for a safe place to execute part (or all) of their plan and found it in a well-protected cave.
5 for an answer, but their plan still has a vital flaw.
6 for a new challenge, as this became far too easy.
7 their conscious to reflect if what they are doing is right.
8 for assassins to remove key people who would oppose them before they become a problem.

Roll 1d6 The plan
1 took a turn for the worst after their entire workforce abandoned them.
2 changed course, going far better than they first envisioned.
3 is held together by a thread.
4 has a devastating deadman switch should it fail.
5 now only involves the villain themself.
6 can only come to fruition if the party intervenes.

Roll 1d4 Now
1 there’s still one piece that’s missing before it can be complete.
2 taking care of the party is the main priority.
3 they request an audience.
4 the date is set for the final steps.

2020.09.28 15:47 WholesomeSpirit Dating an Aspie guy as an Aspie girl

Hi,
I dated a guy who I realized has asperger’s many years later. Aspie women tend to get obsessed over people while Aspie men tend to get obsessed over things, right?
I found him to be so incredibly soothing to be around because I think a lot and I have lots of complex thoughts but I had a hard time with brevity. He says things so simply and we’d watch cartoons all day. Back then, I was so heavy with my automated mask, I tried to not watch cartoons even though I love them and being around him made me feel better. We’d hold hands and twiddle our thumbs over each other’s and we’d go to the lake and spend hours staring at pretty flowers. We’d stay home and do nothing all day other than listen to the sounds of the rain. Life felt so simple with him.
Things went awry when I was going through abuse at home. He didn’t have the cognitive empathethic abilities to acknowledge nor understand what I was experiencing and I was hyposensitive to my experiences. At some point, I started meditating and cleansing my soul of past traumas and woke up. I started wondering why my lover did not care I was having a hard time?
After dealing with so many bullies and toxic people, I thought he might be a narcissist. He was extremely self-centered and he only loved material things but not me. Because I didn’t know very much about what a Cluster B narcissist actually was and I had no idea he was autistic (there were several signs but he never told me), at the time I lacked discernment and had meltdowns over the anxiety that I may be trapped. My lack of executive function made it hard for me to be self aware of my emotions and needs. No one taught me how to communicate effectively because I came from abuse and I had no idea I was on the spectrum. He asked his cop friends for advice. They must’ve given him terrible advice because he cheated on me. I felt like I never truly mattered to him. Eventually, we triggered and overwhelmed each other like a terrible feedback loop and then it was over. This relationship was traumatizing for me and it was the experience I’d flashback to often whether the trigger was good or bad.
I want to date Aspie men again but I am afraid Asperger attributes are fixed by sex. I know I can be wrong and I don’t know very much. I am afraid I might meet another person who doesn’t value cognitive empathy and emotional intelligence. I am afraid he will pick his car over me. I am afraid he will be selfish and unwilling to understand my needs. I am afraid he won’t care if I am going through something hard. I am afraid he won’t give me hugs or pat me on my back when I am crying. I am afraid he will only listen to his morally-deprived friends for crappy red pill advice and assume those tips are what he needs to follow in order for him to belong. My feelings matter and they have always mattered. At the time, I didn’t know.
I would truly appreciate your inputs. Please be kind and gentle and understanding in your response, I love truth but I also get hurt easily by criticism. Thank you.

You can find the original post, complete with all the shiny covers, on my website here...
If you would like to be kept up to date with the upcoming lists, please subscribe to my newsletter by clicking this link. I don’t send out letters too often, pretty much once a month when this list goes out… and occasionally if I release a book or something.
As always, this is not a comprehensive list, but only includes all the books I have heard about so far.
If you have a fantasy novel you are self publishing in October or beyond, let me know either in the comments, or by emailing me, and I shall add it to the page. There are but 3 requirements:
  1. It must be a self published fantasy novel.
  2. It must have a Goodreads page.

27th September – Lady Vago’s Malediction by A.K.M. Beach

In the blackened heart of a cursed forest, a banshee haunts her crumbling castle with lethal screams.
Lady Vago is trapped in this place. She cannot fulfill her purpose as a banshee: to warn her loved ones of their deaths and watch over them while they pass. To solve the mystery of her imprisonment, she must sift through the rubble and ruin that surrounds her. By communing with old paintings, broken furniture, and even the stones themselves, she rediscovers who she was in life.
Before she was Lady Vago, she was Rovena Stoddard, a sharp-witted horse merchant’s daughter that caught the eye of a charming baron. Lord Kalsten Vago’s life as a wandering knight was over, but it inspired visions of a better life for his most vulnerable subjects. Rovena was far less afraid of bold change than his staunch and loyal steward, who saw her presence as a threat to Lord Kalsten’s success. Love and shared dreams alone wouldn’t overcome the controversy of the couple’s hasty and unequal union, as well as the trials of governing a fledgling barony—Rovena knew that. What she failed to recognize was the deeper darkness taking root in Vago lands and hearts…
Every memory of what Rovena loved is a reminder of what she lost, but she cannot let grief halt her search. Devoted spectres of ash are begging their lady for an end to their torment, and she will not let their agony–or her own–go unanswered anymore.

1st October - Arcanist (Spellmonger #12) by Terry Mancour

A Belligerent Spring
Being the most powerful wizard in the world can be a challenge. After defending his fledgling realm against the undead lord Gaja Katar all winter long, Count Minalan of the Magelaw faces a new threat in the spring: the Nemovort Shakathet, favored of Korbal, leading the mighty hordes out of the Penumbra. This time Minalan faces a real strategist, who drives his armies with purpose and efficiency. This time, the road to war leads through Megelin Castle and the vulnerable lands to the south of Vanador. This time, old enemies become allies, and old friends become valuable assets. Just another month in the life of the Spellmonger.
War, however, is not what is preoccupying Minalan; the knowledge of the end of the world is. As he broods on existential issues and debates with various goddesses and Alka Alon about Calidore’s fate, he must overcome his own fears and anxieties and impose order on the situation before everything goes into the chamberpot. The solution? Hire an Arcanist, a specialist in the obscure and trivial, to organize and investigate the many matters Minalan has to manage and bring them to order.
A busy wizard needs good organization to get it all done, after all, so Minalan hires Heeth the Butler to dive into the details while he prepares to fight the darkness. That buys the Spellmonger time to hunt down spies, taunt the Count of Nion into invading the Magelaw, lend aid to the sister realm of the Wilderlaw, who face their own war against the darkness, indulge his wife’s desire for cheesemaking, make staffing decisions, ferret out a plot to betray him by one of his vassals, and occasionally lead a special forces squadron of high-powered warmagi into battle, which is convenient. He also gets help from a wisecracking bard with a talent for espionage, an ancient intelligence who is suddenly mobile, and an insistent cow goddess, but each new ally is fraught with problems of their own. An obsessive know-it-all with a rare talent for obscure trivia is the right man in the right job. Who knew that the Spellmonger just needed an . . . ARCANIST!

2020.09.28 15:33 mainegra Issue with user code g

Question from NoureenR on github, issue #641:
I am trying to execute g_template input file by using EGSnrc GUI, I am getting this error message:At line 1022 of file g_win6432.f (unit = 9)Fortran runtime error: Cannot open file '$HEN_HOUSE/spectra/co60.spectrum': No such file or directory
Another issue, in user code egs_kerma there is a data file emuen_icru90_1.5MeV, I am trying to regenerate this file by using g code. Can somebody please help with the input file for this.
I appreciate if somebody can help me with these issues. Thanks
Answer:
Replace $HEN_HOUSE with its actual value. To find this value, issue the command echo $HEN_HOUSE on the command line which should output the location of your EGSnrc system. Copy and paste this path in the input file g_template.egsinp to replace $HEN_HOUSE.
Depending on how old your EGSnrc system is, co60.spectrum might not be anymore in the folder $HEN_HOUSE/spectra/ but in $HEN_HOUSE/spectra/egsnrc/ , you will have to try!
For your second request, you could use the branch feature-g-update from the EGSnrc github repository (see also pull request PR#598) which is an updated and improved version of the g app. It also comes with a very detailed documentation and examples on how to generate E*muen/rho data bases such as emuen_icru90_1.5MeV. If you don't feel comfortable using git branches, let me know, and I will provide you with the new version of g and a pdf copy of its manual so you can get started working on your problem.
As of November 2017, Mortran apps can replace environment variables with their actual value. It seems your version of g dates back to when environment variables were not expanded. You might consider updating your EGSnrc system!

2020.09.28 15:12 AzorMX THE SEARCH FOR THE GREATEST SWITCH SHMUP: EPISODE 28 – Raiden V: Director’s Cut

Before I begin, I just want to remind everyone that all of my reviews can be found at my site: www.azormx.com. I tried to keep it as minimalist as possible, and it doesn't have any add or any other intrusive elements, so the content is king. Do check it out, as reviews are usually live there before I publish them elsewhere. Any way, on to the review!

The shmup genre hasn’t been a mainstream genre in a long time. To be honest, I don’t think it ever was, even during the arcade days. While we certainly don’t have a shortage of shmups, let alone new release, they usually come from smaller teams. Indies have taken it upon themselves to become a guiding light for all of us. Their creations have been nothing short of amazing! However, we don’t really have anything we could call a “AAA” shmup. We do seem to have the next closest thing: Raiden.
Developer: Moss Co.
Platform: Nintendo Switch
Release date: Jul 25, 2019
Price: $29.99
Tate: Unfortunately… no. This really needed to have TATE
Raiden V: Director’s Cut is a vertical shmup set in a fictional but real world. It claims to be the original bullet-hell, and after playing it extensively I gotta say that I agree. Raiden V features some intense air combat, coupled with giant bosses and some jaw-dropping transitions between areas.

THE GREAT INTRO CHECKLIST

Right out of the gate, what caught my attention was the intro. The best way I can put this is that it has everything great about shmups in a short video. It has a great track, it has giant enemies, it has ships and it even has pieces of lore I do not understand! Simply amazing!
Most importantly, it is a very accurate portrayal as to what you should expect from the game. Unlike other shmups, Raiden goes all out in the presentation department, with the story taking a mayor role. Another way I can put this, is that it certainly feels like a considerable effort was placed in every element of the game. Raiden V features a level of polish that very few shmups can claim to have.

WELCOME TO THE CUSTOMIZATION STATION

One of Raiden’s strength is the amount of customization you have available for your ship. At the beginning of the game, you can choose between one of 3 different ships: Azuma, Spirit of Dragon and Moulin Rouge. Each of these ships has different stats in terms of attack, defense and speed. They also have their own sub-shot which is always firing along with your main cannon.
On top of selecting a ship, you can arm yourself with 3 out of 9 different weapons. Those 9 weapons are grouped into 3 categories: Vulcan, Laser and Plasma. You can pick, or rather you must pick 1 for each category. The result is a combat style that is unique to you.
During your play throughs, you will encounter several power-up orbs. These orbs will power up each of your weapons up to 10 times! Each of these orbs can be either red, blue or purple depending on the weapon it powers up. The orbs cycle the colors, with an outer dot indicating a timer until it changes colors. This allows you to control which weapon you want to power up, giving you the flexibility to pick your own style or choose a weapon for the occasion.
The best part is that absolutely no power-ups are lost upon death! This means that you are free to retry to your heart's content and play at your own pace. Raiden won't punish you or set you up for failure with an unrecoverable situation.
I didn’t put too much attention into weapon selection at first. I figured it wouldn’t be too relevant, as I would probably just play the entire game with a single weapon, but the advanced scoring mechanics and the rank system were quick to make me second guess my decision.

ACE PILOT

At the core of Raiden V, there are 2 main systems to be aware of: your rank and your flash level. Both of them measure your combat capabilities, although in different ways. Your flash point gauge is a score multiplier that tracks how fast you defeat your enemies. By defeating enemies as soon as possible after spawning, you can earn higher multipliers to increase your flash gauge. By having quick kills, you can raise it to higher levels to increase your score. Your rank, on the other hand, only concerns itself with how many enemies you’ve defeated.
Your rank doubles as the deciding factor of which path you will be taking. Raiden features branching paths with an A, B, C or S version of each stage. Depending on your total destruction rate, you will either move up or down in rank after a stage. While I do not know the exact numbers, I believe having more than 98% destruction rate will increase your rank, 90 – 98% will keep it as is and <90% should decrease your rank. S rank stages are presumably harder than A/B/C stages, with C being the lowest.
Apart from having a higher score and challenging yourself with the difficulty, the importance of S rank is getting the true ending. In order to truly watch the ending of the game, you need to reach the final stage on S rank using a single credit. You also need to power up your 3 weapons to level 10. Once you meet those conditions, you will be able to challenge the final boss. Alternatively, you could just fulfill the level 10 weapons condition to fight the true final boss.

THE BEST CHEERLEADER

A new addition to Raiden V is the cheer system. By accomplishing certain in-game milestones like a certain number of enemies destroyed, you will get an achievement. These achievements are broadcasted to any players connected to the leaderboards. They can then “cheer” on your achievement to increase your cheer gauge. This goes both ways, as you can also cheer the achievements of your fellow Raiden players.
Once the cheer gauge is full, you can unleash it to clear the screen and gain a drastically stronger sub-shot. Think of it as a devastating bomb, only more devastating and easier to fill. It clears screens and decimates even the bosses.
Perhaps many people won’t think too much of it, but I found it really interesting to know that there’s someone on the other side celebrating my achievements. Likewise, there were times where I left my game on pause to do other stuff, but held on to my controller to provide support for my comrades.

SWIFT DESTRUCTION

Everything I’ve mentioned before plays out in the general strategy of the game. Assuming you want to get the best results, you need to know where to hit and how to hit hard. For the untrained eye, most shmups just look like games where you fire away with complete disregard and hope the enemy dies. This is definitely not the case in Raiden.
In order to succeed, you must be able to find your rhythm and read the stage. Learn the enemy formations and strategize the quickest kills. Be there before the enemy arrives and take them down before they realize what hit them. If you want to face the true final boss, then you must also learn to juggle your weapons and find the moments to upgrade them. Maxing a weapon and then switching is a recipe for disaster, as you don’t want to be on the later stages with a level one weapon and risk your flash level or destruction rate. With so many weapons and ship types, your strategy to succeed will be unique to you!

LORE GALORE

One of the main selling points, at least per the game itself, is the story. Raiden V features an extensive story that is fully voiced and occurs as you play the game. This story elements come as the prologue and epilogue scenes, as well as all the events happening mid stage.
As you fly your way to the levels, characters will be advancing the story by having conversations and narrating the current events. The dialogue is available on one of the gadgets located on the right side of the screen. You can read anything you might have missed and even pause to read the on-screen log of events (up to a certain number of events, as the log scrolls to open way for new text).
As for my opinion of the story, I have absolutely no idea of what happened during the game. I played my fair share of runs, but I found it next to impossible to focus on the dialogue while trying my hardest to survive. The voice acting would have been my saving grace, but I found the sound mixing to be the opposite of ideal for listening to dialogue. I even tried lowering the sound effects and BGM to see if I could focus on dialogue to no avail.
The text is also incredibly small when playing on docked mode. It gets even worse when playing handheld.

THE WORST CHEERLEADER

Out of all the voices, Eshiria’s was the one who got on my nerves the most at the beginning. Other than having her role as navigator on the plot, she also critiques your gameplay. In-between stage scenes, she will provide commentary describing your gameplay. She will be quick to point out if you did well, but also if you did poorly. On my early runs, when I was still learning, it would tilt me to listen to her complaining to me about stats I did not understand.
And perhaps, a huge part of my problems was a lack of understanding of the game mechanics. I listened to her complain about my destruction rate without knowing it was about my rank. She also complained about destruction speed without me knowing it was about the flash point.
The problem is that the game never bothered explaining any of its mechanics to me. I really looked around for some sort of tutorial to no avail. I had to resort to 3rd party resources. While that isn’t uncommon, I really don’t like games with obscure mechanics that can’t be discerned in-game.
Once I got better and consistently reach the S levels, I finally started to value her advice. Of course, I wouldn’t count on everyone reaching the same enlightenment as I did. In my opinion, her comments would more often than not add insult to injury. Once again, it’s not really the commentary, it’s the fact that none of what she said made practical sense until I started digging on the wiki.

GADGETS AND THE SCREEN REAL ESTATE

Perhaps the worst omission from Raiden V is the lack of a TATE mode. Vertical shooters don’t really have an excuse to do this, with the existence of add-ons like the flip grip or rotating monitors. Instead, Raiden decided to make the most out of the free space and add several gadgets.
In standard fashion, these gadgets will keep your stats like score, flash level, the dialogue and even hi-score statistics. Your left gadget can even be cycled between the score chart and cheer notification, in-game tips and global statistics. Out of those, the tips are definitely the winners. They do give some important advice, such as staying on top of the guns of the first boss to avoid damage.

NOT A FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD

Every stage is divided into smaller scenes. These scenes serve as a way to catch your breath and tally your score. There’s even a nifty “restart scene” option that allows you to replay a scene. Choosing to restart will deny you the option to upload your score to the leaderboard, but serves as a great way to practice or even “fix” a run to so can get to the true ending.
Every once in a while, the action will pan out and open the way to a bigger stage, with you looking smaller in comparison. I admire the grandioseness of the resulting scenes, but they were also quite impractical. Think about your weapons, the destruction rate and the flash gauge. An extended stage means longer travel distances from side to side. Having a bigger stage means you move slower, which reduces the pacing of the game to a crawl. Reaching enemies quickly becomes a struggle. Worst yet, I’ve counted times where it took me whopping 5 seconds to go from side to side of the stage.

THE OG BULLET HELL

Despite all the fun of blasting enemies quickly to gain flash levels, I gotta say that I found the combat, specifically the bullets, to be lacking in grace. For a game that’s the original bullet hell, most enemy volleys feel like bullet showers. There’s no finesse in them, just a bunch of bullets moving towards you. Dodging them isn’t fun, it’s survival. The problem only gets worse in higher difficulties where the bullets just go faster.
Not all patterns are as bad though. While the vast majority will be just a bunch on increasingly faster bullets thrown at you, some exceptional patterns will show from time to time. As a result, fights tend to be very hit or miss, with both hits and misses being on their respective extremes.
What certainly doesn’t help is that the bullets are very hard to see. As pretty as the backgrounds might be, they are very busy and the quick motion makes them into a blur. Bullets don’t have their characteristic outlines or color palettes to become distinguishable. Some even blend with your own vulcan. The result is a lot of cheap kills caused by intentional obfuscation. It this was their intention, then perhaps I’m being too harsh, but you know visibility is usually one of my pet peeves in shmups.

REPLAYABILITY AND LONGEVITY

As far as game length goes, I consider Raiden V to be one of the longer ones. I was surprised after my first run of the game, as it took me 50+ minutes to complete the campaign. Usually, my baseline for shmups is around half an hour, which made this one almost twice as long. While I’m not fond of longer campaigns, I know a lot of people would certainly be glad to know there is plenty of content.
Of course, playing through the campaign isn’t enough to view the entire game. If you recall, most stages have 4 versions of themselves. Those versions are separated by the ranks: S/A/B/C. This means you would need at least 4 runs to see everything the game has to offer. There’s also 6 different endings to uncover.
Also new to the Director’s Cut edition are 2 bonus levels. These level are slightly different from your typical levels. The bonus missions will challenge you to fight a new boss ir oder to obtain medals. Dealing damage will detach the medals from the boss, allowing you to catch them. Gather enough medals and you will advance to the next phase. Higher medals mean higher ranking. Taking damage will take medals away from you, so surviving continues to be a priority.
Lastly, there is a new boss mission mode that allow you to play “boss rush” missions. These missions have certain conditions, like using a specific weapon or fighting at a specific HP level. The targets are usually 1-3 bosses. Boss mission is a very fun arcadey mode for those who enjoyed the boss fights and want more of them.

SOUND EXCELLENCE

If there’s a factor that merits my highest praise is the sound department. Simply put, the OST is fantastic. The track length syncs perfectly with the stages, and it always fits the mood. I just couldn’t get enough of the OST, and listening to it while writing this review was the recipe for a perfect Sunday! I also got some good coffee that would make the captain proud.
For all the praise the music gets from me, it still is dragged down by the terrible sound mixing. Similarly to the voice acting, I tried to mess with the sound settings to increase the volume and reduce the sound effects, but it still wasn’t enough. The tracks were great but I struggled to listen to them amidst all the explosions. The calm moments were great, as they let me listen to the songs in peace.

LAST WORDS

Raiden is a master class in shmup design for the wrong reasons. Its high points perfectly illustrate how shmups should look and feel. The low points also show what you should NOT do when creating a shmup game. Despite all of this, it all comes down to how fun a game is.
Raiden V is a very fun game. It isn’t different, but it’s certainly very polished. I delivers some levels of quality that are notably absent in the majority of the games. As a concept, I feel like it serves as an example of how current gen shmups should be. The execution fell flat in some regards, but as a whole I was satisfied with the time I spent with the game. It does come with a hefty price tag, so my advice is to check this game out when you find a decent sale. I got mine at -70%.

2020.09.28 12:23 kafa85 What's in the iPhone 12? Wall Street analysts gave us their predictions.

Apple users are still waiting for the iPhone 12 release after the tech giant unveiled new iPads, Apple Watches and a new service suite at a virtual event last week.Wall Street analysts are betting Apple (AAPL) will hold another event to introduce the next iPhone in the coming weeks, with the new devices hitting shelves in mid-October. During the company's latest earnings call in July, executives acknowledged the new iPhone models would go on sale several weeks after the late September sales date of last year.
There's plenty of time left for Apple fans to become obsessed with the features that the newest iPhones might have. Expectations are high, analysts said - the iPhone 12 could trigger a "supercycle" device upgrade as users cheered for what was expected to be the first 5G iPhone. Here's what analysts predict users might see from the new iPhones:

We're getting an iPhone 5G, right?
Analysts think the answer to that question is xo yes.Investors are expecting the iPhone 5G very much," said D.A. Davidson analyst Tom Forte. will be a big deal for Apple, which is slower than 5G phone games, behind rivals such as Motorola (MSI), Samsung (SSNLF) and others launching 5G devices, Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives predicted an upgrade. Around 350 million iPhones within the next year to 18 months, while more consumers use their phones longer before upgrading to new devices. But connecting to newer, faster wireless networks is a big selling point. But it's possible that not all iPhone 12 models will connect to the fastest 5G network.
The base model iPhone 12 may only connect to low and mid-range 5G networks. (Which is faster than 4G networks, but does not recognize 5G very fast speeds), while high-end models tend to connect to the fastest "millimeter wave" 5G networks, according to Moor Insights and Strategy. Analyze Anshel Sag.That's because connecting the phone to the fastest 5G network requires more parts, making it more expensive to manufacture.I would be shocked if they came out with millimeter waves for the base model," Sag said.Bank of America analyst Wamsi Mohan said Apple may opt to have only the highest-end iPhone 12 models connected to 5G millimeter waves. In any case, Apple is likely to launch the 5G iPhone both in the US and outside the US, according to Wedbush's Ives, as network technology may vary from country to country.

What if I don't care about 5G?
You're still lucky Analysts said Apple could release the iPhone 12 4G version or the iPhone SE for less than the new 4G version it launched earlier this year. But it's not clear when Forte, from DA Davidson, said he thinks the lowest-priced option in the iPhone 12 lineup this fall could be the 4G version.Others, including Ives and Sag, say the new iPhone 4G models are likely to enter. To the market in the first half of next year at a lower price than the 5G version.

How many versions will there be?
Apple typically releases several new iPhones (last year three models), analysts expect this year Apple will release all three or four iPhone 12 models.Ives wrote that he expects to see four iPhone 12 models, including one with a larger 6.7-inch display. If Apple launches four new iPhones, one of them could be the smallest iPhone Apple produces, both Sag and Mohan said. There's a large audience that is still interested in the smallest iPhone," he said. "It's just a question of whether Apple thinks the market is big enough to make it worth it."

2020.09.28 10:57 Buck_Joffrey Wealth Formula Episode 231: Should You Buy a Franchise?

Catch the full episode: https://www.wealthformula.com/podcast/231-should-you-buy-a-franchise/
Buck: Welcome back to the show everyone today my guest on Wealth Formula Podcast is Kim Daly. Now Kim, well she has been in this space, this franchise space for a long time, for the last 20 years and she's been helping people achieve their financial goals, enabling them to get into the franchise opportunities that are most appropriate for them. She's got a lot of incredible background but you know her skills are really matching a client's background interest and skills and ultimately life goals and to matching them into top franchise opportunities and so today we're going to pick her brain get some insight into what may seem like a daunting process, but one that you know I've considered. I know a number of people have considered in the past and with that let me introduce Kim Daly. Kim, welcome to the show.
Kim: Thank you Buck it's great to be here.
Buck: So Kim I want to just start out by asking you, like how did you get into this space as a franchise consultant? How did you arrive there?
Kim: I mean are you questioning that I didn't grow up saying hey I want to be a franchise consultant?
Buck: That's right.
Kim: Yeah I fell into it like you know a lot of people fall into their thing. I was an entrepreneur and it started many businesses and the first job and the only job I actually had after college, I was on my way to med school and I answered a classified ad in the newspaper, remember the classified ads? And it was for a franchise company and it changed the direction of my life.
Buck: So you were going to be a doctor is that right?
Kim: Yeah so growing up there were two things I wanted to be Buck. I wanted to be a motivational speaker and I wanted to be a doctor but like how does one become a motivational speaker really right so you go to med school and you want to help people you go to med school but here I am you know many years later and basically I am a motivational speaker I mean I inspire people to the dream of business ownership and using my own entrepreneurial experiences in the last 18 years as a franchise consultant and really becoming an expert and a voice in this industry to help people really understand what franchising is, what's the real value proposition, what are you getting, what are you owed, what are you not owed, how to explore franchising, how to ask the right questions, so that's what I do.
Buck: Have you yourself owned franchises and I mean I just obviously don't know a whole lot about your background but have you actually you know owned them yourself and is that part of the experience?
Kim: Yes so this business that I'm in called Franchoice.
Buck: It's a franchise isn't it?
Kim: Yes it is. It's like a franchise, I mean we don't have a franchise agreement we have a consultant agreement but it's the same setup. You said you're from Minnesota we are headquartered in Eden Prairie. So I am supported yeah I'm supported by a corporate office I pay royalties back to my back to my corporate office and so and they go out what they do is they go out and they contract with the very best franchisors. So they're doing all of the homework for me in terms of creating an inventory of opportunities that I can bring to people so that my full-time effort can be dedicated to finding investors who want to learn about franchising and then bringing the two together like a matchmaker.
Buck: Got it okay. So let's talk about first of all what is a franchise and why should anyone consider you know buying into a franchise?
Kim: Okay sure so you know a franchise investment really, I'm going to go for the investors perspective that's sort of the audience. So a franchise investment is all about buying down the learning curve of starting a business right because you're partnering yourself with people who've already gone out there and figured it out. So the entrepreneurial path is to create as you go right the trial and error the missed opportunities from spending time trying to figure things out and that can become very costly right? And that's why in fact many entrepreneurs fail mainly because they run out of money before they really figure out how to make money. So here on the franchising path where from day one you're gonna pay a franchise fee right which goes to the franchisor and that buys you access to this proven business plan, the initial training, the vendors, technology, a proven marketing plan and ongoing support. So it's this idea that you are in business for yourself but not by yourself. So you're not that entrepreneur out there in the wilderness chopping down trees hoping that you're making up a trail that you know leads somewhere good, you're paying a fee to walk on a trail where the path has already been created and you're going to be supported all along the way. So that's kind of like tactically what we're doing is we're buying this we're buying down the learning curve because we're buying into this proven business plan but ultimately when I'm really working with my investors I really want to make a connection for them to the partnership. So it's one thing to buy into a proven plan but it's another thing to buy into an organization of very strong leadership where the people that you're giving your royalty dollars to have your best interest at heart where they are out there every day looking to grow the opportunity keep your opportunity relevant to the times like a time like we're in right. I've always said for years that widgets will not make an investor happy long, term like buying a you know a particular business because you love the product. Leadership is what makes you happy as an investor. When your leadership can pivot your company in an adverse time can keep your company growing and keep it relevant to the competition and to the changing customer demand I mean we're in business to make money so that's ultimately what keeps your business thriving and growing and makes you money right. So ultimately what you're really buying in a franchise is you're buying a relationship.
Buck: Yeah makes sense so and let's talk about you know just comparing that and contrasting that with you know other options and for example you know I before we got on I mentioned you know I've started a few different businesses myself, I would say that it's definitely not for everybody to do that because I think there's as you mentioned there's a significant learning curve frequently. Your idea ends up either you know doing great or you end up losing a bunch of money and then you also fundamentally I think have to have a certain itch and I think that that might be a little different from your typical franchise person who's really looking potentially on something to say I don't need to be this guy who came up with this new idea, I just like this idea of running a business and I don't really want to waste a bunch of money I mean is that kind of the major difference between starting from scratch and franchising?
Kim: 100 so well said yeah right franchisees want to take somebody else's idea run with it and make money and you know I talk about building wealth through franchising and the wealth gets created through the scale like it could take an entrepreneur five years to figure out the business and get it up and going and in that five-year time period I could take a franchisee who could own five locations of whatever they're doing right because again not sitting and figuring anything out from day one you are going you're moving toward profitability because you have this proven plan in front of you and you're executing and you're being held accountable you know to execute and to go.
Buck: Yeah and then and then the other option of course is to look and say you know go to one of these sites like biz buy sell blah blah blah you know and take a business that you know that is currently on sale that may not be a franchise and potentially buy something like that. I honestly have looked in that space before because again just having some various interests and thinking I'll plug and chug let's do it. The challenge there I've found is being a guy who started businesses on my own, I know there's always stuff buried in closets that if you buy something unless it's a very very significantly large business with operations and things in place and management that you can potentially get screwed.
Kim: Skeletons in the closet.
Buck: Yeah right is that kind of and I don't mean to be giving you the answers but I'm guessing what the problems are with some of the other approaches to business ownership is that how you would is that kind of what you see in that space?
Kim: Yeah you know what you know what Buck I mean when I meet someone and I'm asking you know what are your goals what do you want to use this business for, there are many ways to skin the cat right? Franchising is just one option. I certainly don't try to push everybody into a franchise investment, it's not right for everybody and for that person who may be looking to recover a corporate salary let's say you've been severed from your job and you're looking to you know recover 200 or 300 thousand dollars in income like within three or four months I mean starting a business from scratch is not the answer right it's not going to happen so buying an existing business for sale could be a better fit but the thing you have to you have to know is that if you're buying a business that's throwing off that kind of cash you're paying for that right so multiple of that and so you that ups the risk because now you got to put down you know lots and lots and lots of money compared to if you have the time to kind of allow the business to ramp and like you said you get to be there for every you know hiccup in the business. When people come to me and ask me about buying an existing business for sale I say it's sort of like the difference between having a baby and adopting a teenager right so if you if you adopt a teenager and you haven't been there to like develop the personality and you don't really know like why they have a chip on their shoulder and other than that teenagers all have chips on their shoulders but like you know I see where I'm going with that versus when you have a baby and you're there for every milestone in that child's life and you're developing and nurturing that personality then when they grow up you know exactly how they got to who they are right that's sort of that's exactly what you were saying and that's sort of the difference between the two but I mean again I help people buy into existing franchises that are for sale so it really depends on the investors goals and the time frame in which they would like to achieve those goals assuming that they're realistic and that's part of what I do as their consultant is to help them understand what reality looks like and to make sure that you know any of these owning a business buying a business is the right option for them.
Buck: Got it and and so when you when you think about returns on these, well there's two questions I have. One is if you could talk about you know the cost and that sort of thing for franchises you know as a function of returns, how do you typically look at that or is it all over the board?
Kim: Okay so the first thing I'll say is as the consultant in the process I never ever make any earnings claims to anybody right it's just not my job I'm not a business broker I don't have a license to sell a franchise so I don't get into the idea of like answering the financial questions. What I do is I teach people what are the right questions to ask I'm not a big fan of asking a business owner like how much do you make because it depends it depends on their you know what kind of tax advantages they're taking advantage of it depends on how they finance their business are they paying off loans was it cash right there's too many depends on that question but so I'm going to teach my candidates how do you really learn the financial opportunity of a business more by understanding what owners are doing when they wake up to go drive that activity right. So I want to teach them how to turn every business sort of into a sales pipeline and understand like where do I apply the gas to drive the maximum speed in this business and you want to go to the top performing franchisees in a system to really hear what they're doing. Oftentimes people out of fear will say, you know I think it's out of fear they think well I'm going to talk to the people who who it hasn't worked out for and I'm like well you know when you turn to the people who it hasn't worked out for what is that really going to teach you. When you turn to the top performing people who've mastered the model to this point in its growth they're going to have a science to what they do especially if they've been able to replicate those results year over year over year. So they can tell you logically, not emotionally, what is driving their top performance. Now if you know what's driving top performance logically then you equally know why people in your business will not be successful so very often when you talk to people who it hasn't worked out for there's a lot of emotion and opinion behind their failure that I find often times no offense to anybody who's ever lost money because it is very disheartening right if you fail in your business but oftentimes it's not the truth it's just their truth does that make sense. That's a very evasive answer to your question, that’s all you're gonna get.
Buck: Well you know we're a group of investors a lot of times we want to we kind of want to cut to the chase. And along that line you know you had you mentioned okay well you're trying to you know you lost the job you're trying to replace income. My wonderful audience we many of us are spoiled rotten, we're just looking to make more money all right it's not a sob story it's just you know how do I make more money and and you know from a tax perspective I've addressed the the idea of business ownership many times, the problem is that I've got a number of investors listeners of this podcast who are making you know multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars multi you know even multiple millions of dollars and they are interested potentially in getting involved with business because what they're doing right now is say they’re a neurosurgeon making a million and a half a year and they want they want to do something in the business space but you know what frankly they're not going to be driving to work every morning they may want to be more passive they may be interested in potentially having you know some interest in managing managers but not really beyond that, are franchises something that can be relatively passive for individuals looking to create wealth through owning businesses or is this a all hands on deck kind of thing.
Kim: It's a great question and it's definitely can be used as a semi-absentee investment unlike starting a business from scratch that entrepreneurial route which would really require the owner to be there through every stage of it. So if you invest in the right type of business that is set up for semi-absentee ownership that can be manager run that would rely on the manager's expertise to carry out the day-to-day functions rather than the owner's expertise then that that could absolutely be achieved and that's actually how you scale a business and really build that wealth you know and you'll talk to people about you really don't need experience and some for some people that feels counterintuitive and I'm like well you'll hire to the experience of the business I need you to be the CEO who can manage managers who then will work in the business while you work on the business right. So in that semi absentee investor state you might be putting in 10 to 15 hours a week at night or on the weekends and it could even be less than that. There is a highly selective group of businesses that are really more of an investor's play, they're more expensive to get into. So there's always this trade-off of money for time right so the the less time the owner would be putting in the more infrastructure there has to be to support that business right the more time you're willing to put in as the owner the lower that investment could be because you're making up for that infrastructure with your own effort and time does that make sense.
Buck: Yeah for sure like anything else I mean I think the more you know generally speaking the higher the risk you know the you're not going to pay as much and if you're looking for things that are turnkey you're going to pay more so I mean it's pretty typical stuff. Let's talk a little bit about the fact that we are in a sort of you know an unusual time you know with this whole pandemic thing I don't know if you heard about heard about it and how is it affecting you know the types of businesses that you deal with or is it all over the board? I mean I'm curious.
Kim: Yeah it's been an interesting time and you know this is again when I say like widgets don't make investors happy long term but strong leadership in a franchise does. Never has there been a better time in history and franchising than now to be looking at franchising because you can really see where there are strong cultures and and strong leadership, where franchisees are not panicking there's been a pivot in their business model to maybe a virtual platform to a delivery service. So I mean I've seen franchisors eliminate royalties and turn corporate revenue streams like through online purchases to back to their franchisees reducing royalties like all kinds of things have happened here to help save our franchisees and by the best of the best franchisors. I certainly don't speak for every franchise organization out there I imagine there are some that are really struggling and the leadership hasn't really met the demands but in my little Santa Barbara boutique world here at Franchoice which is the best of the best in franchising
Buck: Wait Santa Barbara what are you talking about I didn't know you guys were in Santa Barbara.
Kim: Hey I used to live in Boca Raton I usually use that example Boca is like the most perfectly manicured places that's sort of like what we have here in my inventory. I'm not matching people to just any franchise out there I'm matching them to the best of the best. And the best of the best as validated by their existing franchise owners like it's one thing to be ranked in the top 500 out of you know entrepreneurs top 500 but it's quite another when the majority of the franchise owners that my team would speak with say you know hey I knowing what I know a hundred percent I would do this again you know even if you're not making the kind of money you got in for and they're willing to validate that they would do it again I mean that's amazing validation right and during your due diligence process as you work with me to explore franchise opportunities to find the one that's like the best fit for you, a big portion of what we're going to do is we're going to go out and we're going to interview those existing franchise owners and that question of you know how much money does it really take to get the business going and what kind of returns are there, we're actually going to address it to the people who've invested the money and who are making the return. The franchisor by law has to disclose this information in their franchise disclosure document so the federal trade commission regulates franchising and every year a franchisor must produce what's called an FDD or a franchise disclosure document, it's kind of like the prospectus for a stock right so it entitles you the investor to full disclosure if there's ever been any lawsuits or bankruptcies any fees you're obligated to pay and in there there's a section on the initial startup cost and there's also an earnings claim section. So we can pull numbers out of that franchise disclosure document but I always try to coach my candidates to understand that a document is just that right it's not a living breathing thing that a business is. So in order to really understand the story that those numbers create we have to be in relationship with the people, we have to be out there talking to the franchisor and then taking what we're learning in that book theory from the franchisor and validating that in the real world by talking to their existing franchisees and ultimately I don't know if you're aware of this but a franchise is not yours to buy until the franchisor has offered you the opportunity. So the evaluation that you're going through it's a mutual evaluation and ultimately they say hey
Buck: Swipe left swipe.
Kim: Right we think you're qualified we want you but do you want us and at that point then it's your business to say yes or no.
Buck: Okay so I am listening to this podcast and I'm like oh gosh you know has been telling me that my W2 stuff even though I'm making a lot of money then I need to consider having some business ownership possibility this franchising sounds really interesting this Kim Daly person sounds like she knows what she's talking about. So what happens when I reach out to you and we'll talk about how to reach out to you in a minute. The person who's reaching out to you, tell us a little bit about the process that they go through with you, what that looks like, what you do in the whole process you know and then presumably to the point where you're purchasing some kind of you know where somebody's purchasing an asset.
Kim: Okay great I love that question. So the first thing I do in order to bring opportunities to someone is I have to get to know them personally, professionally and financially. Who are you and what are you looking for, what are your dreams, what are your goals, what are you going to use this business investment for? Once we've clearly identified or outlined those characteristics through a basic questionnaire and then about a one-hour consultation phone call then I get to work and I go to go do some research come back a few days later with what I believe are the top three to five options that have available territory where you would like your business to be and that match those characteristics that we've outlined together. So then I would make a high level introduction between you and the franchisors I called this my blind date right blind date round it's like speed dating you're gonna start talking to franchisors you're gonna play the field and I'm gonna become your dating coach and I'm gonna teach you how to like keep your mind open and just go with the flow and have some fun there's so many ways to make money I think that's like the most fascinating part of my business is we get trained on new concepts all the time and it's like what are they going to think of next you know. If there's a business for it there's a franchise of it and there's just so many ways to make money. So once you go through your blind date round and you kind of get your bearings and you have some thoughts and opinions about what I have found for you then we start working together to to pair this list down and then I'm going to really get into the back end coaching like how do you actually explore franchise so that you can be competent that you've asked the right questions, you've done all the right things so when you're ready to say yes or no you can feel very confident in your final decision. And I work with candidates for about one to two months I've been doing this for about 18 years and I'm very consistent around that six week mark if this is the right thing for you don't have to spend six months figuring it out, no offense but no franchisor wants to date you for six months. We want decision makers we want to you know get in there learn the information absorb it move on to the next chapter learn the information absorb it move on and then complete that process and then just say yes or no. And all of my service I should have started out with this but everything I do Buck everything I do for people it's free.
Buck: Okay because you're because you're ultimately like a you know like a real estate agent then right?
Kim: I’m like an executive recruiter like for franchising.
Buck: Right so they they pay you.
Kim: The franchisor yeah so it's free. People are like really you're not going to hit me with a backend fee? Never. I'm going to offer you all kinds of coaching but on the flip side of that, what I tell people is when they get if they get argumentative with me I'll be like, you're not paying me any money and you don't have to take any advice I'm ever going to give you right there's no reason for me to mislead you but ultimately it's your life it's your decision so I'm just here to guide you if you want my guidance but at the end of the day people are making decisions on their own.
Buck: Yeah understood. Let's talk about what goes into that. So you make the introduction but it doesn't just end up with an introduction right you mean you you're gonna do some due diligence together you're going to say well how you looking at this these are the issues that you're you know that you need to look at okay let's let's look at their uniform circular or whatever those things are called what are the things I need to look at I mean I presume all that's part of the the the process from the consulting side absolutely yep and it used to be called a uniform franchise offering circular excuse me and then it got changed to the franchise disclosure document. So you have looked at franchising before.
Buck: I told you you know I have I mean I have entrepreneurial ADD and so I've looked at anything and part of what makes me pretty good at what I do on the investing side is my you know my my desire to constantly be looking at things so yeah I have looked at very briefly I mean I've never really learned enough I've learned enough to be dangerous where I could you know I may have gone to directly to a franchise and said yeah I wonder what it would be like to own a bunch of subways and then they sent me a big you know packet which was called the uniform circular at one point and I was like yeah I'm not gonna go look through this I'm not gonna.
Kim: No I save people time I mean ultimately yes if you're going to sign a franchise agreement I think you do need to have familiarize yourself with all parts of that franchise disclosure document but that's where I come in so I'm going to help you go you know I tell people look in the beginning when you're dating multiple franchisors you want to know what's in it for you and what's in it for you is the money so we're just going to pull the money out of that FDD first and we're going to play with the money of the investment and the ROI because if that doesn't make sense you're not going to want to go any further why do you need to know how you're going to sell your business which is part of the FDD if the numbers don't make sense for you right to even want to invest in it. So that's what I do I help save people time and focus them on what's important, I'm going to teach you when it's time to go interview those franchise owners what are the questions what should I be asking we talk about the psychology of interviewing business owners because it's really important that as you're meeting people who own a business that you don't create a limiting belief for yourself about what's possible based on the people that you're meeting in the franchise right. I want to teach you again how to figure out how to drive that gas pedal to your own level of performance. It's something Buck that I did in my business here at Franchoice, I was an average performing inconsistent performing consultant for many years for the first eight years and then I decided to get serious in my business and really maximize what I could control and one year later I had built the largest franchise consulting business ever that had ever been built and so then I didn't want to be a one-hit wonder so then I really had to examine my numbers and figure out the science of what I was really doing to drive that result and then once I did that and repeated it for a couple of years a couple of other very smart consultants came to me and were like hey let me do what you do I gave them my science and now one of them goes on and doubles what I do right and now I also share this science
Buck: So this is your, you came up with this franchise? This is your franchise?
Kim: No I just jacked the level of performance in my business
Buck: So you’re like a super Mcdonald's
Kim: Yeah like let's say that let's say that you're validating a business and the average owner you're talking about is I'll use basic numbers just pulling out a hundred thousand. I don't want my candidates to feel like that's a limitation like I can only make a hundred thousand there should be no limit, I mean if you have a if you in some businesses there is an actual cap to how big one location can get and then that's why you'd have to build you know two and three and four and five locations, but that's what I'm explaining that just because the average person in a franchise is performing to a certain level that's not all that's possible, there's always going to be one person who can break free from the pack and produce twice as much or three times as much as everybody else and when you're validating a franchise I want my candidates to go to those people who've broken free from the pack the top 10 of the performers to find out what are they doing to drive that type of result rather than kind of settling for well okay the average performing person is doing this and so that's kind of the number I have in my head I just think that that's a that can be a very limiting belief to begin your business with.
Buck: Understood. Well good. What am I missing? Am I missing anything? Is there anything that you think that we ought to know about this process that we haven't already talked to? I mean obviously there's a lot to it but as an introduction.
Kim: Yeah you know one thing we haven't talked about are the tax advantages that some franchise businesses can create. So you mentioned we talked about the investor mindset and coming in more as a semi-absentee investor and I have some people that have significant cash flow from a w-2 job and they're looking for tax savings or tax shelters with the business not even necessarily cash flow in the first few years it's more to create that tax shelter and I also have businesses that fit those investors as well so you can look at franchising as replacing your w-2 job like you've been unemployed or you've been downsized or right-sized whatever and you're looking to reinvent yourself right you're 52-54 and you're like listen if I go back I may get laid off in two or three more years so maybe it's better for me to consider just reinventing myself for myself at this stage there's that guy who wants to dive in full term and full time and maybe over time become a semi-absentee owner but then there's the investors such as you mentioned like you know physicians or people that have thriving businesses that are making a lot of money but those to make that money it requires their time and attention like my business requires my time and attention so I have other passive investments that don't require Kim I'm passionate about what I do and I want to be here but you know there's some point in my life where no offense to my people but I don't always want to have to be tied to my desk in order to you know have income coming in so we all have to consider ways to build that revenue that doesn't require us to wake up and exchange our time for money right. And then so there's that investor mindset and a lot of those those investor mindset businesses also as I mentioned can come with some pretty good tax advantages for those people who again are trying to offset big income they're making in their w-2 job or other investments.
Buck: Yeah I mean you know specifically I think you know we talk a lot about tax efficiency in this this program you know a lot of people are going to be interested in I think a couple of things one is you know the potential depreciation and elements of that but also to look at these opportunities as potential passive assets and start building those buckets of passive income up that we can do a lot more with so very interesting stuff. Kim how do we get a hold of you?
Kim: Okay so my website is thedalycoach.com and that's my last name d-a-l-y the daily coach. I love to give people a little daily dose of Kim Daly on my website. I have videos I have testimonials I mean I cover all kinds of business coaching subjects in my video library I have testimonials where I've gone into the storefronts of people that I've helped change their life and some of the work I'm the most proud of, I love all of my people to death so I ask everybody even those people who didn't buy a franchise but they learned something through my process write me a testimonial. So you'll see hundreds of testimonials and all kinds of you know resources books and other things that you may want to check out and also the contact me form so if you are interested in starting your journey how do you know you're curious you want to learn more about franchising absolutely I'll follow right back up with you and we can begin the conversation.
Buck: Fantastic again that's thedalycoach.com and Kim thank you so much this has been a fantastic interview. I think we've got a lot of information here and hopefully some of you are going to go down this road. I may take Kim up on this and go down through the process myself by the way so I'm totally curious and you know me I'm gonna you know I've got my fingers in a lot of different things. So anyway Kim thanks again. Wonderful to have you on the show.
Kim: It's an honor to be here. Thank you so much.
Buck: We'll be right back

2020.09.28 08:27 AnonPoly1975 Poly Advise - Is it right for us/me?

Hi All,
This seems like a very "safe" community - So seeking views/advice. :)
I (44M - Australian) am currently married (going on 11 years), but separated with my wife (41F - Chinese Descent) for the last 4 years. She came from a very conservative family and both her views on relationships as well as marriage are very much built upon the conservative Asian family traditions, where I've come from a very loving, but divorced parents upbringing. Marriage for me was more a sign of commitment, love and desire, but for her, its more been "this is what society/parents/friends expect"
When we were living together, it become apparent that there were some major differences between us. I was not feeling emotionally fulfilled, had resentment towards her. I was constantly moody, and would snap at the most inconsequential things. We tried the whole marriage counseling, but her view was "why would i want to share my feelings with a stranger" so that didn't really work out.
I relate a lot to the love languages theory, and yes - we are at different ends of the spectrum there. I am definitely on the Physical Touch for Receiving and Words of Affirmation for giving. I believe she is Acts of Service for Receiving and Quality Time for giving. (I'm also a senior executive in a MNC - Time is always a challenge with my career). I believe my wife is almost asexual. She once told me "as a wife, its my duty to have sex with you" (and that hurt a LOT). She never initiates and despite me sharing my love languages she doesn't really act on it. I felt very empty and almost "used" in my marriage at that point.
After 7 years of trying to find a happy medium, I moved out on new years day. We have spoken about divorce and where to go, but I'm confident that's not what I want and she has said the same. I do love her, I care for her immensely and we have two boys who my whole life revolves around. I spend weekends back at my old place with her and the boys, and I spend a few nights each weekday over at my old place as well.
Mentally/Emotionally - I've been doing better. I no longer have the extreme mood swings, I actually miss my family and prioritize my time with them, and I'm generally happier, but still feel empty relationship wise. Unfortunately, despite sleeping in the same bed - Its become a bit of a dead bedroom there. Sex still happens, but its rare and "robotic" - Not much romance around it.
The challenge I've had over the last few years has been missing the companionship/intimacy aspects. I've had a few casual hookups and FWB but they have not really been fulfilling for me. I've had feelings of emptiness and remorse after those. I've considered dating, but where I'm at with regards to my wife - Its not fair on anybody I date, so I tend to close down any potential relationship just because I don't know if I can emotionally commit to something that may be fleeting.
Now, here is the kicker - Earlier this year - My friend introduced me to sugar dating. It appealed to me as it can be very honest and upfront regarding expectations and boundaries, and due to the nature of it, its "temporary" so I would never feel committed from a long term. (I know social media might depict it as sex work or whatnot - But seeing the sugar relationship my friend had - A strong emotional connection and they would have very normal dates - Dinners/Activities/Drinks etc)
I meet a girl, and we clicked well, agreed on our boundaries and expectations, I understood her motivations and she understood mine. We agreed to be non-exclusive, and a bit of a "dont ask/dont tell" around our outside dating. This started just as Covid was emerging and maybe 6 weeks into our relationship - The lock-downs started. Up-to that point, it had been a very carefree relationship, we were both out to just have fun and enjoy the good times. There was a sense of caring, but it wasn't deep. The Lockdown actually took us in a very unexpected direction. Not being able to meet up for almost 2 months, we chatted a *LOT* virtually. Really developed a deep bond with each other and got to know each other on a much deeper level. By the end of the lockdown we were both gushing over each other and our friends had to keep telling us to shutup about each other.
Since the Lockdowns lifted, we are back to hanging out together. The Intimacy (not just sex - Emotional as well) is off the charts, and we both have said how unexpected, but cool that our relationship has developed along such a dynamic. But she has continued to date others during the time as well. She is also seeking someone she could have a future with and was transparent about that from the start with me.
Recently I hit a bit of a rough spot with a few events in my sugar girlfriend life (her dating life went "its complicated" in a big way) and we almost broke it off, but things have worked out in my favor now, and we have agreed to try being exclusive and have a bit more of a vanilla relationship over the next few months and see how things go. I just spent the weekend with her after this discussion, and I'm on such a high at the moment with her.
Now, despite this - my relationship with my wife and family is improving as well. Not in a romantic way, but I'm happier, I'm more engaged with them and I can spend more time with them without feeling crowded or my social battery is empty. I still care for my wife, and find myself wishing at times how I was I could share with her how this person is filling voids and making me feel "whole"
I think my wife sees this as well, and has recently asked about me moving back home, and honestly, I'm scared I'll go back to my old self and things will just deteriorate again.
I've been reading up a bit on Polyamory, and it appears very complex relationship dynamic but I relate to a few things I read here. But I'm not sure if I'm just being a arsehole and wanting the cake and eat it too. I feel my wife fulfills aspects of my life that I want/need, but so does my sugar girlfriend. I am at the point where I think if I don't have another partner that can fulfill some of these needs/wants I have, then my marriage will ultimately fail, but also dating someone with a big Age Gap isn't a permanent thing either, so this may be a fleeting feeling. If I could find a agreement with my wife, the idea of finding someone else who can fill those gaps I have (like my Sugar does right now) on a more longer term basis sounds exciting (Not ruling out a LTR with my sugar - Just trying to be real!)
I guess I'm asking for advise - how should I communicate this to my wife - without showing disrespect for our marriage (and her monogamy beliefs) but also stressing that I think we are getting to the point where we have to do something different (doing the same thing and expecting different results and all that train of thought). I want to be transparent about this with her, don't want to do it behind her back and give her the comfort or assurances that she would be my "primary" partner (i think thats the term).
Or am I dreaming? If she doesn't relate to Polyamory, is this going to fail with Jealousy and feelings of neglect etc?

2020.09.28 07:04 wicketkeeper Wheeling Question: Hoping to get assigned prior to the EX-Dividend date. Not sure what expiry is the best

Hello All, Have a basic question, if I am looking to buy stocks near the market price prior to the EX-Dividend date shall I sell CSP close to Market price as far expiry as I can buy with the highest possible premium? Does getting assigned is controlled by the buyer of the Put option or can I also execute it? Here, my intention is to get assigned as if I would be buying any stock at market price.
For example, AT&T has a possible EX-Dividend date of 10/08/2020. The current stock price is $28.04, I am thinking of selling CSP lets say at $28.00 strike price. Now I am not sure which expiry should I select? Should I select my expiry date near to my EX-Dividend date i.e. 10/9 or a little bit far out with a higher premium like 40 days out on Nov 6 or can I go bonkers and sell 845 days out with the highest possible premium and hope I will get assigned prior to 10/08.

What are the downsides that I am not looking at? Here are a few that I think of:
a) If option buyer has the right to exercise the Puts, then I lose the control and I am blocking my cash that as security until that person exercise.
b) with all CSP inherent risk is that the stock goes down way beyond by my purchasing price and having a loss.
c) it never reaches near my sold puts strike price and I just keep the premium.

2020.09.28 06:58 jocker12 No easy answers in Uber driver's case - "They left her alone in the vehicle to monitor it all by herself," Hinkle said. "It doesn't absolve her of responsibility in any way, but it clearly implicates Uber in the crash."

https://www.autonews.com/mobility-report/no-easy-answers-uber-drivers-case - Paywall
Rafaela Vasquez was watching "The Voice" instead of watching the road. That much is clear.
Exactly what punishment, if any, she should receive in a fatal collision between an Uber self-driving test vehicle and a pedestrian in Tempe, Ariz., remains vexing, according to experts.
The answer could have profound implications for the way companies develop driver-assist systems and self-driving vehicles, as well as for interpretations of who or what is considered a vehicle operator. And it could set precedents for how America's criminal justice system handles cases involving emerging transportation technology.
And it could send Vasquez to jail.
She was the human safety driver Uber employed to oversee the self- driving test car that struck and killed Elaine Herzberg the night of March 18, 2018. An investigation revealed Vasquez had been looking downward watching "The Voice" TV show on a phone before impact.
In late August, a grand jury returned a felony count of criminally negligent homicide against Vasquez, now 46. She has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, she faces four to eight years in prison.
"That a charge would come two and a half years later is something of a surprise," said Jesse Halfon, an attorney in the automotive and products liability practice at law firm Dykema. "But I understand why a prosecutor would feel the need to bring some accountability for a fatality, which I think we'd agree was avoidable, regardless of who we want to place the blame on."
Courts have addressed distracted driving, and that's the lens through which the Maricopa County Attorney's Office framed the charge against Vasquez.
"When a driver gets behind the wheel of a car, they have a responsibility to control and operate that vehicle safely and in a law-abiding manner," said County Attorney Allister Adel.
But Herzberg's death is the first involving the testing of self-driving technology, and this case is the first of its kind. Because of the wealth of data available and the nature of the testing at the time of the crash, this is no ordinary distracted-driving case.
"So many things went wrong here, and the technology is what complicates it," said Gail Gottehrer, an attorney who specializes in law surrounding emerging technologies. "If this goes forward, it will make precedent."
Complacency and crumple zones
A jury might recoil at the extended nature of Vasquez's distraction — she gazed downward 23 times in the three minutes preceding the crash. Video from an inward-facing camera may be damning with a jury.
But those factors generate mixed feelings. Some experts say it's inherently difficult for humans to monitor automated systems and that "automation complacency," a phenomenon that invites inattention from people who are supposed to ensure machines work as intended, set Vasquez up for failure.
"I'm somewhat sympathetic to Ms. Vasquez because I have some understanding of how challenging this job is and, in some ways, how inevitable these kinds of cases are, whether it's Tesla Autopilot or GM Super Cruise or a self-driving Uber," Halfon said.
Whether because of automation complacency or other reasons, humans often bear the brunt of the blame when machines malfunction. A research paper by Madeleine Elish coined the phrase "moral crumple zone" to describe the way humans are assigned moral and legal responsibilities from these system problems. Look no further than the two fatal Boeing 737 MAX aircraft crashes in 2018 and 2019 to see the inclination to blame the pilots.
"There were initial attempts to say those were pilot error and that the pilots failed to understand the way the system worked, or they failed to respond appropriately," said Daniel Hinkle, senior state affairs counsel for the American Association of Justice. " 'Moral crumple zone' is almost too abstract. When you are designing your system to ensure a human is there to absorb responsibility, it's a human crumple zone."
Important distinctions exist in the Tempe crash. It involved a self-driving vehicle, but it was only a test vehicle. It required human oversight.
An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, the federal agency charged with probing notable crashes, concluded the probable cause of the crash was Vasquez's failure to monitor the road ahead. But the board also cited Uber's safety culture and automation complacency as contributors. How those conclusions are treated by a jury will be a key question.
"It's persuasive in that this is the finding of a high-level government agency," Gottehrer said. "But just because the NTSB determined a probable cause, that's not the same as the burden of proof needed to establish liability or criminal or civil culpability. ... If you are telling a jury someone is criminally negligent, the question is, 'Did they fall below the reasonable-care standards we'd expect from a safety driver?' And that's a whole new concept right there."
So is the concept of an automated driver. Though NHTSA issued an interpretation in 2015 that stipulated a self-driving system could be considered the driver of a vehicle, Arizona law considers a driver to be the person sitting behind the wheel.
Legal precedent suggests there can be co-operators of vehicles, stemming from unusual cases, such as one in which one person was pushing a stalled vehicle while another steered. But in this matter, a prosecutor's office has already absolved Uber of criminal liability. (The company reached a civil settlement with Herzberg's family, the details of which are undisclosed).
That's troublesome, Hinkle suggests, because Uber had disconnected two safety systems: The factory-installed City Safety auto-brake system supplied by Volvo and an internal fail-safe developed by Uber called Reflex. Further, the company had decreased the number of human safety drivers in its test vehicles from two to one, a move that eliminated another safeguard.
"They left her alone in the vehicle to monitor it all by herself," Hinkle said. "It doesn't absolve her of responsibility in any way, but it clearly implicates Uber in the crash."
Uber's role still relevant
Lawyers say prosecuting corporations on criminal counts is notoriously difficult and that the U.S. justice system is tailored to compensate victims of corporate neglect in civil courts. But there are two issues they find problematic with the way Uber's role in the Tempe crash has been examined.
Citing a conflict of interest because it had conducted an anti-drunken driving campaign with Uber, the Maricopa County Attorney's Office transferred its investigation to neighboring Yavapi County, which subsequently cleared Uber of criminal wrongdoing.
But the criminal case against Vasquez is being adjudicated in Maricopa County — raising the question why the conflict of interest would not apply to Vasquez, the company's employee, as well.
Separately, they find it concerning that a low-level employee is shouldering criminal responsibility.
In criminal cases involving potential corporate misdeeds, they argue, it's senior-level executives who should be charged, noting the conviction of former Volkswagen executive Oliver Schmidt for his role in the diesel emissions scandal.
Though Uber has been criminally cleared, the company's role may nonetheless give a jury qualms about convicting Vasquez.
"In criminal law, someone can be shot with a machine gun 12 times, but if they still have a breath left and you push them off a cliff, the shooter and pusher could both be prosecuted," Halfon said.
"On a purely legal basis, it doesn't get Vasquez off the hook. But with a jury, it might make her more sympathetic than you might think."
CHRONOLOGY OF KEY DEVELOPMENTS
Key dates involving the Uber crash in Tempe, Ariz., and subsequent felony charge against safety driver Rafaela Vasquez:
March 18, 2018: An Uber self-driving test vehicle, with Vasquez as safety driver, strikes and kills Elaine Herzberg.
March 28, 2018: Uber reaches a civil settlement with Herzberg's family. Details remain undisclosed.
March 4, 2019: The Yavapi County Attorney's Office determines there is "no basis for criminal liability for the Uber corporation" related to the crash.
Nov. 19, 2019: The National Transportation Safety Board says Vasquez's distracted driving was the probable cause of the crash. It lists Uber's "inadequate safety culture" as a contributing factor.
Aug. 27, 2020: A grand jury convened in Maricopa County returns a felony charge of negligent homicide against Vasquez. Vasquez later pleads not guilty.
Oct. 27, 2020: An initial pretrial conference is scheduled in Maricopa County Superior Court.
Feb. 11, 2021: Tentative trial date.

2020.09.28 05:16 x05595113 Poor Man's Covered Call

Poor Man's Covered Call
The Poor Man's Covered Call (PMCC) is an approach to synthetically create a covered call position. It is a type of diagonal spread (note: you need to have option trading tier to sell spreads). There are several great video online that discuss the mechanics of a PMCC. In this post, I want to discuss a PMCC on a penny stock which I might try to execute this week.
Disclaimer: per usual, I'm just some random person on the interest. I am not a financial advisor. This post discusses my thought process on a PMCC position that I might open. It is not a recommendation for you to execute nor is it an endorsement of the underlying. Do your own homework for your fiscal decisions!
The stock that I am considering DGLY - yes that one! But the option chain looks good for the PMCC....
What is a PMCC? It is a spread that consists of a long ITM call and a short OTM call. The long call will have a later expiration date than the short call. This spread is a debit spread. This spread synthetically acts like a covered call where the long ITM call represents the shares. The general idea is to purchase the ITM call and collect premium by selling OTM calls. If the stock price rises above your short strike, then you can exercise your long call to have shares to cover the assignment on the short call.
On 9/25, DGLY closed at $2.23. The DGLY options chain has four expiration months: 10/16/20, 1120/20, 2/19/21, and 5/21/21. I will not consider the LEAPs as there do not have much volume.
We need an ITM call so we consider the Feb 2021 or May 2021 expiration. The following table shows the bid/ask for each strike along with the last traded price.
Expiration Strike bid ask last
2/19/21 $0.5 1.65 1.90 1.85
$1.0 0.95 2.50 1.20
$1.5 0.95 1.20 1.10
$2.0 0.70 1.00 0.85
5/21/21 $0.5 1.45 2.00 -
$1.0 0.90 1.65 1.26
$1.5 0.60 1.40 -
$2.0 0.90 1.40 0.95
Given the wide bid/ask spread, I will use the last traded price as an approximate for the cost. Notice that the premium for a strike in May is about $0.05 -$0.10 more than the premium for the same strike in February. Thus, we will select the May 2021 expiration - the extra $10/contract will give us an additional 3 months for the position to work.
I am leaning towards selecting the $1 strike with a cost of about $1.26. This premium would set my cost basis at $2.26 which is fairly close to the current share price of DGLY. There are 236 DTE for the May 2021 expiration.
Next we need an OTM call to sell. The following table has the option chain for this month's expiration. The idea will be to sell a call and then roll to the next expiration. We will continue this process until we are assigned or until we reach the expiration month of the long call option. With a May 2021 long call expiration, we will have 8 opportunities to collect premium. With a cost basis of $2.26, we consider the four strike above this value:
Expiration Strike bid ask last
10/16/20 $2.5 0.25 0.30 0.28
$3.0 0.15 0.20 0.18
$3.5 0.10 0.15 0.13
$4.0 0.10 0.15 0.13
For consideration of the short strike, we will use the bid value as this is the worse case premium we could receive. Also, since the $3.50 and $4 strikes have the same premium, then will only consider the $4 strike.
How do we decide? Let's consider the profit/loss plots of this spread. It is actually impossible to deterministically plot the P/L chart since we have two expiration dates. Online resources use curved lines to represent this fact. I am displaying the P/L at the time of the short call expiration - this is 'okay' for me as this plot represents the worst case scenario because I can always roll the short call to the next expiration. The effect of the rolling will improve my position by collecting additional premium for credit.
PMCC Short Call Strike Selection Figure
There is a lot going on with this figure - but it is informative to see all of the information at once. Let's break it down. The horizontal axis is the DGLY share price.
There are three vertical axes represented in the figure:
  • The left vertical axis corresponds to the expected share price movement until the short call (Oct) expiration depicted by the blue hatch area. The vertical dimension is the days to expiration; 0 to 19. The blue line shows the one standard deviation movement from the current price of $2.23 based on the implied volatility of the October call option. This shows us the range of share price values to expect on 10/16/2020.
  • The far-right vertical axis corresponds to the expected share price movement until the long call (May) expiration depicted by the red hatch area. The vertical dimension is the days to expiration; 0 to 236. The red line shows the one standard deviation movement from the current price of $2.23 based on the implied volatility of the May call option. This shows us the range of share price values to expect on 5/21/21.
  • The near-right vertical axis corresponds to the profit/loss of the position. The values are shown per share. We have three PMCC positions that we are considering based on the three short call strikes that we are considering. Notice that the shape of the P/L is similar to the covered call P/L diagram as the share prices increases. The difference is when the share price drops. A covered call can continue to lose value as the share price decreases - due to the fact that you are long the shares. Whereas a PMCC achieves the maximum loss at the opening debit to purchase the long call option.
The choice on the short call strike depends on the outlook of the underlying. If we are considering a stable, blue-chip stock, then we might want to consider a far OTM strike in the hope that the share price rises significantly. However, we are considering a penny stock with uncertain (if any) future catalyst. Therefore, I want to try to squeeze as much premium as possible while hopefully the share price rises above my short strike. This removes the $4 strike from consideration.
My choice is between the $2.5 strike ($0.25 premium, $1.01 cost basis) or the $3 strike ($0.15 premium, $1.11 cost basis). These strikes correspond to a return on capital of 250% and 270%, respectively, if the short strike is ITM at expiration. If DGLY is going to increase in share price by 10/16, then obviously it would have to cross the $2.5 strike prior to the $3 strike. According to our plot, the extent of the expect DGLY price movement has $3 within reach. However, the gain in return on capital is not significant which points toward the $2.5 strike.
I will look at the pre-market movement (if any) and see if these numbers still make sense. Hopefully this post helped you understand the Poor Man's Covered Call position. There may be opportunities to applied to penny stocks. Like always ask questions, comments and improve this post through discussion.

2020.09.28 05:05 adhdscapegoat i (21f) realized my best friend (20f) of 5 years is a shitty person...and i don’t have the energy to end the friendship

hi askwomenadvice! this is my throwaway, and i’m keeping this intentionally vague due to some pretty specific details. this is gonna be L O N G, so please bear with me!
so i’ve been friends with G (20f) for 5 years, but we met in high school in the early 2010s. we quickly became close due to a lot of similar traits and the same sense of humor, as well as both wanting to go into the same field after high school.
G and i, however, are in wildly different places, regardless of mentally, physically, emotionally, etc. she is much better off financially than i am, whereas i come from a solidly middle class family living in an area with a high cost of living. i also have a rare genetic condition (estimated to occur in .02% of the population) that causes a LOT of comorbid health problems, and when they flare up, it HAS to consume my life if i want the flareup to end. G’s family pays for her (expensive) college across the country, and i’m taking out loans for a fairly cheap state school. i also have moderate to severe ADHD, and if i don’t take my adderall daily, it’s hard for me to function—i lack executive function in most areas of my life while unmedicated, which basically allows you to make decisions and initiate tasks.
so now onto the current stuff: i moved in with my girlfriend A (21f) three weeks ago. we’ve been dating for a little over a year, and i just adore her to pieces. it’s been going well so far in terms of the relationship! however, the rest of the move was pretty stressful.
for starters, i helped my sister moved to a new state for her first year of college, about a week before i moved. during my move, i got pinkeye (somehow?) and due to telehealth, doctors thought it might be covid, which was especially concerning since i’m high risk. i also started experiencing side effects to my birth control, as well as some other conditions flaring up that cause IMMENSE amounts of pain on their own, let alone together.
my dad (parents are separated) is also moving across the state today, and having to help pack and plan for that on top of my own move was pretty stressful too. saying goodbye to the family dog was especially sad :(
prior to all this, G had told me that she understood the situation i was in (neither of us expecting the health problems to flare up), and that i could take my time during my transition. we normally text pretty much daily, and it was weird for us to even go a few hours without one sending the other a meme. obviously i appreciated her understanding, and it did in fact make it easier to move without having to worry about texting people back.
during my flareup that caused some intense pain, i basically entered survival mode. i wasn’t texting anyone at all, and was showing up to my zoom lectures simply for the attendance—i couldn’t tell you what they were about. i did check in with her the weekend after when i was feeling better, and it seemed to go well.
to make a long story short, G and i ended up having a couple conversations this week about how she felt ghosted after not hearing from me, which i understand. however, even once i explained what had happened, she was still not super understanding, and i quickly got brushed off.
she basically said that she was SO stressed and tired from her zoom classes that she just didn’t have the energy to reach out to me, which again i understand. her main thing was that i didn’t reach out while knowing she was going through a rough time.
i brought up the point that every time she’s gone thru something, i’ve been there and at least checked in with her. i explained the health flareup to her, and said that yes, it would have been nice if i checked in, but i wasn’t in a spot where i could process that kind of thinking. i asked her if she considered that my health problems played a factor, and she said that she honestly had forgotten i even had any.
now, that’s what got me thinking. i don’t expect anyone to know exactly what conditions i have—not even my girlfriend or my family. knowing that i have some that impact my life is something that i think is reasonable. but saying that you forgot about something that even impacts whether or not i can get dressed that day feels very...dismissive and thoughtless.
since then, i’ve been reevaluating her behavior over the past few years, and i’m noticing a lot of behavior pop up that frankly, i don’t deserve. there’s a lot, but a few examples:
• she always manages to reroute the conversation to herself and her attractiveness/her boyfriend/her money/her “elite” university/etc
• she can almost never admit when she’s wrong, even when brought up to her
• she’s so infuriatingly close to being self aware it’s almost painful
• she constantly voices her opinion, even when it’s not necessary or relevant to her experience
• she has been blowing me off lately prior to the move, to the point that it seems like sabotage, and has clearly stopped putting in as much effort with the friendship
i know i need to end the friendship. i just feel irritated and annoyed, and frankly don’t want to put any energy into this. she’s just getting on my nerves at this point, and i feel apathetic about this friendship at best.
thing is, i don’t want this to be a whole Thing, and i don’t think it needs to be. where do i go from here? how much do i explain?
TLDR: my best friend forgot about my rare genetic condition, and this made me realize shitty past behaviors of hers. i no longer want to put effort into the friendship, and feel like i don’t have the energy to end it.

2020.09.28 04:44 MannyTrejo 'Which media would you consider a life-changing experience?'

Originally inspired by a Reddit thread regarding media and how it changed our lives, I invite anyone interested in sharing that which caused them reflection or provided lessons that later proved relevant to do the same. I since expanded that far beyond the limitations of Reddit comments here: https://www.facebook.com/notes/manuel-ignacio-mier-aguirre/which-media-would-you-consider-a-life-changing-experience/129415288891059/
"Lest I forget to mention my own failure from following the same route despite The Wall by Pink Floyd being one of the pieces of audiovisual media I’ve most watched throughout my lifetime. My younger brother had perhaps already built The Wall within himself, by his own failures whether born from his use of worse substances than any I’d dare ever consume during our adolescence, or facing other trials lacking my or another’s wisdom I neglected to share distracted by other substances and my own failures to retreat and regroup effectively to tackle the problem I’d faced after being denied so many other paths I’d have chosen before the one I’m on. For months he’d pestered me with radical propaganda and politically-sensitive philosophy over topics I’d already come to terms with, and I left that vector of intrusion open feeling concern for his plight and worry, yet after a former amorous connection from abroad offered we meet in Spain, he revealed my folly for trusting in him and his true intention. Immediately after she had so offered we might meet, I was faced with threats by my brother and friends of his intimidating me, attempting to coerce me into accepting Catholicism with claims of violence should I not, falsely accusing me of being guilty of sin worthy of such punishment which left me perplexed.
Confused at the true source of the attack, the disrespect against me caused me to lose my respect usually shown to just about everyone else hoping to incite reprisal from the source, and I do apologize for any offenses made as brick by brick I built The Wall. And just as I built The Wall despite consuming that media many a time, another book I was reading at the time, Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon held the answer for the paranoia I'd came to suffer upon detecting Maoism to be the potential source yet lacking knowledge of Maoist movements beyond Chairman Mao Zedong's history in China, “If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to worry about answers.” And so, though I still disagree with some actions taken, yet have come to understand better why and decided to simply not even worry about them, only concerned the same doesn't repeat itself here against good people like myself, I do apologize for any offense to the states of China and Russia, and others closer-by but not former President Calderone, because fuck you I’m not going to die in a revolution for your rightwing Catholic oligarchy against leftist Catholic oligarchs, but I’m above the idea of bothering to waste my time dealing with you. You'll get your apology for my public denouncement of your foolish words, whether read by you or any of yours or not, when you rescind them apologetically for your desire to see violence while remaining safely away from it, or when you cross that border to be the point of the lance rifle in your own Catholic hands, where I would perhaps follow you if only out of curiosity to how this turn of events concludes, since already two American military veterans I believe better men than you have been jailed in Venezuela for one of your two desired revolutions. But if things fall to that state anyway, show us if you felt even a mote of that which did help form my soul as I lived in the United States living safely as a citizen of Texas, where I was kicked out just shy of graduating high school as I'd begun cardio training to meet USMC physical requirements eager to help fight religious extremism, deported despite having committed no crime myself, the only minor act of vandalism and offending a friend as a 13 year old dealing with emotional turmoil over new found desires leading me to egg an ex-girlfriend's house, issues I've long matured from since. Please, be our revolutionary George Washington to lead us across a Delaware that never freezes to sneak up on the paramilitary privateers. And I'd accept your apology, since 2020 and the pandemic has left many of us feeling our worlds become smaller and turned irater for it, some with too much time to think, others left to deal with the stress of keeping society running for the rest. Knowing the true enemy likely to be local organized crime, since even some IP addresses that attempted to penetrate some of my accounts purportedly from those nations may have actually been masked by a proxy. just like a virus the June of 2019 which left me having to reformat 2 hard drives and a few USB sticks had changed my browser language to Russian. Not only that, but immediately following my report online to an internationally active police agency my Twitch stream was restreamed to one with a name hostile to law enforcement I reported upon discovery, as an attempt to commit something akin to Swatting against me. Yet I'll withhold from claiming academic, private, or state collusion with organized mafiosos with cyber-crime capabilities akin to the Cali Cartel that succeeded the Medellin Cartel of Columbia, more successful for their more subtle manipulation and corruption of public or private officials compared to the previous cartel's foolishly brazen suppression turned outright war to maintain control, I learned another potential true enemy aside from organized crime I’d always defied and neglected to join despite my minor irregular moderate drug use was French Maoism of the cause the leader was claimed to represent by his peons, but not the nation of France, for French Maoists have also been involved with religious extremism and Maoist terrorism in India and have been deported from India for colluding with violent radical groups, or perhaps both of us as leftists were just turned against each other for looking upon the other through a scanner darkly, and not seeing eye to eye to converse over the same worries.
For even that same amorous connection I came to blame, to accuse with thoughts born of paranoia, to claim her in-collusion with Cambridge Analytica, the case closing up the same month she offered we meet, to claim her the Spanish, to have selected to influence a man into pacifism against soft imperialism through his favorite book, a historical fiction and science fiction novel, after noticing his household’s peculiar Amazon book orders. To claim her nation, among the highest consumers of Latin American cocaine, which she shuns as she does all drug use, yet claiming her through that exchange to be but in-collusion to England’s latest mind control plot after having Cambridge Analytica and its ploys to manipulate public perception through social media and psychological profiling facilitated by artificial intelligence shut down. A scheme reminiscent of England’s control over Chinese slave labor in the 1800’s, where the East India Company would impose opium addiction upon Chinese workers then offer to only pay them with opium and not any currency for their hard labor, but inversed, to better control the flow of cocaine even given to race dog Great Danes yet claiming the source guilty of that few among their populace buy gratuitously. To claim like when the Jews were thrust just having faced the horrors of the Holocaust into their ancestral birth lands to face enemies Great Britain had angered leaving them advisors and equipment left over from the Second World War to make of a colony they could hardly defend themselves, a potential ally should they survive, which they did yet I'll not be twisted against enemies deceived into thinking me 'the rich,' not look upon you so kindly should I survive them in a manner so valiantly to be like Israel continues to stand proudly today. Knowing my fate then would be more like Alan Turing's, a homosexual man vital to the war effort against Third Reich Germany for being a grand mathematician, to be chemically castrated after I'd stopped being useful same as she no longer invited me to share my physical desire for her and hers immediately vanished when I lost my cool and became irate, no longer a source of tranquility for her and words of praise for her that would once leave a flustered woman telling me I should write romance novels. And so, a tribe from which the man Jesus Christ of Nazareth hailed, after over two thousand years of being run from place to place to take up whatever jobs were allowed to them, even chancing upon banking out of luck the Christians of Europe didn’t like math because it was hard and allowed the poorer among them to see harsher truths when analyzing the statistics, till finally they should take up the sword to defend their ancestral home and never again be run from anywhere; A warrior empire tribe along the Southwest coast of Mexico was coaxed into shedding the obsidian by the book inspired by the man Jesus Christ, or the many he represents impaled upon the cross, perhaps of the last ones unconquered, an Atheist of mixed race, to be pacified by only a more elaborate science fiction tale and love for a woman. Till she recanted such offer we meet finally after 7 years, and only recently could we reconcile, yet despite her insistence we remain friends, I did feel best we cut the cord so I may better move on, and only did plead she remain open to perhaps making another plan for Spain should I successfully progress from the current pit I’d been led into and allowed myself to be fooled into. Still I’m glad we could speak face to face to quell my paranoid fears, and to once-more blaspheme as she’d coaxed me into joining her in a chant of ‘Fuck God,’ now relieved that perhaps my worse fear of criminal mafia-state collusion to replace me in her life and the potential political and economic plans I had entertained for our relationship was perhaps excessive, lest it be proven true by exactly that happening, by a criminal or someone preferred by a criminal for their ignorance or silence seeing the same but knowing me being innocent of complicit complacency or action with crime being a risk since I’m also prone to pointing out other’s acts of violent or abusive crime against women and vulnerable people such as children and the mentally ill like myself.
And I forgave her as she revealed to me how powerless she’d felt to make me feel better, to calm me, to divert the topic as I remained ragefully fixated with a vindictive appetite, leading to her not communicating sooner out of fear I’d simply bite a hand that would once caress me again. And she forgave me, but wisely made clear it shall not be forgotten, properly since another act to a former lover nearby also caused that shock with reality and reflection I required to ease myself out of a self-indoctrination born out of my own psychological and philosophical knowledge fused with theology, not structured to a title, but ample enough to do such. When I, knowing the threat against my potentially demanded by a French Maoist, with no relation to Chinese Maoism as I’d learned, if it was indeed a Maoist and not a criminal using the name as a mask, since even FARC was a criminal organization despite noble leftist intent twisted towards violence for financing through drug sales, responded to a younger lover’s claims and desires to accept offers from a French man she’d met before to leave for France prior to finishing her preparatory education. Where I feared like many woman with their education disrupted here often are, she would be prostituted abroad, yet I neglected the fact the same crime is committed to others here in Mexico by Mexicans, not just foreigners, still her tears and angered accusations of me a Nazi and a patan after I’d answered to her it was her Patriotic duty to remain and finish at least her preparatory education caused me to reflect upon my value of Liberty, and that I shall not become a hypocrite, by denying another their liberty. Another book, The Life and Death of Socrates, reflected upon concerning this, where Socrates was made to commit suicide for espousing the societal values of religion yet denying the fantasy such supernatural beings exist leading to accusations of perverting the youth, I found myself in another similar position as an Atheist also espousing rule of law yet wishing for some minor changes to it, in a place where power has corrupted rule of law and institutions academic, private, and public at many levels in some places, despite the current administration’s efforts to cleanse this and make of Mexico a changed place, still ongoing some chancing upon the PRI’s collusion being revealed to take their place or so I believe, likely without the upper administration noticing nor allowing this yet the executive power that is the Mexican eagle and the institutions of police and military might has too often come to be ensnared by many coiled snakes about its talons as it struggles to snap at them with a tired beak one by one.
I've since fixed the security errors that made past cyber-attacks against me possible, fearing our personal data to have been intruded, to laugh off the attempts to brute force into my Outlook account knowing the attempts require a second device to authenticate log-on, after months spent seeding misleading details as a joke and hope to call the attention of more eyes to this direction, still the grandest joke remains one played upon myself, as many were acts of disrespect I'd not have committed if I'd known with clearer mind I'd still be around months later, and not enslaved an indoctrinated drone to poorly paid farm labor for the foreseeable future. Thinking myself so clever for claiming falsely to be a Nazi and adopting ideals from another National Socialist movement that founded a sovereign nation and its ascent to increased geopolitical influence, crafting a narrative born not just of conscious negation of another side to it, but also my perceptual barriers lacking sympathy to the Catholic church particularly when threatened by Catholic Extremists, till recently I shamefully learned that the Polish Catholics whom shared the Jews plight against the Nazis were more than few I'd known of, but to be in-actuality in at least the tens of thousands to have perished alongside other political dissidents in concentration camps in a manner I'd never allow repeated here, the number of official Polish Catholic clergy slain by the Nazis, aptly the same number as the year of my birth dated anno domini after the life of Christ, 1992. Still the only Abrahamic religion I'll accept, should an offer be enticing to join them, or I face such desperation potentially with another lapse of mental illness not wishing to return to my own tailored self-indoctrination since it just made me more enraged and insane designed to take advantage of recently onset psychosis to negate the possibility of someone else indoctrinating me into Christianity, shall be Judaism. Till then, I'll remain a Taoist, and a Humanist Atheist, with some ideals adopted from the Sikh and their belief that all Gods are real if only in how they affect the minds of my potential enemies should they not turn friends, or leave me be, and my own, perhaps will remain a Taoist Atheist till I die. I’ll never again make such stupid insensitive jokes till now uncharacteristic of me since maturing beyond adolescence, now that I’ve got my better mind mostly back despite some damage leaving me with a difficulty to focus on arithmetic and programming, I was making strides of progress previously unseen towards last year before all these events spiked my mental health problems that have been usually more subtle since preadolescence. My intent was to claim myself one to incite the group that threatened me to act on their claims, then reveal that eugenicists, as that cause claimed, even attempted to persuade me towards, are indeed Nazis.
Ha-ha, look, its Dr. Sun Yat-sen but with a 16 year old companion in a state 16 is age of consent compared to one of the real man of past history, however appropriate it was at that time and place and not now, and his 13 year old wife, its Adolf Hitler but not a hypocrite since his ultra-nationalism did not become corroded by racism, to be a defense for the rights of Mexicans of every color and religion, its Cobra Commander as a playful reference to a bisexuality and sexual experience yet to be entirely completed, the former I've had to abandon, preferring women where most places that would embrace it immediately find me with many men encroaching upon my space where I'd father few if any, preferably only those ruder, meaner, more muscular, and bearded much like myself. I prefer sexual fluidity theory, so I can lie to everyone and uninviting homosexuals claiming myself heterosexual, and perhaps reveal that to the right homosexual that could fulfill either my dreams of a Francis Bacon the painter's physically abusive relationship, knowing the violence just fantasy better treated, or an older guide and tutor much like Ancient Greek apprenticeship was to some young men, the penetration of knowledge connected to physical act, to be taken as I would a woman since male bodies don't excite my member yet I'd not shy from another's desires aided by a woman's presence or chemical assistance, and always a heterosexual to all women except to lesbians who'd know otherwise. Since it'd be temporary even if come to be a life-long friendship, my marriage if it is found, if this state deserves my seed, to be with a woman whose chosen me without ulterior influence same as I've chosen her, meeting by chance as I met my first love, an English-Australian woman and other lovers since. Luckily I found a better stance than LGBTQ flaming pride I still support, for them, regarding my own sexuality with sexual fluidity theory, when I dusted off the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' abandoned by the United States Military to be found by me at a Salvation Army like the many artefacts that adorned our family's first apartment and house in the United States. Ha-ha, look, its Diogenes de Sinope laughing his ass off at the many academics claiming him stupider because of their skewed perspective judging too harshly by the past to see that they want to see so they don't reflect upon their own sin, looking at irrelevant old documents, and through a scanner darkly. Snickering at the creatives claiming themselves original then proving otherwise for claiming my lack of originality where I don’t have to criticize them such, simply allowing them to put the label on their heads, while putting words in my mouth to safeguard their egos. Still, I do protect my ego excessively sometimes as well, but only because such systematic abuse makes it necessary, I’ll turn off the lantern when I’m confronted with honest men and women, and my disrespect was also because often the most honest men and women are those the rest would find armed and away from them to uphold their safety with the safety off. And laughing quietly with a small tear at how abuse has become so thorough and appropriation so in the hands of the abusers, at those who'd reveal themselves the oppressor for getting mad someone playfully take the mask of Ximen Bao, when he is more like a villager pointing out the elders and the village priestesses' abuse of women, Ximen Bao's mask though not belonging any one person, now that he is long gone but ancient Chinese history of a talented politician and hydraulics engineer to have tended to many overflowing rivers and removed institutionalized systematic abuse of women hidden by religion, perhaps more appropriately a certified software engineer or hacker, and uniformed policemen, policewomen, and uniformed military or their equivalent properly taking the place of Ximen Bao's guards and soldiers who drowned the village elders abusing women and the priestesses aiding them by selecting and coercing women for Habao the river God. Or those who'd become irate I'd take the mask of Diogenes de Sinope for doing the same when japing at other philosophers with more credential, where that mask belongs to those without academic title, even those with a criminal past like the real man's past as an exile for vandalizing, shaving off silver bits from Greek currency to accumulate and resell, but there is the mask of a particular Hebrew himself I'll never claim myself to be like, nor bigger than, not dare to take the mask of since that man born to woman of a man's seed showed a humble man could conquer an empire.
'And the UN, UNnazi-ed the world forever,' I could write an essay picking apart Idiocracy but it was not life changing, perhaps more the film inspired by events in Timothy Cavendish's life enjoyed by a clone broken free from her religious indoctrination before her confession and demise never knowing the connection to Timothy Cavendish, yet this slave freed from religious indoctrination, despite many attempts to kick my family further down the socioeconomic ladder back to where my parents began for their sons not accepting the commonly held ideals and their daughter being troublesome however smart they all are, did enjoy many more pleasures than poor Somni-451 did in that future cyberpunk North Korea. Forever grateful an emotional and intellectual connection, though it did not come to be physical as she'd once wished when inviting me to Spain, chanced into my life sharing my own favorite book as her bible once. Maybe I'll no longer dreamily think you Meronym, but you can still be Leonina Crowne, Mrs. Brown, Polina, and Donna, Audrey, or whatever other name she'd take under cover if you ever choose to care about what happens around you beyond sight, yet I do not blame you, a mother and woman with a career is no longer a wide-eyed blue eyed rebel I'd met and talked to till she'd sleep many a night turned morning. But no, John Does Not Die At The End, at least not by his own hand, I'd rather peeve someone off so hard they do it for me if what I speak is bothersome to someone who wouldn't more wisely incentivize me and befriend me to perhaps not do so and continue distracting myself as I did so contently before our connection was slashed.
And as I stared into the void of recent human history to see that which scared her away briefly to leave me feeling as if the globalist liberalism we'd shared had abandoned me to face religious extremism alone, the void stared back at me as my mouth watered before the roast upon the flames and delusions of a conquered Central America, much like Shadowrun’s post-Mexican state Aztlan, a result of a Mexican conquest of everything South down to a border shared uneasily with Amazonia at Bogota, Columbia. To turn of Central America that I was threatened with; poorly paid agricultural slave labor so Mexico may more freely pursue my own dream, an increasingly technocratic Nationalist Democratic state, which had previously been a softer more liberal and peaceful thought in the back of my mind as I struggled to embark on my own path to at least becoming stable and financially independent. And I took step by step the same path as The Wall’s protagonist, perhaps born of a psychotic break Roger Waters himself may have suffered, despite having watched him play it twice in Mexico City, the second time around with a bassist Second Gulf War veteran wheelchair-bound after the loss of his legs playing with him on-stage at the Zocalo.
Though I'd not accuse everyone, nor even everyone complicit knowing deception to be so possible in an informatic age where recently we learned deepfakes possible to super-impose the image of another over the original in a video, due to a scandal where celebrity women were edited into pornographic videos, showing us this is possible for any other motive, but that's why it's called the fucking mob kids, some places are clean, but where it penetrates it can come to ensnare and even become everyone unknowingly promoting and acting out the agenda of the few in charge of public perception and belief. Still, I'd always shunned away from power, fame, and riches, wouldn't reject them to do good, but never was interested, preferring to enjoy what I enjoy in-private, preferring to keep my ploys to influence more subtle and aimed at hopefully positive outcomes, until lately when I so erratically just plain stopped giving a fuck since after I'd chosen a brief dream among the many other dreams I held as an indecisive child for my future the schemes of power and corruption I'd hoped to avoid doing so still intruded upon my life, and I came to entertain the idea of my future to be a gray-haired Nationalist man someday vying for political power to cleanse a state of corruption, thinking how to come-up with my own catchy way to say 'La mafia del poder.' Wondering if jails still keep libraries somewhere, if you can still get your law degree to begin a potential political career while in prison, since some of my more brazen attempts at calling attention did have that as a preferable outcome over being tortured till I accept a false confession and Catholicism before being made to work a farm as a slave. Disappointed and feeling betrayed over having been treated such by another Leftism movement, supposedly a French Maoist among Mexican Maoists, myself a male Feminist, Democratic Socialist, and Market Socialist with some right-leaning Nationalism also keeping that Market Socialism aligned in some interests concerning not going too far with Libertarianism since doing so pushes everyone attempting some regulation towards wishing for violent revolution I still shun, ultimately being of the Center Left politically, and a man who would have enjoyed and loved to do agricultural work however grueling during his semester off even at low pay provided he wasn't forced into it and could leave come the end of the season. Even if it is a little more grueling compared to the last employment I applied for, which resulted in 12+ hour days including transit and combined with attending class for 6 months, so I could save up to buy an ex-girlfriend a huge and beautiful puzzle with some oriental inspiration like other art she enjoyed, myself a used laptop for classwork, and to buy tickets for us both to see Nine Inch Nails at a music festival I usually ignore because it's usually more pop and popular music compared to that year's set, a band both of us uphold as one of our favorites, since I'd love to learn agricultural work even as a skillset for a future hobby and I'd regretted not choosing horticulture as an elective at my university.
Who knows, maybe the cause behind the attack was really my insane Old Testament Catholic extremist of a younger brother turning me in to activists bordering on militants hoping they'd remove me from making him envious and having to hear an ass or two spanked and a woman's cry or two through our shared wall then thinking I don't deserve to do the same to a woman in a Spanish hotel room because I lack his philosophy degree or something. Man, we both really got to get out of our parent's house. I mention this because it seems to be a thing with him, a woman I dated but came to wish I'd treated more as a friend he'd made it a thing to descriptively tell me of how satisfying he'd left her when he'd fucked her as if I'd care and didn't know those screams and shudders myself, at a party with others present none-the-less, impressing upon me in a way it was clear he wanted me to feel envious as I laughed it off and said the equivalent of 'congrats, I guess?' Again he'd ask out a woman I'd more recently dated and was more seriously involved with after we broke up, to which she rejected and revealed to me how creepy it was when we got back together before ultimately breaking up again, once he tried to force himself into my room as she lay boldly naked atop my bed, insisting why don't we play some board games when clearly we were both set to fuck. I just don't know what the fuck is up with him but I've since forgiven him but never forgotten the lesson to not trust the younger brother who grabs the teapot to go and set it in the small courtyard of a backyard beneath the sole palm tree at night time ever again. Whatever, I guess he was sick of being Doctor Venture sleeping in the lower bunk bed beneath Brock's bunk as revealed in a flashback scene of their shared university years. Whatever, I guess he was sick of being Doctor Venture sleeping in the lower bunk bed beneath Brock's bunk. Go fuck off with your extremist friends, I'm not letting myself get that maddened over what turned out to be overblown again, but if I do I'm the fucking Monarch from Venture Bros replete with Monarch themed super villain costume to go tree hugging awaiting confrontation on some field set to be cleared, since clearly you can't trust people enough to fight for them even among Leftists, so I may as well go fight for trees that also serve as Monarch butterfly homes in the Winter. All that would be missing is a gravelly voiced woman or maybe a transgender woman to play Doctor Girlfriend, and a couple fellow weirdos to be Henchman 21 and the other guy to give the armed responders to our opposition to another field being cleared the strangest surprise. Maybe it was just that, and it took the collusion with a militant activist group to get me to feel inadequacy issues I'd gotten over in high school peacefully sharing halls with many women who'd rejected me over other dudes like any other weirdo, to get my brother to feel a little better about his ego despite writing such trash philosophy if what he's shown me is any indication of the rest, since apparently a guy can't enjoy things previously kept private without having it shown it was not so private after all. Still, I understand a woman's incapacity to comprehend and fear of me since I did say some weird shit fallen into psychosis, and forgive her however it made me feel abandoned in a time of duress, but perhaps it might be a chance to commit a Sophist act to teach a lesson to would-be faux-Sophists just wishing to see a man suffer for nothing more than their sadism."

2020.09.28 04:28 StevenStevens43 The Gaelic uprisings

The Gaelic uprisings
The real Arvirargus revealed:
To find out why "Marius" in the quote below, is almost definitely the same person as Sallustius Lucullus, you will need to first read my previous article to establish why this is.
Reading this article without first establishing the basic foundations, will deem this article useless.
So i will leave a link right here below, for the article you should first read, before coming back and reading this one.
Sallustius Lucullus
Link for article
Marius:
Now i will introduce Sallustius Lucullus/Marius.
The legendary Marius is the son of the legendary Arvirargus.
Marius
Marius was a legendary king of the Britons) during the time of the Roman occupation of Britain, as recounted in Geoffrey of Monmouth's pseudohistorical Historia Regum Britanniae. He was the son of King Arvirargus and ruled following his father's death.
Arvirargus:
And in turn, the legendary Arvirargus is the son of the legendary Kimbelinus.
According to Geoffrey, Arvirargus is a son of the former king Kimbelinus. Arvirargus
Kimbelinus:
However, it turns out that Kimbelinus is not legendary in the slightest.
Archaelogists have found his coins all over southern britain, marked "rex", which means he was a client king for the Romans.
Also he is written about in Roman records.
Quite simply, he is the same person as Cunobelinus, and Kimbelinus is simply a his name in a different dialect.
Cunobeline
Cunobeline (or Cunobelin, from Latin Cunobelinus, derived from Common Brittonic \Cunobelinos* "Strong as a Dog", "Strong Dog") was a king in pre-Roman Britain from about AD 9 until about AD 40.[1] He is mentioned in passing by the classical historians Suetonius and Dio Cassius, and many coins bearing his inscription have been found. He controlled a substantial portion of south-eastern Britain, including the territories of the Catuvellauni and the Trinovantes, and is called "King of the Britons" (Britannorum rex) by Suetonius.[2] He appears to have been recognized by Roman emperor Augustus as a client king, as testified by the use of the Latin title Rex on his coins. Cunobeline appears in British legend as Cynfelyn (Welsh), Kymbelinus (medieval Latin) or Cymbeline, as in the play by William Shakespeare.

Sallustius Lucullius:
Now not much more is known about Sellustius Lucallius beyond him having likely been a consul, aswell as a client king before being executed in 85 AD when the Roman empire began doing away with their client kings in favour of more direct ownership of British lands.
Also if you find it unbelievable that a Gaelic speaking Celt named Marius might have a Latinised name of "Sallustius Lucullus", then i will leave a photo of the Roman emperor Caligula.
Sallustius Lucullus
Anything more about Lucullus is conjecture or inference: for example, since every other known governor of Roman Britain had been a consul prior to being appointed governor, it is reasonable to assume Lucullus also had been consul; since all of the consuls from the year 85 until past the death of Domitian are known, he must have been consul before the year 85.

Amminus:
Now, if you have read my previous article, and you still have doubts about them being the same person, then know, that everything i have said, is pretty much now accepted as a contemporary theory amongst contemporary historians and scholars, as confirmed confirmed below.
But, from now on, i will use the name Marius to remain consistant with popular opinion.
Sallustius Lucullus
A second theory was proposed by Dr. Miles Russell of Bournemouth University. An inscription from Chichester, recorded by Samuel Woodford in his Inscriptionum Romano-Britannicarum Conllectio (1658) but since lost, refers to Sallustius Lucullus, giving his praenomen as Gaius and describing him as a propraetorian legate of the emperor Domitian. Another inscription from Chichester, discovered in 1923, refers to a "Lucullus, son of Amminus". Russell argues that this is the same Lucullus, and that his father was the native British prince Amminus, son of Cunobelinus, who fled to Rome c. 40.
Boudica:
Now Marius would have been at his prime just around the time of the Boudica revolt in 60 AD.
Boudica
Boudica or Boudicca (UK: /ˈbuːdɪkə, boʊˈdɪkə/, US: /buːˈdɪkə/), also known as Boadicea (/ˌboʊ(ə)dɪˈsiːə/, also US: /ˌboʊæd-/) or Boudicea, and in Welsh as Buddug (IPA: [ˈbɨðɨɡ]),[1][2] was a queen of the British Celtic Iceni tribe who led an uprising against the conquering forces of the Roman Empire in AD 60 or 61. She died shortly after its failure and was said to have poisoned herself. She is considered a British folk hero.[3]

Boudicea painting
Roman conquest:
Of course, the uprising was caused by the Roman empire trying to take ownership of the kingdoms and lands.
They were previously self governing provences that had good trade relations with Rome.
But when Boudiceas husband died, his will was ignored by the emperor, who done the same to Boudica as he was doing to other client kings and queens, and he took Boudicas kingdom from her.
According to Tacitus, he also turned her in to a slave, and she and her daughters also raped.
Boudica
Boudica's husband Prasutagus, with whom she had two children whose names are unknown, ruled as a nominally independent ally of Rome, and left his kingdom jointly to his daughters and to the Roman emperor in his will. However, when he died, his will was ignored, and the kingdom was annexed and his property taken. According to Tacitus, Boudica was flogged and her daughters raped.[4] Cassius Dio explains Boudica's response by saying that previous imperial donations to influential Britons were confiscated and the Roman financier and philosopher Seneca called in the loans he had forced on the reluctant Britons.[5]

Uprising:
Boudica and her Iceni tribe led an uprising which almost removed the Roman empire from Britain, by destroying Roman Britains most important settlements.
Boudica
In AD 60 or 61, when the Roman governor Gaius Suetonius Paulinus was campaigning on the island of Mona (modern Anglesey) on the northwest coast of Wales, Boudica led the Iceni, the Trinovantes, and others in revolt.[6] They destroyed Camulodunum (modern Colchester), earlier the capital of the Trinovantes but at that time a colonia), a settlement for discharged Roman soldiers and site of a temple to the former Emperor Claudius. Upon hearing of the revolt, Suetonius hurried to Londinium (modern London), the 20-year-old commercial settlement that was the rebels' next target. He lacked sufficient numbers to defend the settlement, and he evacuated and abandoned Londinium. Boudica led a very large army of Iceni, Trinovantes, and others against a detachment of Legio IX Hispana, defeating them, and burning Londinium and Verulamium.

Boo! And her daughters
Suicide:
The end result was defeat.
She is thought to have died of an illness.
Possibly self enduced poisoning, to avoid enslavement.
Boudica
The crisis caused Nero to consider withdrawing all Roman forces from Britain, but Suetonius's victory over Boudica confirmed Roman control of the province. Boudica then either killed herself to avoid capture (according to Tacitus),[8]
Gaelic:
Now, does it seem a bit unbelievable that one single warrior princess and her Iceni tribe could achieve all this?
Well what you have to remember, is the Gaelic language during this period, was spoken all over Gaul, and before the Roman conquests, Gaul was a very large area, taking in much of europe and beyond, as i revealed in my article "From Gaul to Galilee".
But Boudica was known throughout Gaul, in many different Gaulish/Gaelic dialects, suggesting she was well connected.
Name
The Gaulish version is attested in inscriptions as Boudiga in Bordeaux, Boudica in Lusitania, and Bodicca in Algeria.[13]

Pre-roman Gaul
Loyalty:
Now, Marius, who was likely executed in 85 AD by the Romans, was loyal to the Romans right until the death.
Marius
Marius established close ties with Rome and good diplomacy through tribute and respect of the Roman citizens in Britain. He followed the laws of his ancestors and ruled justly. When he died, he was succeeded by his son, Coilus.
Agricola:
And back to this Sallustius Lucullus/Marius for just a second.
Sallustius Lucullus is thought to have been part of Roman attempts of expansion in to Albany/Caledonia/Scotland, and he allied himself with Agricola during Agricolas conquest of Caledonia attempt, just before his execution.
Military activity
Archaeology can tell us something of Roman military activity in the years following Agricola's recall in 84. Sallustius (or his unknown predecessor, if one existed) may have attempted to consolidate Agricola's victories in Scotland by building the Glen Forts which Peter Salway dates to his rule. Forts at Ardoch and Dalswinton in southern Scotland, which Agricola had built, were extensively rebuilt in the late 80s and evidence of improvements of other military installations in the region points to a strong presence in the Scots Lowlands.

De facto king of Albany:
And the client kingdom that Marius ruled, would appear to have been the equivalent of todays Northumbria, and Scotland.
He was likely the de-facto king of Albany, though possibly not recognised by Picts, Scots and Gaels as such.
Marius
According to Geoffrey, he ruled wisely in the time when the Picts first arrived in Britain. A fleet of ships under the leadership of Sodric came from Scythia and landed in Albany. Once there, they began to destroy the lands and Marius was forced to react. Following numerous battles, Marius killed Sodric and set up a stone there to remember that triumph. In addition, that land became known as Westmorland after him.

Westmorland
Picts:
And as you may have read in the above quote, it is believed by Geoffrey that Marius was attacked by Picts that arrived in Albany from Scythia.
And as has already been established in previous articles, Scythia was an area in Eurasia that was led by the aristocratic Royal Scoloti.
It is also hardly surprising that there are Gaels fleeing to Albany, as Scythia is also coming under Roman attack, during this period.
Scythians
.[10][13] Based in what is modern-day Ukraine and southern Russia, the Scythians called themselves Scoloti and were led by a nomadic warrior aristocracy known as the Royal Scythians.

Scythia
Tuathal Techtmar:
Now, it just so happens, in Irish legends, around this "exact same period", an Irish high king named Tuathal Techtmar was brought up in Albany/Caledonia which was his Mothers original homeland before she moved to Ireland to marry the high king of Ireland, who got overthrown, causing her to return to Albany.
However Tuathal Techtmar ended up returning to Ireland at around the age of 20 years, and fought a war to reclaim the throne of Irish high king.
He would also have been an enemy of Marius one would assume, as Marius appears to be trying to appear as the Roman client king of Albany, and Tuathal Techtmar is also of indigenous Albion kingship.
Legend
Later versions of the story suppress the involvement of the provincial nobility in the revolt, making the "subject peoples" the peasants of Ireland. The Lebor Gabála Érenn[6] adds the detail of Túathal's exile. His mother, Eithne Imgel, daughter of the king of Alba (originally meaning Britain, later Scotland), was pregnant when Fíachu was overthrown, and fled to her homeland where she gave birth to Túathal. Twenty years later Túathal and his mother returned to Ireland, joined up with Fiacha Cassán and Findmall, and marched on Tara to take the kingship.
Dates:
According to Keating, the timing is absolutely perfect.
He was in Albany from 55 AD until 80 AD, and died in 100 AD.
Dates
Geoffrey Keating's Foras Feasa ar Érinn broadly agrees, dating his exile to 55, his return to 80 and his death to 100.
Caithness:
Now the end result of this war with Marius was defeat.
Though Marius was kind enough to allow them to have the area of Caithness, which the Picts refused in favour of going to Ireland.
Though some almost definitely remained.
Marius
In respect for the people he defeated, he gave them a small portion of Albany called Caithness to live in. Marius refused, however, to give them women to marry so the Picts fled to Ireland and took wives there.
Link for photo
Caithness
Kingdom of Cat:
And the word Caithness, does indeed come from the Picts, that lived in the Kingdom of Cat, after the name of their tribe.
Toponymy
The Caith element of Caithness comes from the name of a Pictish tribe known as the Cat or Catt people, or Catti (see Kingdom of Cat)
Link for photo
Flag of Caithness
Gaelic dialect:
And whilst all Gaelic languages are connected, there are many variations.
Toponymy
The Gaelic name for Caithness, Gallaibh, means "among the strangers" (the Norse). The Catti are represented in the Gaelic name for eastern Sutherland, Cataibh,[2] and the old Gaelic name for Shetland, Innse Chat.
Pictish language:
And whilst the Pictish language is Gaelic, and connected to the Brythonic language, it is still of different dialect to others.
They could probably still hold somekind of conversation with eachother however.
Picts
Early medieval sources report the existence of a distinct Pictish language, which today is believed to have been an Insular Celtic language, closely related to the Brittonic spoken by the Britons) who lived to the south.

Irish high king:
Now, obviously Tuathal Techtmar did not just walk in to Ireland and get the vote of the people.
He obviously had an army that followed him to Ireland and fought for his return, and he is attributed to have fought very hard for this.
Legend
Túathal fought 25 battles against Ulster, 25 against Leinster, 25 against Connacht and 35 against Munster. The whole country subdued, he convened a conference at Tara, where he established laws and annexed territory from each of the four provinces to create the central province of Míde (Meath)) around Tara as the High King's territory. He built four fortresses in Meath: Tlachtga, where the druids sacrificed on the eve of Samhain, on land taken from Munster; Uisneach, where the festival of Beltaine was celebrated, on land from Connacht; Tailtiu, where Lughnasadh was celebrated, on land from Ulster; and Tara, on land from Leinster.
Irish Gaelic:
Now, Ireland was most likely already a Gaelic speaking country.
But legends state that during the invasion of Tuathal Techtmar, the current day Irish gaelic language emerged.
In fact, the legends even express a belief that the invasion of Tuathal Techtmar was a complete foreign invasion from start to finish, by foreigners.
Therefore, i think scholar T.F.O'Rahily is mistaken when he says that Irish legends are rehashing earlier return exile stories.
Whilst there were earlier invasions, i think there is plenty evidence to suggest that the invasion being discussed here, is an entirely different invasion to one that may have happened in the 1st or 2nd century BC.
The invasionbeing spoken about, and the language spoken by the invaders, was probably the form of Gaelic spoken by the Scythian based Gaels which first invaded Albany, before moving on to Ireland..
They perhaps did not even speak the same dialect of Gaelic as other Picts in other regions that have evolved in an ever so slight different direction.
Goidels
The scholar T. F. O'Rahilly suggested that, as in many such "returned exile" stories, Túathal represented an entirely foreign invasion which established a dynasty in Ireland, whose dynastic propagandists fabricated an Irish origin for him to give him some spurious legitimacy. In fact, he proposed that Túathal's story, pushed back to the 1st or 2nd century BC, represented the invasion of the Goidels, who established themselves over the earlier populations and introduced the Q-Celtic language that would become Irish,
Puppet:
There is however a quite contemporary theory that Tuathal may have actually been a Roman puppet.
Romans in Ireland
Taking the native dating as broadly accurate, another theory has emerged. The Roman historian Tacitus mentions that Agricola, while governor of Roman Britain (AD 78–84), entertained an exiled Irish prince, thinking to use him as a pretext for a possible conquest of Ireland.[10]
Evidence of Roman occupation:
Archaeologists have in fact found evidence of Roman settlement in the areas most consistant with Tuathals war campaigns in Ireland.
Romans in Ireland
.[10] Neither Agricola nor his successors ever conquered Ireland, but in recent years archaeology has challenged the belief that the Romans never set foot on the island. Roman and Romano-British artefacts have been found primarily in Leinster, notably a fortified site on the promontory of Drumanagh, fifteen miles north of Dublin, and burials on the nearby island of Lambay, both close to where Túathal is supposed to have landed, and other sites associated with Túathal such as Tara and Clogher.
Military support:
Contemporary historians and scholars tend to actually believe that Tuathals campaign was supported by the Romans to have a friendly king that will put a stop to the Irish raids happening on mainland Britain, as well as of course for other future possibilities and obvious reasons.
Romans in Ireland
It is possible that the Romans may have given support to Túathal, or someone like him, to regain his throne in the interests of having a friendly neighbour who could restrain Irish raiding.[5][11] The 2nd-century Roman poet Juvenal, who may have served in Britain under Agricola, wrote that "arms had been taken beyond the shores of Ireland",[12] and the coincidence of dates is striking.
Hibernia:
And it is quite contemporary that Agricola did indeed give support and refuge to an exiled Irish king, in the hope he would be useful for a future conquest of Ireland.
Hibernia
[9] Agricola fortified the coast facing Ireland, and Tacitus recalls that his father-in-law often claimed the island could be conquered with a single legion and auxiliaries). He had given refuge to an exiled Irish king whom he hoped he might use as the excuse for conquest.
Link for photo
Agricola
Summary:
It sounds like the uprising was a lot bigger and more co-ordinated than simply one she-wolf.
It probably included Irish raiders, and even Picts from afar afield as Scythia.
It would all have been part of the war against the Roman empire.
As for the case with the Picts.
It sounds like Agricola gave them refuge from Marius most likely.
May have even used the inhumane way that Marius was treating them as justification for executing him, thus removing yet another client king, at the same time as gaining an allied army to invade and conquer Ireland.
Though, if this was the reason, then it was all fruitless, as no conquest of Ireland would ever be followed through by the Romans.

\I still have the HRCI BOK if anyone wants it...It has some marks around but is in good condition. If you are in Queens New York you can pick it up; otherwise, I am happy to ship it if you are willing to pay for the shipping fee.*

*****long post alert****\*
My background...
I have 7+ years of HR experience, mostly in talent acquisition and managing talent program (like selecting and growing hi-pos) in an international organization. I also have a master's degree in Sociology. This means that I have almost zero knowledge/ skill/ experience in most of the key HR areas like compensation and benefits, employment relations, etc. I had absolutely no idea about the labor law regulations and practices in U.S....even though I have been physically working here for the past years.
Just want to lay it out there, that even there was a huge knowledge gap in certain areas, with some preparation you can also make it through the test :)
Preparation and Study Material
It took me around 3 months to prepare. I have decided to take the SPHR at the beginning this year. The initial appointment was in May but ended up rescheduling to September. My serious study started in July. I have dedicated 1-1.5 hours every day during the week and 3-5 hours on weekends in these 3 months (gotta say staying at home during COVID actually helped!). So the total study time is approximately 120 hours. Your time and study plan might be significantly shorter. As I said, I had some serious knowledge gap even worked in HR for quite a long time...also I am a slower reader - English being my second language.
My study material includes HRCI BOK, Benchprep Study System, Pocket Prep for SPHR, official HRCI test questions.
HRCI BOK - read it from cover to cover, twice.
I still have the HRCI BOK if anyone wants it...It has some marks around but is in good condition. If you are in Queens New York you can pick it up; otherwise, I am happy to ship it if you are willing to pay for the shipping fee.
Benchprep Study System - studied every lesson, took every exercise and test. It is nice complimentary reading material in addition to HRCI BOK. I find it to be very well structured; they break the whole book into small pieces of information which is easy for people like me with a short attention span. My only comment is that the exercise questions are repeated in some chapters.
Pocket Prep for SPHR - cannot recommend this app enough! I found it from a Redditor experience sharing psot...and this app with 1000 questions has been so helpful. I spent the last 4 weeks mostly on this app. It is a very good refresher for the things that I read. I like the function of "creaing your own test' using only missed questions. Pity that they don't have a web version.
official HRCI test questions - purchased as part fo the bundle from HRCI website. It has only 50 questions and I used it 1 day prior to my official test.
The thing is that all the practice questions from Benchprep and Pocketprep are designed by someone OTHER THAN the SPHR committee. This means the focus of the questions and the way they expect you to answer are going to be slightly different from the real SPHR questions. I got around 70 - 80% correct in the Benchprep and Pocketprep, but only got 48% correct in the HRCI questions (which almost got me a heart attack since I took it so late). This is what I did a few hours prior to my test - I reviewed every question carefully and tried to understand the way HRCI testing committee raised their question and the "best answer" in their logic. This process of familiarization is really important for me to choose the "best answer in HRCI way" during the actual test.
If you can get more official HRCI test questions, get them - that gave you the real experience and is the best reflection on how you could score in a real test.
I didn't make my own flip card, I didn't take a whole lot of notes. All I did was reading, taking the test, correcting and go back to my reading, and practiced again.

COVID and Test Day Experience
Because of COVID, my initial test appointment was canceled since the test center was closed. I had to reschedule for a later date (best news for procrastinators). I was happily surprised to find out it is also possible to take the test at home. I called Pearson VUE and rescheduled it to be an at-home test (you had to cancel and rebook, which was a hassle but anyway I did it).
I was able to download the app called ONVUE from the Pearson website to do the system testing a few weeks prior.
A few days prior to the testing day, I have also received an email reminder sharing the things to note on the testing day. Below are the things that they forgot to mention, but I think are very important to know:
  1. the real testing is longer than 210 mins. They recommend you to check in 30 mins prior, and you will only start the test once your proctor checked your ID and your testing environment. I spent 4 hours and 15 mins for the whole process (check in + proctor verification + test).
  2. You are not allowed to be out of the sight of the webcam. Once you checked in, you need to stay within the range of your webcam. This means no bathroom break for over 4 hours! So be prepared and DO NOT drink a ton of water as I did...the last 30 mins was pure torture.
  3. You will need your phone during the check-in. I used my phone to do the check-in, which includes a real-time photo of yourself, a photo of your photo ID, 4 pictures of your testing environment. These were submitted to the proctor and s/he will verify and ask questions (they can initiate a chat pop-up on your screen). I initially put my phone on flight mode to avoid distraction...don't do it and keep it within reach as the proctor can contact you via phone during check-in. Put it away as the last action before testing, as guided by proctor.
  4. When they say "declutter", they mean it. I didn't know a 2nd monitor is not allowed, so were paper (blank) and pen. I was asked to remove all these and leave only a laptop on the table. Prepare in advance, especially if you are like me who are used to a bigger screen/ additional mouse/ keyboard after months of working from home. There were a whiteboard function and a build-in calculator in the system, so it worked fine with me without paper and pen.
Last tips...
I knew there were questions that were out of my knowledge range even after studying...however I did my best to answer (and sometimes guessing) every single one of them. What other recommended about using the flagging function (I marked almost 60 questions) definitely works. Also, another tip was to think as a CEO instead of HR in strategic questions.
The fill-in-the-blank question did not show up in my test. I would not recommend spending too much time in memorizing those hard acronyms.
Another thing I was worried about was the details of law/ regulations/ executive orders. What I meant was the questions like, which year was XXX established, what's the regulation that covered XXX clause etc. They also did not show up in my test. I am not saying this is not important, but I found the real SPHR test tends to be more scenario-based and requires more judgment call (rather than testing your memorizing skills).
Good Luck!
I received my test outcome within a few minutes via email upon completion, and I was just so happy that the hard work paid off. I hope you are also receiving that congrats email soon!
Best luck dears!
